possible dsg issue - now me!

Featured Replies

Today when coming to a holt, the engine felt like it was stalling, like fluttering. The gear indicator wash flash from D2 to D, then D1 to D. Then it stalled! I restarted and it was ok. Its a petrol, any ideas before I book it in? Its due for a service in Dec so hoping I can wait till then. Otherwise it drives fine.

85 views and not one reply! :wonder:

I looked because I've got a DSG, but (touch wood) I haven't had the problem, so I can't comment :S

I'm not convinced its the DSG cos of the engine flutter, with no jerking or judder the clutch must have been in so wonder if its an idle or EGR valve or something?

You're still in warranty, so book it in!

I will be tomorrow, its due a service (Dec) so will get it booked for service and investigation and if it gets much worse will get them to look at it sooner.

I'd get it looked at sooner if at all possible. If you have an issue, you'd want it looking at as soon as possible. That's my logic anyway.

Another thought is to get a local VAG-COM/VCDS scan done, to see if anything's been logged as a possible cause, which might help you track down the issue.

Gearbox needs to come out, garage said for couple of parts two day job!

Mechatronic replacement? seems quiet common on VAG DSG boxes.

d'oh not good! do they have an idea what it is?

Hi M0bov,

How old is your Octy and how many miles ?

I got a DSG and keeping a close eye on it, 7 months 7000 miles.

10 months and less than 6k! It stalled once and some times the idle is erratic. They said two parts are on 5 day back order and work will take 2 days. I still love the car and DSG so worth it but still a shocker! Updates as I get them!

Good luck James, hope they fix it.

Try and find out which bit went wrong.

I'll be going back to DSG in my next car - and something like this probably wouldnt put me off (as long as it was warranty!)

Needs a "replacement clutch", so I take it as needing a replacement gearbox! Don't get me wrong, DSG is lovely and would still get another.

no you can replace the clutch plates in them around £232

How can they fail at such a low mileage!???

rather worrying, did you have any signs before this?

Though I'm not suprised as a mate in a VW garage has said he has had them in with as little as 1500 miles! His words not mine but its a common issue on the DSG. But then he has also said that they have had alot of the 1.4TSi in with the head gasket gone.

Poor driving style, if you sit in D for prolonged periods, at traffic lights for example then even with the foot brake applied the clutches are still engaged slightly wearing away as you sit there. People say that they disengage when your foot is on the brake but this is not the case. To see what I mean, with your foot on the footbrake move the selector between and N and D and listen carefully, the revs drop slightly and there is a thunk as the drive is partially engaged (not fully, just a little), I always move to N if I know I am going to be there a while. The DSG is not a conventional auto, and I treat mine as if its a manual and so far have had no issues in 30K miles.

Except that the manual says to leave it in D at the lights, so I'm not sure this can be called poor driving style?

The manual does say that, I'd not agree with it though. I wouldn't sit in a manual car with the clutch held down at the lights so I dont in my DSG, anything more than 2-3 seconds and I take it out of D.

Me too.

Then I move selector from N to D, pause for a second with foot on brake and smoothly pull away.

If I dont pause there is always a jerk as if the clutch snatches ?

I don't sit in traffic in D anyway so still at a loss. The only symptom was that it stalled once, so I can only assume if anyone else has this happen with a DSG then its a possible clutch replacement.

Known issue, there is a revised clutch assembly, the fault is clutch creep for those that are interested.

m0bov thanks for the extra information. Just out of interest before it actually stalled on you did it used to feel like it was going to stall? Say if you was slowing in traffic?
