DRL's

Featured Replies

Last week was on holiday in Isle of Wight.

One day we went to Ryde and while driving down the seafront the old bill had a side street closed because of an accident, so as we approached the junction there was a copper there making sure people didn't try to use the street.

He then ran into the road with his hand up in front of me and proceeded to inform me that my foglights were on I told him they were DRL's to which he says, "No there not", excuse me sir is my car I know what's what!!

In the end (while holding up traffic as cars couldn't pass) I had to switch my headlights on then my fogs to prove the point!!!

I did have to laugh at the fact I was holding up an entire road while Mr. Copper went on!

Just thought I'd share!

Why are people so stoopid?

You need side or head lights on before your fog lights can be turned on, its been like this for ever! I really don't get why people confuse DRL's and fogs so easily.

I hope you took pride in making him look like a prize plank!

I can understand some confusion but surely the owner of the car should know how to use it! (not always the case I know)

Both my Mitsubishi FTO and Mitsubishi Galant had seperate physical buttons for the fogs and could be turned on independantly of headlights (sidelights needed on the Galant, but nothing needed on thew FTO).

I've had cars with seperate buttons for the fogs but never had a car which you could turn the fogs on without either side or headlights on first?

Amazed me with the FTO that I could. Front and back ones were independant of the main light switch - often wondered if it should have passed the SVA...

I only used them a couple of times, but loved the front fogs as they were a dual filament bulb in the lower front side-lights, so simply brightened the side-lights a lot rather than an extra light housing (bit like DRL/fogs on my Elegance, just a single bulb rather than two).

Wasn't trying to be annoying mentioning it, just wondered if the police have often met it, especially with people who fit "driving lights" or front fogs to cars. Loads of lads with Fiestas round here have done just that and drive round with them on constantly (and wrong coloured bulbs in them too).

Have a good evening all

Unfortunately, some police officers (and I stress only some), think they know everything car related but in actual fact know very little.

I remember a time many years ago when I was driving my Nova SR 1.4 (rapid car for an 18 year old back in the 90's!). Was giving my girlfriend at the time a lift home and I got pulled over by the fuzz. The copper said "Do you know why we've pulled you?" To which I could only reply "Because you can?".... The copper then said astonishingly, "no lad, we've asked you to pull over as there has been a red metro reported stolen in this area with a male of around 17-18 driving, whilst accompanied by a female of approximately the same age". When I asked "Ok, this is a Nova so how can I help you?", the nice policeman said...... "ermmm, Yes, errrm, I know this is a Volkswagon Nova, I wanted to see if you'd spotted a red Metro on your travels?"

I didnt have the heart to tell him it was actually a Vauxhall and not a Volkswagon!

That´s why I put these on and did a small trick to eliminate the error to check bulb

Interesting, was the FTO ever officially imported into Britain? Maybe the Jap's have different uses for the front fogs? There used to be an FTO round here, it was a flying machine, and rare too!

Does anyone know what is the difference between fog lights, spot lights and driving lights?

I understand the role of fogs, I'm guessing spot lights are the big aftermarket / Hella roof / grill mounted rally lights, but what about driving lights?

I heard that car's have had these fitted from new before and that they are actually designed to be used legally in conjuction with dipped headlights? I could of course be completely making this up!

Japanese cars do not have fog lights fitted since it is not a requirement over there (heard somewhere but not sure if it is true that they do not have fog). This is why you see all imported japanese cars will have aftermarket fogs fitted (also probably why the FTO lights worked independantly of the main lights).

This applies to the rear fogs, I was referring to the fronts, sorry should have been clearer.

Did you have to wire in a resistor as well? I have read elsewhere that LED substitution for tungsten filament is not a straightforward swap.

I'd an agitated Audi driver in front of me last weekend indicating furiously that I had my front fogs on. Oh how we laughed. Had the odd flash from other motorists; just waiting the chance to speak to the constabulary.emoticon-0105-wink.gif

As said, I can have my front fogs on, without the headlights, if I wished.emoticon-0103-cool.gif

My 2005 Mazda 6 had rear (and front) fogs, as do the Mazda range in general.

Yes, but you need minimum of side lights on.

This is why I find it strange that some people can confuse DRL's and fogs.

Side lights or Head lights on = fogs

No side lights or headlights = DRL's

Don´t mind the LED bulb on these pictures. The bulb on is a 68 small led from ebay.

DO NOT USE RESISTERS FOR 21W BULBS, IT GETS REALLY, REALLY HOT AND MAY START TO MELT, sorry for caps.

You can see that using a parking bulb 5W hocked up on the wires on the back it loads the signal. DO NOT worry about the heat and when its on you cannot see the light produced by it.

The cottom part is a piece of rockwool ( isolation) do not cover the hole bulb, it will keep the heat inside and will blow it.

With this, if you take out the led bulb ou or the normal 5W it will show up to check the front DRL bulb.

I also did this for the same type of LED on the rear reverse lights, only a 3W bulb is used.

Use always VAgcom after to erase all erros that have been registered because of this, after erased nothing will show up.

Thanks for that, I had heard this was the better way round the bulb failure warning (I'm not too keep on turning the warning off completely) and know that the resistors can get VERY hot.

Did you try this bulb in the DRL?

img9541i.jpg

If so was it any good or do you need one like the ones you finally fitted?

the bulb you see does not put very much light out and its a little for the blue side, and the light itself is projected forward only.

the picture on earlier post with 68 mini leds are white and bright and easily seen at any distance and projects everywhere.

Yes I know! :dull:

So what did you mean by this then?

All new UK cars have to have rear fogs by law...
