Hi

Has anyone used the millers diesel fuel additive - is it any good? Had any problems.

I have a slightly smoky 2.0tdi - however it only really smokes under harsh acceleration!!

I Use this and it's predecessor Millers diesel sport (IIRC) and never had any problems with it, I found it made my Fabia vRS more responsive and a slight increase in fuel economy.

I was going to start a topic about this myself.

I had developed quite a bit of smoking on hard acceleration on my remapped Octavia PD140 which has been running on BP ultimate. Really obvious at night in the headlights behind.

Thought I would try some additive to see if it made a difference so got some ecomax.

The smoking has pretty much cleared up after putting in a double dose. Don't know if it is because it has cleaned up the injectors or because of it's impact on cetane etc. I may run a tank through without additive to see if the smoking comes back.

Worth a try for 12 quid from halfords.

Millers is just 2EHN (2-ethyl hexyl nitrate) watered down with kerosene. 2EHN increases detonation ('cetane improver'). If you want to use it then buy it neat for about £15 for a litre. Add to your Diesel fuel at about 0.1% by volume. It will work out vastly cheaper than Millers.

The product itself is excellent and used it myself for about 3 or 4 years to fantastic effect on old 1.9 tdi AHU engine. No longer smokes and flies through MOT smoke tests 1st time on "fast pass".It makes the engine purr (well,sort of) at low speed instead of sounding like a tractor.

However the latest bottle design is a disaster and as yet never manged to use it without getting my hands, bottle and car covered in the stuff. Hence regrettably I will probably no longer use it.

I agree the new bottle design is dreadful and I won't be buying until they go back to the old bottle.

Used Millers for quite some years. My vRS TDI loved a diet of Shell VPower and Miller Diesel Sport 4 (double dose every time).

I've not got to use the new EcoMax yet as I have yet to finish a 5L bottle of DieselSport 4 that I bought a year or so ago.

I was thinking about buying in bulk as it brings the price down to the equivalent of 7 quid a bottle.

How do you measure and get it into your tank from the 5l can?

Would it not be simpler & more cost effective to simply purchase a reputable brand of diesel in the first instance??

Why do some people be susceptible to thinking that they can DIY blend better fuel than Shell, BP, Esso or others.

we are not in Kazackastan or Outer Mongolia, where perhaps such additives have a place.

I must admit, I always try to use regular ('FuelSave' now) Shell diesel, due to various people I know having worked at Stanlow, and seeing the difference in additive packs that goes into their own tankers compared to the ones they fill up for their competitors. But the nearest Shell garages to me aren't particularly convenient, so I keep a bottle of Miller's in the garage for the times when I have to add it to supermarket diesel. FWIW, I don't bother with V Power, Ultimate or Excellium as they give worse fuel economy IME. Certainly V Power can be proven to do so, due to being synthetic and actually less dense than mineral diesel - hence you need to use more volume to get the same 'bang'...

Hmm, interesting approach. I use standard Shell fuel whereever possible, so it isn't what I'd consider poor quality, or indeed a level of fuel for Outer Mongolians. And I've been using Millers in conjunction with this fuel for 5yrs or so now. It makes a difference. That's all I know. And it makes more of a difference than running Shell V-Power or some such other 'premium' diesel offering.

So perhaps it's that fuel companies don't want to add this level additive, due to costs reasons.

Not been my experience.

After running BP ultimate for the last 10k miles and seeing the smoking getting worse, using millers ecomax in standard diesel has seen the smoke disappear.

Costs between 70p and £1.20 a tank depending on where you buy from compared to £3 to £4 a tank extra for premium diesel.

Agree with last 2 posters. I don't hardly see any difference between premium brand, high performance or standard fuels. Millers does make a real difference though. I can vouch for its injector cleansing ability (its slow but sure) and I'm sure thats what makes it smoke less and gives an mpg improvement (restoration is a better word). The Cetane boost definitely makes it a better starter and smoother operator (from cold).

Smoothness is the nice bit.

This is on an old rotary pump Tdi - I did try it for a while on a CR multijet Corsa - didnt make much difference but it was a new car so nothing to clean.

Here in the wilds of Derbyshire Shell garages are few and far between. I'd need to make ~ 40 min return trip to find one in Chesterfield area.

Why do you want to pay Millers a crazy price for it? 2EHN is a Cetane Improver that is already added to Diesel fuels, you are just adding a bit more. You can buy neat 2EHN for about £15/litre. Add it to your tank at 0.1% by volume (that's about one teaspoonfull per gallon of fuel!).

Cetane Improvers will certainly improve auto-ignition and reduce emissions and injector carbonisation so they DO work. 2EHN is the most popular, but there are 20+ others in use (e.g. idi-tert-butyl peroxide, iso-octyl nitrate, di-nitro propane and iso amyl nitrate). The fuel manufacturers add just enough CI to meet the EN standards, and not more.

Many oil distributors sell it.

It is also routinely used by people making their own biodiesel (you have to add it to raise the Cetane number). There are quite a few 'brands', Veggiboost is welll known:
