Columbus Hard Disk upgrade

Featured Replies

My original drive seemed to be failing so I stuck a 40GB in for now, yielding 25GB for music. Need to resize the partitions now.

Now I've proven the problem was the hard drive, I'll probably upgrade to a 32GB / 64GB SSD or compact flash in an IDE adapter for some extra speed /quietness.

Nice have a fully working system board AND hard disk again. It's been a while!

Very nice do you know if there is a limitation to the size of disk you can put in?

No idea what the upper disk size limit is. I guess depending on the IDE controller it might have a 127GB limit. Just don't know tbh.

Is it IDE rather than SATA?

If so that's going to make getting spares harder in a year or so.

Yeah it's IDE. There are so many unused 2.5" IDE disks kicking around at workplaces, home, your mates, etc for free though.

Indeed there are a few kicking around right now, but as they all get older, there are going to be less and less.

Is yours an older unit or a newer one?

I'm only asking out of curiosity.

My Columbus is a mid 2008 1Z0 HW04. The hard disk I stuck in is some 40GB Fujitsu out of a knackered Dell laptop.

Will that not have problems with shock protection.

Just thinking about bumpy roads etc

Not bothered really, if it dies it dies. Will just view it as a sign it's time to get my arse in gear and replace it with the SSD. :)

 Fair Point

SSD is Expensive though. You could get a new Version C LED Screen RNS510 for that. :giggle:

Can you get an IDE SSD?? All the ones I have seen are SATA.

Is there enough room inside for an IDE - SATA converter board??

Yes, although very thin on the ground

  • 3 weeks later...

What's the speed like when navigating through huge collections?

Also, what's the Version C LED Screen RNS510 that somebody mentioned. If I buy a new Superb will I get that as an option?
