Yeti's gone to the Mountains

Featured Replies

Holiday time has come again and we've just arrived in the Austrian Tirol after a great drive from home via ferry from Hull to Rotterdam and then motorways via Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.

Yeti ran extremely well cruising at between 60 and 80 mph and averaging 47 mpg, and with a ski box on the roof as well.

I haven't seen another Yeti so I think European Yetis must only come out at night.

Sounds like you're going to have a GREAT holiday John.

I hope your SM gets lots of admirers :D

Have a great holiday John,

drove down there in April 09 for a 5 day break staying in Seefeld, had my previous Golf TDI 4motion at that time; think we got a similar fuel reading but without a roof box. Very lucky hit the hottest and sunniest April week in a number of years, which was great for non skying tourists at the end of the skying season

Went over to Salzburg for the day, brilliant place for a day visit with plenty going on while we were there.

Regards,

TP

edit oh if you do go over to Salzburg watch out that you don't get flattened by these more bizarre forms of transport :giggle:

I'm not the greatest of photographers, but this could be the highest Yeti in Europe at about 2,500 metres at Kaiser Franz Josef Hohe at the top of the Grossglockner Road.

Is this the drink of Yeti drivers? Found in a French Hypermarket. Yeti strong beer, 8% and brewed in the mountains of the Savoy Alps.

My son plans to taste it when it's well chilled!

Hi all

another report from Austria on a very rainy day.

We've now seen 5 Yetis in all. 1 white, 1 steel gray, 1 light gray, 1 metallic brown, 1 metallic red.

I still like my steel grey version although the white looked very good. Had we bought new, we would have chosen white.

My wife also fancied a metallic red version had it been available in the UK but having seen one in the flesh (fur?) was not so keen as on the Superb we nearly went for.

John

ps Seems that Yetis wave to each other over here!

Well we're back after a great time holiday (despite the rain!!).

Here's some statistics:

Total mileage: 2302 miles

Average mpg: 46.7

Best tank full: 585 miles

Total driving time: 57.5 hours

Average speed: 40 mph.

I think the mpg figure would have been better without the box but having said that, the Yeti had no problem with overtaking at an indicated 100 mph with much more to come.

The Yeti never missed a beat and has returned blemish free without a single stone chip. The verdict from wife, son and me is that this was a fantastic car to tour in. Totally comfortable and no aches or pains even after longish days traveling to and from the Alps.

Even now I'm looking forward to January and the ski trip.

That was a very underhanded lead-in to Yet(i) another winter tyre and snowc***n discussion, John. :'(

So whatta yer gonne get for boots? :o

Welcome back - and impressive mileage with the box on top.

This compares well with my super frugal A2. This means my fuel bills will stay roughly the same - I will just go MUCH further between tanks as the A2 has only got a 34 litre tank.

My average over a few trips are:

One passenger, nothing on roof, Scotland and back - 49.4 MPG

Three passengers, roof box on roof, Lake District and back - 45,8 MPG

Two passengers, one bike on roof, Cornwall and back - 45,3 MPG (and the caption to this pic states I got 49 MPG going down to Cornwall though)

Two passengers, two bikes on roof, Wales and back - 43.5 MPG

Two passengers, one bike and one Kayak, Kent and back - 39,8 MPG

Three passengers, one bike, France and back - 39,5 MPG

In all cases the cruise control was set to 75 or 80 mph and the car was loaded to the brim.

My records in the A2 have been 63 MPG when doing a constant 70mph and 73 MPG doing a constant 60mph (over two 50 mile trips from Gatwick to East London - both in same direction). But that was really trying hard.

Well...

I have a set of 7 x 16 steel wheels fitted with 215/55-16 Avon Ice Touring ST which I used on my Passat earlier this year. They do seem fit the Yeti.

Unfortunately these seem to fall between the two sizes in Skoda's handbook - 205/55-16 or 215/60-16. Interestingly, using the tyre calculator I believe the 215/55-16s are closer in circumference to the 225/50-17 summer tyres than either of the other 2.

I haven't totally deceided whether to replace the 215/55s with 216/60s.

I also have a set of Weissenfels Klack and Go Quattros.

If the lateral offsets work, why not??

I am not due to do anything as yet, as the winters are just fine and the summers will be OK till at least nexr fall, but I would really be considering 16" 215/65 series for the next set of winters. Chains not being considered at all.

Thanks. I believe the wheel rims from the Passat are the same as for the Yeti, so no problem there.

Why 16-215/65 for your next winters?

John
