ESP - Where is it

Featured Replies

I have just ordered my Yeti, wanted automatic but not 4 wheel drive. Which? says the ESP does not come as standard so add it as an optional extra. Tried to do that in Spain but couldn't. Ordered anyway. Do any of you with two wheel drives and no ESP notice it? I think that as long as you are aware of this then shouldn't be a problem. Am I mistaken, have we become too addicted to the safety features? Any comments welcome.

We've got a 1.2 without ESP and we haven't fallen off the road or crashed yet!

In everyday driving I doubt you'll miss it, but in an extreme avoidance type swerve on the motorway it could help. It's not a 'save all' safety net and the Yeti scores well in the NCAP tests if the worst was to happen.

Yes, it's nice to have and some would argue essential - I've had it on other cars, but in the years I've been driving I think ABS is more relevant day to day than ESP.

The brochure gives ESP as an option on manual with 2 wheel drive.

The only time I had ESP operate on my X-Trail was under extreme conditions - it worked!

WE have a 1.2 SE DSG, and in UK ESP is available on 2WD SE versions for £390, but if you go for Park Assist at £460 you get front/rear sensors and ESP included as well. Don't know if it is the same in Spain though. Jessica

I ordered ESP on my 1.2 S because I did not want to be without it. I have not had it cut in yet for the Yeti but have activated it plenty of times before on othewr cars. I would hesitate to buy any car without it.

I thought ESP was standard in the UK on the 1.2 if you got the DSG box?

It may be, I'm not sure. We got Park Assist anyway, and have ESP, just assumed it was part of the Park Assist pack, but you may be right.

I really hope so, because we are picking up our DSG petrol Yeti on 1st September  and we wanted ESP... but thought it was standard.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, keep them coming. I didn't order park assist, I have ordered front and rear sensors (great addition to cars, especially when trying to park in the narrow roads of Spain) and thought that would be sufficient. I think I will go back tomorrow and order park assist (hopefully it will not be too late) and then I have covered both park assist and dsg bases. Hopefully ESP will then be included on my car.

Hi Carinco,

The ESP is a good safety feature, but I suspect the park assist is not accurate enough for your Spaninsh parking challenges. I am fully convinced you normally have to park in much shorter spaces with a much tighter tolerance than the Park Assist will handle. We found that the nicely rounded front corners and tight turning radius made parking in the small villages on Costa del Sol very easy - although you cannot see the bonnet on the car parked behind you through the rear window. Fortunately, the bumpers are nice and soft, so nobody gets excited if you just kiss their (car's) front or rear.

We have neither park assist nor sensors, but managed anyway.

Worry not, I've just checked in our brochure, page 11, and the spec for the 'S' gives 'ESP incl. on 4x4 and 1.2 TSI DSG only', also Hill Hold Control on the 1.2 DSG only. If you've got a manual 1.2 it costs £390 extra for ESP!!

Whether this is the same for Spain I don't know.

Incidentally, you will love the DSG/1.2 combination, over our first 1000 miles it has regularly been giving mid-forties in MPG, and the gear changes are hardly noticeable, and very nippy and agile. Best car we've had by far.

Will make a change from our Fabia then. It's seven years old and with only four gears the changes are rather obvious...

Thanks for checking the ESP situation though, was a must for us as the Yeti is to transport the little 'un. :)

Hi Agerbundsen,

Thanks for your comments. I have ordered the park assist today, I wasn't to late to do it. You are right about the tight spaces we have to try and get into. However, I have rear sensors on my current car and that has been one of the best things I have had on a car. So with front and rear sensors parking should be a doddle!!! The salesman in our Skoda dealership said that the Yetis is just under 5 metres long and the park assist will fit it onto a 6 metre gap?? I do not know if I will use it but my wife said she will has she has never parallel parked in her life, yet???? We do often watch the Spaniards around here park and leave spaces and a 'gentle' touch back and front certainly helps them know when the hit the car either side. We always cringe but it seems to be the norm here. We always say that you really don't live here unless your car has a few bumps and scratches.

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for the info'. My Spanish is not good enough to translate all the technical stuff in the Spanish brochure nor to get into detailed technical (or so detailed) thoings with the sales rep. I have ordered a 1.2 TSI DSG plus added park assist. So I am hoping we are covered. Thanks for the info on MPG. My current car gives me between 29 to 32 mpg so I look forward to the savings.

The Yeti is actually only 4.22 meters long, so you will have no problems parking at Mercadona either. Tight turning radius makes it easy to get in and out in the tight aisles too. We spemd a month in Benalmadena Pueblo, so i understand the conditions there.

Scratches on the four corners of the bumper is really a badge of honor in your part of the world - that's why the bumpers are plastic :dull:
