Occasional bad smell from aircon after car wash

Featured Replies

Hello,

I took the car for a wash a few days ago. After the wash I was driving with aircon on (on cold) and after about 45 min of operation, a bad smell started coming out of the aircon. The best way to describe the smell is like a dump cloth. I increased the fan of the aircon and the smell went away after about 5 min. Since than it has happened a few times, rather randomly. Sometimes the smell can come out from the moment I turn the aircon on and sometimes it can appear after a while. I should state that I don't always drive with the aircon since the weather doesn't always call for it. Anyway the smell now is milder than it was the first day after the wash.

Any ideas what it might be?

English is my 3rd language... perhaps even 4th...

It could be a damp pollen filter which is located in the passenger footwell.

I checked. It's not damp.

The air conditioning evaporator might be in need of a clean, bugs can make a damp musty smell just after the a/c is switched on, an old pollen filter - damp or dry - can cause it too. I had similar problem and changing the pollen filter cured it, the old one was quite grubby.

Thanks.

The thing is, the car is 3 weeks old...

Take it back to the dealers, could be indicative of a leak or condensation not draining away as it should do
