Battery relocation part deux!

Featured Replies

Well - It's been moved again! From off the actual boot floor, and into the spare wheel well. I wanted my complete boot back again. B)

Always nice to see sparks when a car is being worked on :giggle: LOL at the BMW registration. ;)

And despite the car not being washed, I did think the paint was looking fairly good for once (Just clayed and waxed last weekend(

Some other mods + R&R were done as well so in around 5 hours, quite a lot was done - CV boot replaced, coolant drained, dodgy pipe replaced, and refilled, oil change done + flush, 256mm rear brakes offered up and checked would fit, battery moved, rear bumper adjusted, and a tasteful mod on the front added too (pics to follow this evening ;))

Why the heck do you want to put the battery in the boot for ?

Hope you have put sufficient size cable to run that length of cable from front to back

Yeah, the battery has been in the boot for about 3 years or so now due to airbox mods / water meth install taking up room in the engine bay. So have always had top-grade marine power cable running from the engine bay back to the boot. It just needed an extra 2 foot or less tagging on to reach into the spare wheel well.

Weight distribution too ;) Thats about 15kg+ of lumpy weight moved from in front of the front axle, to behind the rear axle.

Just be very careful, I have never been a lover of having a battery in the boot, once had a car go up in flames (luckily it was a company car) and they found the cable had rubbed through the insulation and and shorted to earth, and if the battery boils you will get the gas in the car.

I hear you on both counts  Insulation has nothing to really rub on, plus its a good10mm I reckon through to the core. As for gas, there's worse smells to worry about :D ahem ** I am referring to Millers diesel additive which I have a tendancy to spill on to carpets...

imo this should be more of a common mod.. its not difficult so long as all the safety is in check.

Whats this tasteful front mod etc then.. *waiting in anticipation* :p

Yeah, it's not tasteful at all, but like a lot of things when something dirt cheap makes itself known to me, I will snap it up. Will get a shot tonight as it needs to be dark. PS: That is quite a clue! :D

So what do you do when you have a puncture, phone and inconvenience a friend??

DB.

Most people without a spare wheel just carry some tyre foam stuff in the tin, and make sure they have rac cover

I do have breakdown and will be carrying some foam (as soon as I buy some....)

For any longer journies I will put the wheel, jack etc in the boot as a precautionary measure. For anything less than 20 or 30 miles from home, I won't bother.

I've not had a puncture since about 2002, so am confident it is a risk worth taking. :)

When will you have your next puncture?

When will you have your next puncture?

2nd November 2025!

Jason, how is the battery fitted to the boot? Is it just a bar bent over it, and screwed into the boot floor?

Regards.

Three point cage welded together from steel strips of metal (about 3mm thick so going nowhere ;)), and then each of the three feet are bolted through the floor using 2 bolts.

It kinda looks like you got a tray underneath i?

This is exactley what I'm looking for, just got to find a fab guy who can do it!

not sure it has a tray..

That is just the spare wheel well floor, although the spot welded fitting in the middle that usually secures the spare wheel had to be drilled out. Bit more weight saving.

Also, just realised the battery is now about 20-25cm closer to the floor, so not sure if this has a marginal effect on handling via centre of gravity?

It can only help! ;)
