Waterfall

Featured Replies

Still need to sort out my week's ballooning holiday in Italy from a couple of weeks ago... But whilst we were out there, we did make it to Marmore which has one of the biggest man-made waterfalls in Europe. Info here.

This was at the top - probably the best for photos, but the ledge half way down had the best shower experience I've ever had and was completely addicted. Got some photos too despite getting completely soaked :D

Anyway, what other waterfall stuff have you snapped up?

That image is a beauty Xav.

I only have one that barely qualifies for this thread. I might have been better of taking a picture of my bath tap dripping

My little trickle :giggle: From the Prince Charles garden at Kew Gardens.

Shouldn't moan really - 1/8 handheld, lucky to get an image at all. Despite how it looks - IIRC it was only about ten feet high.

Thanks Chris. If the rocks looked smaller, the waterfall would look massive :D

Rob, I thought you'd post something, always heard of beautiful waterfalls in NZ and looks like it's true

Great pictures.

Few more from NZ

I forget the name of this one - it's North of Napier somewhere!

It rained in the night, so the following morning there were many waterfalls. Milford Sound measures its annual rainfall in metres.

OK, you've trumped me on the photo count, Rob

I still don't have a rainbow though.

You should come and tour NZ, you'd definitely do it more justice than my photos do :)

It really is an awesome place. The South Island is particularly stunning.

The Sutherland Falls in Milford Sound that Rob has pictured so well here are 580 Metres tall, which is considerably higher than the Empire State Building!

Fiordland National Park in the South-West corner of the South Island is the most awe inspiring place. The scale of the place is unimaginable until you've actually been there. We've tramped a lot in this area and it is truly worth the effort and expense of coming here.

For goodness sake, I sound like I'm employed by the New Zealand Tourism Authority :giggle: .

I find you tend to get that way when you've explored this place a bit.

Milford Sound is amazing. Even when you're there the scale is a bit hard to grasp. The mountains are about a mile high and go nearly as far underwater.

I'm at it now...

Also there's so much rain runoff that the top 1-2 metres of the sound is freshwater sitting on the top of the seawater.

I bet that confuses the whales and dolphins and seals and penguins and fishies!

For comparison - any from Doubtful Sound?

I've got some photos of Doubtful Sound and some videos, but honestly the weather on the days I spent down in Doubtful was so bad that they don't do justice to the place.

Go to Doubtful Sound on a wet day (or the day following a wet day) and you won't believe your eyes, I've been several times to both Doubtful and Milford. It's substantially larger than Milford, albeit without the real jaw-dropping beauty of Mitre Peak and Sutherland Falls. If I had time to visit only one of the Sounds, I'd personally choose Doubtful Sound. Real Journeys has a great day trip out across Lake Manapouri, then on to Doubful Sound and back via a huge hydro electric power station built inside a mountain. Highly recommended. Another great option is an overnight cruise on Milford, which avoids the coaches and crowds that tend to congregate there especially from Nov-Feb.

We went on the overnight cruise with Real Journeys. Highly recommended.

We'll definitely do Doubtful Sound with them when we can.

We've gone all off topic - the NZ tourist board has taken over the thread :)

Not really I asked if anyone has pics of Doubtful sound.

We did the tour of Doubtful in 2000 - epic and it had rained and was very very wet but wonderful

A bit like the images of a lost world by Ryder Haggard and whatever film that was made of that.

Another thing the NZ tourist board might reccomend is the special cinema in Teanu with the unique film over the Fiord country - not many waterfalls but fantastic scenery!

Now as to original query any more w/falls in NZ (north or south)? See back on track.

I've got some from the lake district the othe week taken on a slow shutter - i will upload when i get onto my PC. Great pics Rob - makes me want to move to NZ even more now!

If this thread is about waterfall pics, can I add this one.
