Alternative place to mount Spare Wheel

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Has anybody had any thoughts on alternate places to store the spare wheel?

I would like a spare wheel (full size) and also take some bikes inside the car for security reasons. I had been thinking along the lines of the old Disco/anything else that has it mounted to the rear door.

I know it couldn't mount to the tailgate, and would have to hinge separately, either side or bottom (heavy to lift back) hinge.

Any other thoughts?

Mike

This was extensively discussed some time ago and ruled out as a possibility, try searching the forum for more detail

I collected my spare cleared the boot laid the spare in flat side down, secured it with a couple of bungees ,covered it with a heavy blanket , seems OK useful to place items inside wheel, I may stick with this as I was not happy with the amount of space lost when using the false floor. If I sell the yeti ill replace the boot floor and rubber mat all in new condition ,return the gunge and pump to the boot and sell the hopefully unused spare to a fellow Yeti owner.

Some time ago The Plumber tried some options with a full size alloy wheel, including one of it standing vertically in the boot, including photos, but I can't find them now. Maybe if he reads this he will be able to give you a link. Jessica

Hi Mike,

messed about with one of my Dolomites in the boot while I was running on winters in response to a similar question way way back. Found that fitting it in place of the spare raised the false floor hight a bit also tried it standing up.

Photo's can be found in the SMOC flickr group My link

There was also discussion around fitting a spare to a modified tow bar mounted cycle carrier, as this apparently is used in Australia by some Tiguan owners how were not happy with the skinny space-saver (for obvious reasons).

Regards,

TP

Thanks for that everyone.

That has answered many questions.

I'll have another look when I have mine & maybe resurrect my very rusty engineering design skills.

I've seen a lot of Mercedes ML's around with the spare wheel mounted on a carrier that is fitted under the car. An aftermarket one cost about £900, which is very expensive, But it might be an answer to my question...

I wonder if this could be made to work?

mmm..not sure about that...takes a big chunk out of the rear view window visibility and makes the car about 9 inch longer. I'm happy with my slimbo jimbo wheel under the false floor but appreciate it does make the boot smaller.

Interesting this.

Found the Tiguan solution - not the most fancy looking, I have to say!

Not sure if the 6 seater option is appropriate for the UK though!

Now that does look like the most credible solution I've yet seen.....

On the roof? You have the rails so just need a cradle to hold it as low as possible without touching the roof. I'm not saying I'd do it or that it would look great or not have other issues, but just thinking sideways (or upwards!).

Have you tried to lift a wheel that high?

There was a german youtube video a few months back that had them going across the USA and they had a roof mounted spare on the Yeti with the cage mounted on the roof bars/rails, but as Lanigraham says, lifting it up there.....But they always had them up there on the expedition Land Rovers, but people were more butch and I guess fitter in those days....emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

And nobody seems to mind if you climb on the chequer plated bonnet of a land rover to reach the roof rack.

Come to think of it, they had an option to mount the spare on the bonnet too.

Now there's an idea :giggle:

I didn't say it was a good idea! Although, how often are you expecting to have to lift it up and down? Having just lifted a Thule roofbox onto my Volvo's roof, then lifting a heavy x-country baby buggy into it, I can appreciate it isn't easy, but it isn't impossible either.
