Maxscan405 advice sought.

Featured Replies

Can anyone kindly interpret the following extract from the instructions for the MaxScan 405 into English please.

"Erasing Codes

CAUTION: Erasing the Diagnostic Trouble Codes may allow the scan tool to delete not only the codes from the vehicle’s on-board computer, but also “Freeze Frame” data and manufacturer specific enhanced data. Further, the I/M Readiness Monitor Status for all vehicle monitors is reset to Fail status. Do not erase the codes before the system has been checked completely by a technician"

I have just bought this tool for my 2001 Felicia, but have no idea what, when, why or how to use it. I plugged it into my car this afternoon just to try it out and it all worked as the manual says it should, but the above paragraph is a little verbose! I didn't do a lot with it as I would like to find someone who knows what they are doing to show me some of the functions.

Thanks for any advice.

Put simply it means that all the fault code data will be reset.

Readiness Monitor Status will go to false, it only becomes true again after a few days of driving without a fault being detected.

Not a problem in the UK but in some parts of the USA OBDII Readiness Monitor Status has to be true to pass their 'MOT' test.

Clearing the faults will also reset some of the "learned" values. Things like fuel trims etc. are effected by clearing codes.

As to your comment about the US OBDII Readiness monitors, more and more states require the monitors to be set in order to pass the emissions inspections required. VCDS has tools built to set the readiness without driving the car. It can usually be accomplished in about 15 minutes.
