Ordered my Octavia vRS on Sunday

Featured Replies

Having it REVO chipped, custom mapped and tuned to the car.

Hopefully get it on Thursday. I ordered it in Candy White. We don't seem to get much of an options list over here in NZ, it pretty much comes fully loaded except for the MDI and Sat Nav it appears.

See spec sheet here:

http://www.skoda.co.nz/i/files/octavia_vrs_specs.pdf

Am thinking black wheels are a good starting point, but will get it tinted, and maybe lowered on some H&R springs.

Can't wait!!!

I read that spec list with interest, as it appears you get both Electric Folding door mirrors with entry area illumination. Something I didn't think was available on any vRS.

I may have to try and source me some of those!

If there is a way for me to look up the part number easily on it, I am happy to do so?

Where would I find it?

Do they appear well specced vs UK trim?

My one will have the Electric Folding Mirrors I am sure.

I am not certain about the Area Illumination though.

Car is Irish Spec

Ah, another Kiwi Briskodian, welcome! Actually, I'm a Brit who moved here with my Kiwi wife and children 12 years ago, and I think Rob Clubley (a fellow VRS owner) may also be a Brit who emigrated out here a while back, but that makes at least 3 of us on this forum now.

Very interesting to compare your NZ-based VRS spec with my NZ-based Scout, on order from the VW/Skoda dealer in Christchurch since early June and due for delivery in September. It seems the NZ cars come with quite a few options as standard that would be chargeable in the UK. Like your VRS, my car is well specified as standard, with the main extras you seem to get for free over my Scout being Xenons ($2K), front parking aid to complement the standard rears ($700) and LED driving lights ($200). Oh and leather on the Scout is an expensive $3,300 option that I also went for, along with heated seats ($450), false boot floor ($350), sunroof ($2,000) and electric seats ($1850). I was pretty happy with the 11% discount I managed to negotiate on the total package. Pretty much the only stuff I didn't go for was the SatNav, MDI, hill-hold, sunset glass and the extortionate silver roof rails @ $340 for a coat of paint!

Enjoy your new toy!

So apparently electrically folding mirrors are available in some RHD markets? This should make retrofitting a doddle surely?

I don't see why this should be so as all the postings indicate otherwise.

Folding power mirrors are fitted in the factory and are part of the core of the CAN bus electrical system,

and are not engineered to be retro-fitted.

Perhaps this is intentional !!!

This is not an area where the manufacturer wants spark and flash armatures messing.

They do appear very well specced vs the UK trim, as do the Irish ones, but bear in mind, they are a lot cheaper in the UK, so I guess savings have to be made somewhere.

If you get the part number, I'd be interested, however I suspect it's a very difficult fitting, as I'd guess there is switches to be fitted as well as the wiring.

Funnily enough I am a displaced POM as well :) Been here for 9 years now...

I posted on VASK that I was getting this, and Rob replied to that thread. Interesting difference in spec. The wait must be driving you nuts? I hate waiting the 5-6 days...

We do seem to pay quite a premium in NZ for them though.

Have you tried this?

5. Retractable external mirrors automatically retract when holding

down the “lock†button on the remote control.

is your one an MY11 model?

Eh? Have you got any more information on this? Powered fold mirrors should talk to the central convenience module, in the way a lot of other stuff does. You'll need the motors and wiring for these clearly, but I don't think I'd put a retro-fit down as 'impossible'.

My Christchurch dealer mentioned that all the Skodas he has sold have gone to either Brits or Europeans; the locals just haven't cottoned on to how good they are yet ;) .

You mentioned having your car REVO chipped, custom mapped and tuned to the car. May I ask who you are using and what it is costing? I'm definitely interested in giving my 2.0 TDi CR a "tweak", but want to do it properly.

You certainly can :)

It is being done by Giltrap Skoda in Auckland, that way no warranty issues or anything else...

The amount of ticks in that option box Skoda would see in the UK

Wasn't so much an option box, more the delaer going do you want to test drive our chipped demo... once I did that - there was no chance of me getting the stock one!!

Totally agree.

Nothing is impossible in this connection given you have enough time and money to throw at it.

But the point I'm trying to get across is that Skoda have deliberately engineered out the ready

ability to retro-fit power folding mirrors

Very interesting. I believe Giltrap Skoda in Auckland is the main Skoda dealer for the whole of NZ, with all Skoda orders from other NZ dealers being routed through Giltrap. I wonder if the Christchurch VW/Skoda agent Miles Continental would be allowed to install the REVO kit? Also, I just looked on the REVO website and there is no mention of the 2.0 TDi CR engine against the Octavia II (only the 2.0 TDi PD) so I wonder if a kit even exists for the CR engine?

Totally agree.

ability to retro-fit power folding mirrors

Why have they deliberatley done that?

I have retro'd folding mirros to my Audi A6, Of course you need new mirrors (obviously!) I swopped the door control units and added the switch into the drivers door. No additional wires were needed nor wholesale changes to the CAN-BUS system, just a few minutes with VCDS. I have no reason to think the Octavia would be radically different.

I havent missed the folding mirrors yet on my VRS but if I do then I think a retro-fit would be fairly straightforward.

Have you tried this?

That looks definitive to me. Irish ones (at least now) have folding mirrors as standard. Why on earth can't you even get them as an option in the UK?

Totally agree.

Why do you think that? It seems to me they've made a pretty stupid marketing decision not to offer folding mirrors in the UK when they are fitted in RHD markets, but to actually change elements of the car to prevent then being fitted makes no economic sense whatsoever!

I still think it would be simple because clearly you can buy all the correct Skoda parts to make it happen, which is obviously a lot easier than starting with a car model that has never been fitted with folding mirrors. May well cost a bit but some people will think its worth it.

Looking at the handbook the switch is integrated with the mirror adjustment so even that would be a direct replacement.

Its not all displaced Poms that get Skoda's in NZ - I'm a born and bred kiwi with a 08 VRS Black petrol down in Tauranga...

Rocky I take it your new one is a diesel? Any idea on the before/after specs of the remap?

Cheers

Heck no!! 2.0 turbo. They are 147KW pre chip, and post chip they reckon 197 - 210KW depending on the tune.

Holey moley :o . Talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing! That should compete nicely with the gazillions of WRXs on the streets here.

I've put an enquiry in to my Christchurch Skoda dealer for my diesel Scout (2.0 TDi CR) to be remapped. When I hear back, I'll let you know if/what is possible and the cost.

Hehehe, to be honest I am not that fussed about the numbers, the chipped one i drove was realy nice. It should be a bit of a millenium falcon really. Won't look quick, but should leave a few of the jap cars standing at the lights!!

My dad had a Renault 21 Turbo, that he'd had chipped and blueprinted back in the day. That was awesome to see sports cars being left behind!!
