i'm right on my high horse now...

how can an insurance company justify a £250 increase in premium over last years amount?? haven't claimed or got any points or anything.. except earned another years NCD :wonder:

i've tried to call them up to tell them they are taking the **** but all i get is put through to some kitchen in mumbai where nobody appears to speak english.

strange thing is, I went on a compare the market and i was getting a quote from the same company who i'm currently insured with for £270 less than the premium they are now charging me. i've got half a mind to cancel the policy and re-insure it with them with a new policy... what a bunch of total toss-wits

anybody else getting this sort of thing or just me?

Yep, my quote went up a similar amount and the only thing different this year is I now have 25+ years of no claims discount (I realise this figure is capped). Changed insurers, but still paying a packet. Not happy.

They all try it on. No reward for loyalty. It's why I (along with many others I imagine) tend to move insurer each year, for the best deal. This year has been the only year ever where I've stayed put (with Brentacre).

It sounds like you use one of the big boys, so just move to another company - I'm sure the level of cover will be comparable. Or yes, as you say - just cancel and come back as a 'new customer' if you really think they're worth it :)

Insurance has risen across the board, quiet dramatically over the last 12 months. It doesnt seem to matter how old you are, even if you have made no claims premiums have gone through the roof.

The number of claims for injuries as well as the cars themselves are pushing premiums up, along with uninsured losses.

You want to try having an 18 year old on your insurance!!

7 year old Fiesta 1.4 with son as named driver has just gone up from £2400 to £3000 / year :'(

Insurance is a swindle in the UK. Its a vicious circle, insurance becoming more expensive because more people can't afford it. I am not playing the blame 'immigrants' card here, but at my work alone there are maybe 10 Polish blokes that aren't insured. I know at least 2 don't even have a license. At the same time i must be clear that other Polish guys are insured, have UK licenses, NCBs and are great drivers. I just wanted to use this as an example, not to berate Polish folk. I have lost count of how many acquaintances have written cars off, i don't know how they do it to be honest. Its such a stupid car culture in this country really its polarised by a massive margin. They'll buy an old Ford Escort, because they know it'll be written off, totaled and in a ditch or the back of another car in no time.

I'm currently paying £1500 TPF&T for my SAAB 9-5. That is only £200 more than a like-for-like quote on a 2001 1.25 Fiesta Zetec. My renewal from Aviva this year is something silly like £2.5k - somehow. I can't actually get anything lower than £1.5k on it, despite having been driving a year, with No Claims. I guess the price inflation has balanced out my potential discount?

So, the reason i am wanting the VRS is for the cheap insurance for the type of car. Its strange for it to be a group 9 (old categories) and be a warm hatch :) I was originally going to get an RS Clio 172 or 182. However, the insurance on those were £2.5k - the same, i might add, for an RS Megane 225! I'm not really an experienced enough driver to be touching those anyway though, so its a good thing really. :) Anyway, i have a quote using Endsleigh Student Policy for £1100 Fully Comp, and thats with 5000 Miles of Business Use and 12,000 annual commuting. Happy days :)

I still managed to pay less for my renewal in February, then I did for the previous year.

So it can be done - just of course depends on the car, location, personal circumstances etc etc - a heck of a lot of variables to be taken into consideration.

I had the same thing as the OP. My renewal was about £100 more, so I tried a new quote logged in anonymously & got quoted about £80 cheaper.

I've been with my insurer (Swiftcover) for about 5yrs but that annoyed me so I went on MoneySupermarket & got a deal with More Than for about £25 less than my original renewal.

And for all the elderly out there -after a poke around on the net, I got a letter from 50plus Insurance - www.50plusinsurance.co.uk - type in your renewal amount ,and company ,and they guarantee to knock the premium down by 10% - I used last years and was pleasantly surprised to get a quote using my present Insurance co of nearly 13% down , plus protected ,plus free roadside cover .Strangely enough ,again for the elderly (50+) Rias ( for me ) were surprisingly good - they matched the 50+ quote ,with protected bonus .
Now ,as Lady E says -bonus's are capped -and worse . After a long spell in company cars ,I came back to my own insurance to get a juicy bonus over 13-15 years ago . My NBC is protected- but thats 2 in 5 years - after that it drops ,to what - ???.

Despite SWMBOs accident in the snow (bout £800 of damage + lie-for-like hire car plus I took out), and the obv requirement to claim for the baby's car seat on top (£300), our insurance renewal landed today.

A whole £1.56 more than last years, so I'll be renewing with Directline again.

ha, been doing some digging about today, and if i put my grandad on as a named driver it makes it £100 cheaper, he must have like 3000 years no claim discount by now, i think he drove a horse and cart to the opening of stonehenge...

Yep, can be a good option that - adding a 'low risk' additional driver.

Insured my golf on a classic policy this year, with an agreed insurance value, total premium 118 quid, bargain and i can dust off the old skyline soon as she hits 20 and add her to the same policy for 50 quid extra, so a 400 bhp car, agreed values all fo 168 quid a year fully comp

Yeah I got no reward for loyalty at all: my insurance went up year on year so shopped around and got £100 off. Ironically the policy is underwritten by the same group.

For those that use the on line comparison sites - have a quick look at the brokers - pound to a pinch of dogs droppings ,it'll be BISL . ( HSBC brokers ) .
