Yeti off road

Featured Replies

SWMBO is spending the day in Aberystwyth, so I decided to go over the Machynlleth for a drive and had a little detour to Glaslyn Lake on the way.

The puddles had a nice layer of ice on them on the way over. I caught these photos on the way back:

Looks wonderful. Machynlleth is where Cochy-bondhu antiquarian books is located- and, on my way back from Aber' one-time, I called in there, having done a lot of business over the years. I defintately did not use that route though! SM looks at home in that landscape.

We also have an SE. Are you still on the original 225mm 17" wheels? Are you thinking of changing them in readiness for any winter snow?

Yes, still on the original wheel and tyres, and I shan't be changing them for winter tyres yet. They have coped with all I've put them through so far!

That's encouraging. We also intend to try out the oem tyres in any snow we may have and then decide if we need to change in the future!

I did wonder if anyone has felt the Haldex 4WD cut in? Shame there is not an icon in the dash display to indicate when in 4WD.

The generation 4 haldex is super smooth, probably because it always puts some power to the rear wheels. However when I boot mine I reckon I can feel an ever so slight pause before the power fully comes in. Best way I could think to describe it is like a very slight flat spot on the engine mapping; initial power, very very slight pause and then the power you would expect.

Of course I could be wrong and just have a mapping flatspot on the engine.

Got that Haldex feeling on Sunday evening having to put the near side wheels on the grass to get out of the way of a fool to far over my way on a narrow rural road. Wet grass dry tarmac across axles; result drive transfer to the offside emoticon-0103-cool.gif

Yes, on the slope in the 4th picture, as I started to drive off it forward. There was a very slight bit of wheel spin from the front then it just drove normally!

Plus I felt it when I purposely drove into some thick mud on a special stage of a rally I was doing radio on earlier.

The only Glaslyn Lake I know is on the A498 below Snowdon - where is the one near Machynlleth?

I got done for speeding just outside Bow Street. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

If you take the mountain road out of Mach, south easterly, towards Dylife and Llanidloes, it takes you past the Wynford Vaughan-Thomas memorial ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wynford_Vaughan-Thomas ) and the lane down to this lake.

MR is: SN 8300 9400 (roughly)

there is a wee icon that lights up in the dash - and i found it when being a bit of a hooligan and driving on wet verges with two wheels and doing a bit of a swerve - it occasionally lit up. Never felt less than secure!!

I wasn't aware of a light that came on for 4x4. I wonder if it might have been the traction control system?

John

Yep - probably! Summat like that, when the beast was under duress, and coping!!

What a maze of roads between Mach and Llanidoes! It looks like moorland and forest. This is why Wales is such a great place for Yetis.

Yes, it will be the tc or ESP light as there's no dash indication of when the haldex is functioning fully.

I've been down that track to Lake Glaslyn a few times when on holiday in Wales. Once in my Yeti just after I'd bought it (had a weeks holiday in October before the Cambrian Rally), and several times previously in my Fabia vRS - the smoother sections of the track are easy going, but some parts of it get a bit interesting in a Fabia!

Well worth it though - its so peaceful and quiet out there in the middle of nowhere - discovered the lake is a lot bigger than it looks on the OS map when you go to walk right round it though - took me several hours!

Here's a couple of photos I've taken of the lake (not both taken on the same day):

It is incredibly peaceful up there.

If you are ever around here Simon give me a call, especially if on a rally.

Certainly will do, will be nice to meet up with another forum member/Yeti owner! You're very lucky to live in such a beautiful area!

It will probably be next year now, I normally come over for most rallies in Wales at least a few days before the event so I can enjoy the scenery - always stop at the same B&B at Dinas Mawddwy, just up the road from Gwyndaf Evans!

Fantastic!

I run an off roading centre, I have offered my dealer free use of it to demo the yeti, lets hope he does!

I can report back with some gory pictures!

Simon,

it is great being just 3 miles from Hafren!!

If you are around let me know.

Well, well istruggle... I think it would be great if we can do a Yeti adventure to your "hobby". I'd be happy to do such a thing if I KNOW my car won't get damaged and where I'm about to go around will be fine.

So how about getting that dealer to find a suitable route through your place and then we can all come over a specific weekend? Would you also have another semi-off road course that could suit the two wheel drive Yetis? We don't want to exclude them!

Had fun today running in the Yeti on the Old Coach Road between Threlkeld and Dockray in the Lake District. What a car! Coped with difficult bits on this road and then having impressed us on the drive off road, the drive home ON road was just a much fun with great handling!

That'll be the track that goes round under Clough Head?
