Okay so here goes my full review which some people buying the Superb may find helpful. Sorry if I am being obvious on some of these points..

Car: Brilliant silver Superb Estate Elagance DSG 170 TDi. Added: 3 spoke wheel, auto mirror, sunset glass, front sensors

Outside

The car in the flash is big. On my drive it dominates a Honda Civic and a Fiat 500.. it makes them look like small toys. It has a look that show style and class and also shows uniqueness. I love that about it.. the second glances you get when driving it.. I feel very smug when on the road. The paintwork is really very good, very smooth. The wheels have gained quite a lot of dirt in only a few days (thermisto).

When approaching the car and clicking the remote you get the headlights and rear lights coming on as well as spots under the mirrors. This is really useful. I don't like having to double click to unlock all doors, but I think this can be changed in the maxidot somewhere. I also got rid of the beep when the alarm is set in the maxidot.. it was driving me mad.

Inside

This is my first skoda, so it is all new to me. The controls are okay. The controls for the air con are in a bit of a silly place as you have to look down and take your eye off the road to change temp.. My civic has amazing ergonomics and I will miss that kind of detail. The sat nav is a bit awkward to set, and the touchscreen is a bit laggy. It is not too bad, but I have pressed things twice when they had been selected on the first press, and this took me further away from where I wanted to be. Okay when you are not moving, but a bit of a pain if you are trying to drive. I have an iPhone 4 and it connects and works brilliantly with the superb. I am loving using it and the sound quality is very good. The overall feel for the dash is excellent quality, I just wish things were in slightly more ergonomic positions. The seats seem pretty good, I am not sure I have optimum setup just yet, but it is comfy. I dont have as much side support as the civic, but the leather in the superb has a slight roughness (unshiny) compared to our fiat 500, which you slide all over the place in. The seats feel nice and comfy and the seat heaters work... The air con temperature seems a bit random at the moment, 19 feels to cold, while 20 feels to hot, not sure I have really got to grips with that yet.

When everyone sees it they say.."that's big!" .. (insert your own joke here) - but it feels strange when they say that bacause it really does not feel big to drive. If you take a corner a touch too fast then it feels a big long, but I have not had it feel big.. The parking sensors are great too (added front ones too) - they really help manoeuvre the car, and the rear visibility is excellent.

Space

I have two kids, one 5 months and one 2 1/2. The ca seats fitted well with the isofix, although the isofix loops in the back are quite deep inside the seats, therefore I can imagine that the leather will mark/get squashed after a while. Mothercare sell seatc overs that sit between the car seat and the leather that help protect the seats. I think this will be worthwhile. The tinted widows are actually really good and I am not sure I even need blinds. Our two year old uses a maxi-cosi car seat and he cannot touch the back of my seat with his shoes.. which is heaven!

The boot seems really good, there is plenty of space and a nice flat surface at the back (which I have already used to change a nappy..) the runners and cross bars seem a little bit awkward to push and pull along the runners, and I can imagine that it could be awkward if they get full or gradually get filled with dirt. Space in the front is fine..

Driving

This is I think the best bit. My car has the DSG and the 170 bhp diesel, and it just feels right. It fells quick without feeling racy. I find that I actually drive slower, but when I want to I can push harder. The power is delivered really smoothly (unlike an old golf gti PD I used to drive). It doesn't give you that ummff, but it gives you the power in a much more liveable way.. it feels smooth, but positive. Your passengers will thank you for the smooth power.

Diesel? Yes it is, although you wouldn't really know it. I started the car with the windows down earlier and realised it was a diesel.. I keep saying DIESEL DIESEL when I approach the petrol pumps!

I live in an area with lots of hills, and I was slightly worried the DSG would get a bit confused either ascending or descending, but it doesn't - It seems to select a lower gear when descending and downshifts smoothly when pulling up an incline.. and with those pounds of torque.. it certainly gets up those hills!

It handles the a roads well and soaks up the bumps easily. You always feel relaxed.

On the motorway it really shines, and is so smooth. The power is always there if you need it too. The cruise control is really good and fluent to use.

Okay, so that is my short review...

Plus points:

- Amazing engine/gearbox combo

- unique look on the road

- Space

- Luxury feel and ride quality

Negative points:

- Rather laggy sat nav

- Controls not immediately at hand

- nothing else!

The controls are okay. The controls for the air con are in a bit of a silly place as you have to look down and take your eye off the road to change temp.

The sat nav is a bit awkward to set, and the touchscreen is a bit laggy.

You have highlighted some very good points! good review :) I wonder what others experience on above points have been.

I can explain the big look not feel thing.

When I had my MK1 she looked a big car, but then I realised, the bigness is behind you, so you get the effect of still only looking out as far as a Mk5 Passat or Octavia, width wise the new model feels slimmer than the old, but I think it's actually the other way around, I'm resisting taking one out on the road until the prices drop, I know i'll want one, so I don't allow my head to operate the hands that open the wallet, the Passat is fine in the meantime, although it is also a narrow boat.

Nice report

Very wise move Superbia! I had always intended to buy a 12/24 month old used Superb estate and was happy to wait ......... that was until I test drove a 12 month old Passat and loved it (the Superb is even better than the Passat - just like the MKI Superb is better than the B5.5).

I got IMO a very good deal on a new one that I was prepared to pay the 'extra' to buy new - which is actually quite a bit less than I have seen several dealers pricing their ex-demonstrators for (and with less options!).

The pricing is stupid tbh, but it's the supply and demand thing doing it, until people stop going in for one and they're sitting around unsold they won't drop, they outpace a Passat by £3k right now, a £15k Passat is a £18k Superb, and I wouldn't advise anyone wanting a Passat to buy one until next year when the "new" one arrives, hopefully by then they won't have squeeky dashboards, and VW will have restored the sport seats to the range.

Do you find that it sticks out in car car parks or is awkward to park in anyway, as we are considering one but worrying about the length? :wonder:

BTW nice choice!

Most parking bays are not long enough for a Superb (even the MKI Superb) reversing sensors help no end here so you can get as far back into the bay as possible .

The Honda Accord Tourer is a similar length to the Superb Estate; 4750 vs 4838mm (source Parkers.co.uk). While I'm concious of the length, parking the Accord has never been a problem in anything but the shortest parking spaces; and that is without the rear parking sensors standard on the Superb.

Hi - It stuck out today at Tescos, but it made it easier to find on the way back ;-)

My understanding of the latest Superb is that the satnav now has voice control. Have you tried this feature? If so how good is it? Nice review by the way.

Hi Mark - I tried the voice control last night. It picks up your voice very well, and made no mistakes, so I think this could be useful. The button to initiate voice control is a very small one next to the CD drive, and it would be better if there was one on the wheel. I think once you have learnt the "lingo" it could work very well.

Excellent review emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I'm looking to replace my 07 L&K early next year with a CR170 4x4 Elegance Estate. With a bit of luck the prices will come down and the choice of used models will go up.

I am struggling with the idea of splashing out £26k+ after options etc on what will be a workday hack doing over 50,000 miles per annum. 18-20 would be more like it emoticon-0144-nod.gif We have a nice shiny Yeti doing the family car duties.

I will agree the climate controls are not as simple to use as they are in my pre FL Octavia, the Yeti shares the Superb controls and they are not the easiest to use on the move. Its a shame they could not be angled upwards slightly.

And why on God's earth is the auto dimming mirror an optional extra???? emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Despite the minor gripes, the Superb is still my top choice after looking at all of the competition.

The wait is currently 20+ weeks so if you ordered today you will not get the car until February/March I reckon, until this comes down drastically you are NEVER going to get one for you intended price, 23-24K maybe but not 20K IMO.

If you push the scroll wheel volume button it activates the voice control the same as the button on the unit.

Nice!! *jealous*

I'd like to know more about the voice control. How can you tell if your car has it? My Superb was delivered mid-Aug. I vaguelly remember two buttons on the right of the CD slot, one of which has a microphone on it. Is this it?

Also, on a completely seperate issue (sorry for hijacking), how does one get the Columbus tp pick up ones iPhone music using Bluetooth? My work works fine with the car for phoning, but I couldn't see how to access the music list on the Columbus.

It has voice control.. small button next to CD slot, or press the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel.

You can play iPhone music via bluetooth, but you have to control it on the phone and not through the columbus. If there is a connection you'll see an ipod in the maxidot. Press media and you'll see top right on the screen a bluetooth icon. If you select that you can play music through bluetooth. It works with ipod app and spotify app.

A photo for you all.. ;-)

Great post - love looking at these photos!!

Very nice - I want one mine!

OT, ukcruiser is that the Skoda rubber bootliner in your car?

Im unsure whether to buy the OE one or some thick butyl rubber pondliner for mine (I need it to be water proof, as it will have wet diving gear on it) mine will have the variable boot floor as well though.

Yes matey,

thats the Skoda boot liner - it's really thick rubber - there is another version, with a "lip" but you cant use the luggage rails with it... and it's £150...
