So what mileage have you got from your Superb?

Recommended Posts

Had my 1.9 PD for 6 1/2 years now, mileage knocking on for 230k miles now.

In that time the biggest jobs i've had done are - flywheel/clutch - intercooler - egr valve - and now i've got a small leak from the radiator, but I won't be rushing to get a new one put on - serviced the car regularly myself. I'm thinking of getting another (second hand) one in the new year and wondered if i've been particularly lucky with mine or is it a genuinely robust model?

Biggest bug bear i've found is replacing cv boots every 5 minutes - can't do that job myself so i'm looking at £50 evert time one pops.

oh, and the synchro into 3rd gear went about 40 or 50 thousand miles ago, but hasn't affected performance in the slightest, and no sign of any other gearbox issues - TOUCH WOOD.

This proves the point that these are well made and durable vehicles - but most never get to this mileage.

The B5.5 has some serious design faults and a very poor dealer network who have no interest in addressing these. How many dealers pro actively recommend greasing the suspension pinch bolts, removing the plenum bungs, replacing the pollen filter outer seal and a hundred other things? VAG have chosen to not only to deliberately ignore all these faults - some very serious and safety related - but to carry them all over from the Passat to the Superb.

Getting to 230k miles is a tribute to your good maintenance - the 1.9 PD is a good engine.

CV boots are a pain. If you look at a failed boot, they always crack on the outside at the bottom of the pleat. The rubber is too stiff and there are too few pleats in the boot for the angle it turns through. I smear the outside of the boots with silicone grease annually to keep them soft - you never see a boot cracked on the inside where the grease is.

Running a Superb your way is the way to get good value out of it - I'm aiming to do the same. Old Superbs are worth peanuts (petrol ones next to nothing).

I've read about this "CV Boot" - what is it please? It seems common, but not sure what it is...And I have tried to look, i promise - but everyone just goes straight into it.

It's a rubber boot or seal that covers the rear side of each front CV joint (right behind each front wheel). It has "pleats" or ridges in it to give it room to move as you steer and the inside is packed with grease to keep the CV joint smooth. But it's the achilles heel of the model. It's always failing. And usually the owner doesn't t know it's failed till much later when the CV joint begins to "knock" on full lock. That's because the grease has all dropped out and the CV joint has been running dry for sometime with lots of water and crap getting into it over time. By that time it's usually a new joint and boot to fix the problem.

Ah CV = constant velocity? I remember when I looked at the Mot history of mine after I bought it, out had one side changed in one year and the other one in the next year.

Will look at greasing when weather is a bit better.

Thanks.

Ha ha, I wouldn't say that - I spent 3 years putting the wrong oil in.

Only had one suspension element fail in all that time too - which I find staggering considering the number of potholes I hit every day.

Im at 255 thousand and all ive needed is clutch and flywheel in all that time. I do have a slight prob with lack of power between 1500 and 2000 rpm but still havent got round to investigating it further, i bunged on a new fuel filter but to no avail so will get it into the garage at some point when it becomes more annoying to drive. Biggest expense has been tyres and brakes. Not had the cv boot problem ever.

Amazing not to have had a cv issue in all that time!

Funnily enough mine is fine on tyres, usually use Hankooks. Brakes pads are a slight annoyance, as they become clinky/clunky as they wear down, can sound as if they're due for a change - topping up the fluid doesn't help resolve it either, but if you strip them down and have a look there's usually loads of life left in them. Strange.

I have a 05 1.9 Comfort with currently 125k miles on it. It is serviced every 10k miles, and the car is still a great drive and I never feel as it might let me down soon. I haven't really had any major problems with it yet.The only 2 things I needed to get fixed were a broken Windows Regulator (got a used Passat one for £20 to do the job) and the alternator belt/pulley had to be replaced as it was making terrible noises.

I also have 2 failed rear parking sensors, but can't be arsed getting it sorted for £100 each.

I feel my car has done bugger all miles compared to these figures. Coming up to 83K miles and still pulls sweet as a nut. Although the engine is probably the only thing that aint broken :D. If it aint essential im not going to fix it. Got 2 broken door locks, faulty temp sensor, one of the puddle lamps stopped working the other day, parking sensors are dead, door rubbers around windows are slightly perished and scracthed all the glass when lowering the windows, all the usual problems :giggle:

I have not read about anyone with a mega miler 2.5 TDi though, do they exist?

Coming up to 140K (so just run in :giggle: ), uses no oil between changes and going strong.

Since I bought it at 105K I've had to replace a few suspension items (damn that pinch bolt) but other than that it's just had services and tyres. I change the auto fluid every 20K too.

I think they'll have to bury me in this

  • 2 weeks later...

Got '03 plate 2.5 TDI at 220k miles owned since new still on original clutch, CV gaiters were failing regularly but now use longer ones seems to have cured the problem. All else works bar parking sensors (put ya head out the window and look!) I use Wan Li Chinese tyres 205's at about £35 per corner and run them at 40psi otherwise wear too quickly. Want 3 more years out of it if i can.

Just out of interest do you take it to the main dealer for the auto box oil change? I did mine at a MD as they were actually cheaper (significantly) than a local specialist who wanted £250 for it (including filter change). Also main dealer recommended fluid change at 40k miles. Manufacturer specifies the auto box "sealed for life". Well, yes, I suppose if you want a 100k mile out of it and then pay £2000+ for a new one. I had mine changed as soon as I got the car at 75k, so planning next change at 115k.

On one of my previous cars, Peugeot 605 diesel, I changed the auto fluid myself, but it was dead easy as a DIY job, unlike the Superb.

On 105 k at the moment, it's the elegance model and it goes through tyres every year.

I had to replace the radiator at about 95 k.

Service due in 2k miles, service every 10 k, but will include the transmission fluid being changed this time
