1.2 TSI cold start rattling

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 1.2 TSI engine rattles and shakes for about 20-30 sec on a cold morning start.

After ignition the RPM increases to about 1200 and after about 30 sec it drops to about 700 RPM.

I know this is normal and I know that TSI engines show a bit more rattle on cold starts, but in mine for the first 10-15 sec I feel quite a good shake (you can feel it in the chair) and I get 2-3 bumps for a lack of better word to describe it. It's as if someone leans on your car and than pushes so the car moves a bit.

All of this stops after about 15 sec.

The car start perfectly, the engine runs perfectly, it's just that this rattle and shake seems a bit excessive to me.

Can anyone confirm this is normal?

Here's a video I shot of a cold start in my car this morning, but I'm not sure you can feel or hear the shake well in the video. Listen for the "bump bump" sounds few sec after the ignition.

Can't hear a thing! What gas do you use? Have you tried super unleaded?

I use super unleaded.

Seems to be trait of some 1.2Tsi's. Makes you wonder if Vw's direct injection petrols will have long term issues.

I have a 1.4TSI and it is very quiet, even from a cold start. I get the rev increase similar to yourself but no untoward shake rattle or roll....

I just noticed a small drop in RPM followed by immediate increase at 24 sec. mark in the video. That's when I feel the bump/shake.

Follow the RPM gauge closely and you'll see it at 24 sec. mark. It's like a very slight hiccup. What's that? Anything to be concerned?

I should mention it only happens in the morning after the car has been parked for the night. It doesn't happen at the second/third/etc ignition of the day.

Well guess what happened this morning...

Started the car, started to drive, turned the aircon on on heat, and after a few sec, EPC light goes on, Control system for exhaust light goes on, ESP light goes on and car starts to crawl as if it has 5 BHP.

Pulled over, turned off, started again, all works. For now. Although the car feels like it has less power.

On my way to the workshop but I must say I'm not happy at all! The cars has less than 1900 Km on it!

I'll see what they'll say.

So I guess the answer to my question is: No the behavior of your car is not normal... :(

Back from the workshop.

Thankfully it was a stupid fault.

One of the ignition cables (hope I'm translating it correctly) was loosely connected. That's what caused the tremble in the morning and eventually led to the symptoms I described in my previous post.

They tucked it in and all is ok.

Me happy.
