Parking Sensors

Featured Replies

Finally got around to fitting the rear parking sensors to the Wifes' Fabia yesterday. The kit wasn't genuine Skoda, but the sensors were colour coded to suit the car.

This a short guide to fitting:

As I didn't know the quality of the product (bought from a well known auction website) I plugged the senors & speaker into the module and connected it to a 12v supply to test before fitting.

1) Remove rear light clusters, this is simple, undo the screw inside the boot an pull the light out, remove the large grommet and unplug the light unit and remove.

2) Remove rear bumper, there are 3 torx screws inside the rear wheel arches and a further hidden screw which is on the top edge of the bumper going down into a bracket (photo) Under the bumper there are 2 of the plastic plugs with a pull out centre pin and then bhind the light clusters there are 2 torx screws.

With the fixings removed the sides of the bumper need a firm pull and then the bumper can be removed. Place an old piece of carpet of similar on the ground and lay the bumper on it.

3) Drilling the holes. On the inside of the bumper the 4 sensor positions pre marked with a raised circle inside a rectangle. The circle is about 26mm diameter, but my sensors are 22mm, so I marked the centre of each circle and drilled a 5mm pilot from the inside to the out, then I drilled the 22mm hole with the cutter provided from the outside, so a burr if any will go to the inside. (there was no burr and before I drilled the bumper I tested the cutting tool on a piece thin perspex to check the quality of the cut and to check the hole size)

4) fitting the sensors. The sensors just pushed in and located. I fixed the sensor cables to the inside of the bumper with some self adhesive cable tie pads & cable ties. In the back of the spare wheel well here are 2 large grommits (probably for towbar cables) I made a hole in the centre of one of these and fed the cables through it.

5) replace the bumper (reverse of removal)

6) site the module. I removed nearly all of the boot space trim panels, these are held in with screws, clips and those plugs with centre pins. The module came with a self adhesive pad, so I placed this behind the n/s inner trim onto wheel arch where there was some space and it was near to the reverse light feed. I found the feed for the reversing light and paired the insulation and soldered the module wire to it and covered it with insulation tape. (don't Connect to the wire on the lamp cluster side of the plug, because if you have to remove the lamp at some stage the module wire will be attached)

I made an earth terminal and used a self tapping screw to a small plate at the rear of the spare wheel well.

7) Fit the speaker. There was only enough cable to use the speaker in the boot, but I wanted it in the 'B' pillar. So I cut, soldered and insulated an extention cable. Remove the door rubber seal, B pillar trim and carpet trim. The speaker also had a self adhesive pad, so I place it insde the B pillar and cable tied the cable to some existing cables along the edge of the seat and over the rear wheel arch.

8 Test! I tested the system before tidying up the cables and replacing the trim panels. It worked!

Just goes to show, sometimes, you're just better doing things yourself. Doubt a garage would do as good a job as this.

Top writeup  canny beat retrofit pr0n

Looks like a really neat job, well done!

MIne came with the parking sensors from the factory and I am finding them waaaay too sensitive - ended up backing into my drive and stopping with about four feet between the back of the car and the wall because the sensors told me i was about to smack into it!

These retrotit sensors work at about the same distances as the factory fitted ones on Octy. They start to beep at about 1.5 -2.0 metres and continously beep at about 200mm.

This information was so usefull for me today, printed it off and followed it just like instructions, fitted mine today and very happy with them, look good to, £13.50 brand new off ebay.

Thanks for your effort and help.

Nice job.

You got a link to the listing ?

Did they come with a plug into the radio?

because when I put mine in reverse it shows up on the Dance unit.

I also agree they are way to sensitive!
