Water Ingress / Sealing Drivers Door

Featured Replies

Shock horror I've had water ingress in my drivers side door thats taken out my central locking, heated mirrors etc etc, I've tracked down spare parts and am ready to do the repair however I've been put off by the fact that the door will no doubt be still leaking hence the same problem will happen again!

I'm unsure as to how the water gets in although I suspect the window seal to be at fault? My understanding is though that water should run down between the window, seal and outter side of the door not going anywhere near the mech on the bits between the door card and window regulator or am I getting this totally wrong?

Any water proofing ideas would be very helpful!

Hi there

I recently had the pleasure of replacing the regulator mechanism on the drivers side. The water had rotted the metal cable which drives the mechanism and snapped. Fitted a new mechanism (£70) and all is fine now. Had to order a new waterproof membrane (you will need one, £13) so I could see it all working for a week. The window seal doesn't clear all the water off the window and when it passes the seal, water droplets reform on the glass inside the door, then drip down the mechanism & do the damage. I think using a decent window cleaner, like autoglym fastglass would stop this happening.

Be careful when removing the door clips. When they are originally fitted, they are pushed in then a plastic plunger is pushed in to splay open the ends and hold it firmly in the door. So when removing them, pull out the plastic part & the door clip will fall out. It appears water has got into your door, dripped down the wiring loom and damaged the control module. Might get away with cleaning it or may need a new loom & control module. I think there are some pictures on this site, do a search. Took over 2 hours to do, so allow yourself plenty of time.

Thanks harry - yes sure is the control module as I mentioned I already had a new one to fit .... mine was totally trashed, pins missing and all sorts, really not impressed with Skoda/VAG truth be told. I've not bothered warterproofing yet as the last one lasted 3 years and now I know i'm going to have it all apart..... again!!

Drivers door central locking is still not working, nor is the drivers side heated mirror however the door and 'you've left your lights on' alarm is back up and running which is one bonus I suppose!

So the question is.... should i replace the drivers door loom? Or the drivers doo lock mechanism even though it opens and closes all doors with the key but not remotely from the fob?!

If the control module had pins missing, you might have to replace the loom as well as it is probably corroded on the contacts. I would fit the new module first, that should cure the door locking problem.

I have posted this question elswhere on here but no answer as yet, I also have the same issue with water ingress etc. but my local VW "specialist" would not do the work as he "would not be able to code the new convenience unit to the car"? I was sure that I had read that you could change these parts yourself? He advised me to go to a main stealer.

Any advice greatfully received!
