Operation 256mm rear brakes!

Featured Replies

Funny how my car came with 256 front brakes and now several years later I am looking at getting some on the back.....

Started yesterday with me opening the box of rear brakes I nabbed off Clive (Westallc) and being very pleased at them actually fitting my car and discs turning smoothly, etc.

Then it began with a big clean-up. Wire brushing first and a pointy screwdriver type of tool to flake off bad paint. The plan was always to paint them red, so condition was irrelevant to me as long as they were mechanically sound, which they are indeed. B)

Now, back at home, I have rubbed them down with coarse sandpaper and given them a good wash. After taping off all the rubber they are currently hanging in the back garden from a DIY paint rail (garden fork between water-butt and BBQ, hanging on string.... :dull: ) with a coat of metal primer on them. Going to let that dry off for a little while and then begin with a coat of bright red "metal-protekt" paint from B&Q. Hopefully a couple of coats of that and the calipers & carriers will look spot on match with my brembos.

Pics later as I left my phone indoors during initial prep-work.

wow been a delay getting these done jason been busy??? lol

Kind of. Just not been down to the garage for a few weeks, so yesterday was ideal time to trial them. :)

Well, here's a couple of work in progress.... :D Now remember I don't really want to paint the entire calipers, just really what can be seen from the outside. Therefore my retort to anyone who says, "Missed a bit" is "BITE ME!" :D

Grey primer first of all - All in the prep! ;)

Then in red :D

And a quick close-up of one caliper. Not after a 100% finish as brakes being brakes will soon look cack. Just want them to match the brembos.

The previous 256mm kit was from an S3 and due to being a 4wd setup, would not fit my car, despite even using the supposed "spacer kit" for 4wd on 2wd from UK MkIVs......

I have kept the tasty discs and pads from the S3 kit though,
