Two problems with my new vRS GUTTED

Featured Replies

I am absolutely gutted - only had my new vRS petrol for precisely 22 days and 1500 miles and already there are two problems, one potentially serious:

1) when it is raining constantly, I have the rear wiper on , which works well for a few minutes on intermittent. But after a few minutes, it gets stuck in a vertical position. I have to switch it off, and switch it back on, whereupon it resumes it's normal operation. It's an annoyance and nothing compared to pronlem 2:

2) since Sunday, there is a constant "whistling" coming from the engine bay. When the car is switched on from cold and is idling, there is no noise and all is normal. But if you blip the throttle to 2-2.5k, the whistling noise comes on, and it then basically stays on, regardless of speed, throttle position, or turbo boost. It is a very high pitched noise, and I can hear it quite easily from inside the cabin, and it is of course much louder when you open the bonnet. From my limited knowledge, it appears to be turbo related, possibly. The noise is not particularly loud, but it's actually given me tinitus, I can hear the high pitched whistle for several minutes after stopping my journey.

I am taking the car in tomorrow for a diagnostic, but am absolutely gutted (and very depressed) that this has happened to a 1500 mile car. It has shaken my faith in the car. Maybe I was naive to think that a brand new car would mean trouble free motoring... :heartbreak:

Teething in problems, both will be sorted under warranty & any other possible niggles that might arise i the next 3 years! Don't sweat & don't let it dampen your enthusiasm for the car! :)

Asolutely not. New car may ahve bnggles, but you are very much within your right to have it in dealers until it is fixed and they can give you a car which is adquate for your needs until it is fixed. My old fabia vrs's turbo spooled loudly when started on a cold day but was nothing like what you are describing.

Make sure you know the conditions by which the sounds comes - it would make explaining it a lot easier to service dept. of dealer if you can make them hear it themselves...

PS Good luck

+1

I had a few teething problems with mine, and I wouldn't swap it for the world I love it! :giggle:

Well I need a replacement gearbox after only 10 months so I beat you on that one lol. Wiper arm should be easy to sort, but the noise could be anything. I might be a loose hose or something simple so don't worry. Lets hope the garage fix it quickly and promptly and you don't get the "no code no fault" type of service.

Leave it to the garage with a new car, but I'd bet that the first problem would be fixed by disconnecting the battery to reset the controller, and the second one sounds like the auxiliary air pump which is always noisier when it's cold, apparently...

Thanks - the sound happens on every journey, so it's not going to be a problem recreating it for the service dept. I also video-taped the engine bay (including the sound) on Sunday, when I first noticed it, and will take it to them, on a DVD.

At first I thought maybe the cold air made the turbo sound different, but it's happened on every journey I've made since Sunday afternoon, so whatever's happened seems permanent until it can be fixed.

I have tried to treat the car gently for the first few thousand miles, generally kept in under 3000 RPM until engine warmed up, and have certainly not redlined it or anything - so it's all the more disappointing.

Thanks to everyone for the support shown, I needed that! I will keep this thread updated with the outcome, in case it helps somebody else in future.

Cars are complex beasts these days with many things that can go wrong. Just snags.

You'll find out how good your dealer is now. A bit of a PITA but I'm sure this will be sorted quickly and you'll be back on the road happy again.

I had a whistle like that on my Audi A2 after about 50,000 miles. After a long search it turned out to be a cracked intercooler housing.

The very night I got my scud the alarm went off and most nights after that. Took me about 4 visits inc one to my local (useless) dealer before it got fixed. So if you have to mark more than a couple of visits or messed about, do drop Skoda a letter. Who is your local dealer? Did you purchase it from them?

Its prolly something simple but if it turns out to be major then let us know!

You leave your rear wiper on intermittent? I find that after the 1st couple of wipes i don't need it unless sitting in traffic as I don't get any spray on the back window...

The rear wiper problem can be easily sorted by removing the wiper. Assuming it's the hatch, it's not needed.

Removing the wiper?

On a new car?

Not a very helpful post ........ from an administrator!! :wonder:

try this remedy first, where the pollen filter sits under the glove box give it a thump, I had a similar whistle from mine after the last service and did this and it stopped the filter may not be sitting right

turn the fan off first and if the noise stops that's where its coming from

Quick update - the car is with the dealer at the moment, for diagnostics tomorrow. The guy who came to listen to the noise said he'd never come across that before, so clearly there is an issue somewhere. Gave me a Roomster for a loaner, which made me miss my vRS even more :giggle:

I had a Roomster for a loan from my dealer, too, and it made me realise how much road noise you get in the Octy. Mind you, the Octy was better in every other respect!

Croydon?

Croydon?

No, Watford

Also had a call today - they said the noise is coming from the air con pump which will be replaced tomorrow - fingers crossed...

I'm pleased to say the car is sorted now. Apparently the whistling had nothing to do with turbo - rather it was the compressor for the air con system which was replaced under warranty. Car is as good as it ever was, I was very pleased with the 2.5 day turnaround too

Gutted? Gutted is when your wife drives your 6 week old brand new car out of the driveway and tears the back door off because she swung the wheel too quickly oh yes and she's also a c£&p driver. Pleased you've sorted it out. Enjoy a great car.

What did they say it was the first time?

Incidentally, the rear wiper is a very common octy problem that is usually to do with a crap wiper motor (noisy and it seems underpowered). Mine was doing the exact same thing as yours at around 6 months old, had it replaced under warranty and its been fine ever since (still noisy of course, but they all are!), but even out of warranty it's essentially a £30/40 part replace (inc labour) so nothing to get really worried about in the future (assuming the whistling is sorted of course!)....

My new car MFSW and cruise etc all died within 2000 miles was equally gutted, and incompetent dealers (not my supplying dealer as it was too far to go) fitted the wrong stalks! so got to go BACK IN AGAIN

not impressed, and gutted as my 58 plate was magical

What was the rear wiper fix ?
