Grinding from N/S Front when turning the steering

Featured Replies

Tried to search for anything that may help me on this but can't seem to find anything that sounds the same as what is going on!! :'(

A couple of weeks ago I thought I heard a knocking noise when I went over a speed bump while leaving work (no noise after that occurrence)

Tonight while driving home I noticed a faint grinding noise coming from the N/S front wheel when turning corners.

Got home and thought i'd check the steering and with the car stationary and in neutral i turned the steering full lock in both directions.

Just before reaching full lock on a left turn I heard a grinding noise coming from what seems to be the N/S front wheel started turning to reverse the lock (heading towards R/H full lock) the grinding continued on the N/S area until I reached just past straight on the steering.

Have been having intermittent steering light sensor illuminated for couple of years now (none for the last 6 or seven months)

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so was it the rack or pump that had gone??

If you could let me know and also a rough cost of getting the problem fixed (don't fancy driving and the steering packing up on me)

Cheers :S

Had the car in the garage today for an oil change and got told that the noise is due to the N/S Front coil spring being broken - quote for repair is about £165 :'(

I would be relieved. Rack or PAS pump would have set you back close to four figures. Price is a bit steep though, unless they are doing both sides.
