My Octy has stopped "Chirping"

Featured Replies

A little while back I had the "chirp" enabled on my vRS so that I could get confirmation all doors were locked, boot locked, alarm armed etc.

This has been working absolutely fine for ages.

Over the past week my "chirp" has gone.

No matter how many times I unlock and lock from the remote I don't get that confirmation noise.

After I've locked the car I've been around it - all doors are indeed locked as is the boot.

Anyone know what the lack of chirp is probably indicating?

Alarm system fault possibly?

Have you checked the fuel filler cap is shut properly ?

Oh good call - I'll go check that when I next go out in the car (Hours time) :)

Microswitch on a door. Check the red light is flashing correctly on the drivers door when you have locked the car.

Different key?

The setting for ATA Tones is set on a per key basis. My key does it - my partner's doesn't.

That's interesting. The chirp we're on about is set via VCDS and applies to the car as a whole, not individual keys.

So I'm now wondering where you've got your setting from!

If it's stopped completely there may be a problem with the alarm beeper. Try setting off the alarm to confirm that still works.

As a matter of interest under EU Regulations the security system should not emit an audible sound on being enabled/disabled. The only permitted indication of setting/unsetting the alarm is optical (ie indicators flashing) and even then they may not flash for more than 3 seconds. I belive this has now been the case since January 1997 when EU Directive 95/56/EC was published.

OK, back home after my visit to the hospital.

When I lock the door the red LED on the drivers door does:

Flashing - Approx. 2-3 seconds

On for about 12 seconds

Then off

All my doors, boot and filler cap are definitely locked.

Was always chirpping.

On the odd occasion than it didn't churp I simply unlocked and locked again.

It doesn't chirp when I unlock or lock - tis dead silent, except the noise of the locks shooting.

I've just had a Cat 1 alarm fitted to my motorbike and it emits a chirp or two chirps when arming or disarming.

I have this feature enabled and initially it did not work, so checked the alarm and the siren was U/S a common fault apparently?? got one from EBay and it has never missed a chirp. The position of the sounder is such that it shouldn't suffer corrosion but the old one i took off was a little corroded around the electrical connections, copious amounts of lithium grease used on the new one to stop this. I paid £25 incpostage for an 08 alarm siren

Hi, when I lock my pre-FL car, the red LED flashes rapidly for about 2 secs (7 or 8 flashes) and then starts to flash slowly, according to my handbook (page 37) this is a sign of correct operation of the deadlocking system. I'd say that your car is being locked OK but the deadlocking system is not functioning right. As an idea for something to try, why not sit in the car and set the locking system with the remote and then try to open the door using the handle, the lock should not operate, if it does then that is definately your problem. I would say that the light flashing sequence is a code for the fault.

Ian.

Have you got Maxidot - worth checking that just in case someone may have changed the setting by accident?

My chirp on my L+K is enabled through maxidot.

Funny you should say that......

I've just posted about this on the Fabia section of the fourm.

This all came to my attention when I got a new Triumph bike with a DATATOOL alarm fitted last June 2009. This chirped when counting down the alarm arming when the key was removed from the ignition. I got a verbal ticking off from a police motorcyclist on Hastings seafront last year when I parked up next to him. He said it was illegal but just warned me. I checked with DATATOOL and they confirmed that plod was 100% correct. It even says so in their manual - question is why was it supplied to me that way? But thats another question.

It seems that this was initially enshrined in The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2000. This enables the EEC Directive 95/96/EC.

Don't think you will be going to prison but technically it does contravene Construction & Use Regulations.

Sorry, I just skimmed the thread, so may have missed something.

your car has stopped chirping??

Could perhaps the budgie have died??

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Well, it could be worse, just try taking a dead parrot back to the pet shop!!!

You see this is another different thing - even though the chirp is now enabled on my Elegance, the option isn't present in Maxidot to set/unset the chirp. If I wanted to turn it back off (which I know I won't) I'd have to do this in VCDS again. This isn't consistent behaviour with other selectable options though, as now I've enabled coming home/leaving lights via VCDS, these options have now appeared in Maxidot, where as when I bought the car they weren't :S

Must be to do with versions of the convenience module or something. My former MY06 vRS didn't present the chirp option on Maxidot after it was set either...

Might be there has been a software/firmware update on the maxidot that you havent received.

Always possible I suppose, although I'm not aware of updates being applied\available for individual control modules. Plus my last Octy went through main dealer servicing, so you'd have hoped any applicable updates would have been applied at this stage.

There was a discussion in the Yeti forum about the Maxidot being updated while at the dealers a while back; although I think it was primarily something to do with the bi-xenon headlight settings.

If there is a way to see the current firmware/software revision number ?? it might be worth jotting it down, then going into a dealership and checking the number on one of the display models.

I've enabled quite a few alarm chirps on Skodas and Seats now, and every one seems to have the same characteristics.

Mike

Mine seems to chirp happily away every time Mike!

As for it not chirping any more, I'm not knowledgeable enough to help, sorry...

I shall give this a go at lunchtime and see if indeed it is the deadlocks.

However I thought (possibly wrongly) that if you were sat inside a car and somebody locked the doors via key-fob, you just simply needed to do a "double" on the door handle?

Similar to when the car auto-locks at 10mph?

Nope, if you lock it 'properly' i.e. with the deadlocks in place and you happen to be inside the car, the interior door handles won't be much good to you!

Thanks for all the posts.

I got in the car yesterday and locked it with the fob.

Indeed I was not getting out of the drivers door at all - no matter how many times I pulled on the handle :)

Is it worth me trying the deadlocks on each of the 4 doors as the fault could be in any one?

Or if one is working they will all work?

Ta

Of course, certainly won't to any harm to eliminate it as a cause.
