Tyre life

Took delivery of my 140 Combi Elegance in July and very pleased.

However, i checked my tyres yesterday and the fronts are almost touching the wear bars.

They have worn evenly but i have only done 11k and thought they would have lasted better than this.

The tyres are Continental 225/40 18 , be keen to hear others experiences.

I have a 1.8TSI with 225/45/17.

The car came on Pirelli P Zero Nero of which all 4 were replaced (as they were at the legal limit or very close to) when the car was serviced at 18k. The dealer fitted Bridgestone Potenza RE050. I questioned at the time if they were the right load index for the car - the dealer fitted 91 but the originals were 94. Anyway, the dealer assured me they were correct but I am getting the fronts changed this week as they are at their wear indicators; they have been on the car for 12 weeks and covered 5000 miles! Not very impressed!

I had Conti SC3 on a Volvo before and they were great tyres but did wear quite badly.

Justin.

I have conti sport contact2's on 18" wheels. Done 9.5k and not too far from the wear bars. On the upside the grip has been fantastic in all conditions and somehow they seem to manage to keep me going through all this white stuff!!

If it comes to a trade off between secure grip and good mileage then I would go for grip any day!!

The best tyres i have had on any of my cars were Vredesteins, they seem to give long life and excellent grip.

I'm sure they should have been 94s - check out the spec on the Skoda website. As far as I know you should never down rate a tyre for either load or speed. The lower weight rating could have contributed to rapid wear and probably invalidated your insurance... I wouldn't go back to that dealer!

My Superb was delivered with Dunlop tyres and I plan to replace them shortly with Pirelli PZero Rosso 225/45ZR. Given a big wrap wherever I look. Have copied a description here:

In the luxury and sports car segment many sophisticated electronic vehicle safety and comfort management systems are being fitted as standard. To answer this evolution and the increasingly stringent legislation limiting acoustic pollution, Pirelli has created the PZero Rosso: a comfortable and quiet ultra-high performance tyre with no trade off.

The name derives from the now legendary "PZero", which became a milestone, marking a fundamental turning point in Pirelli ultra-high performance tyre technology, and "Rosso", or red, which is synonymous with Italian motorsport. Over 200 original equipment approvals by the most prestigious car manufacturers.

Asymmetric design with wide longitudinal channels. The tread pattern is divided laterally into three distinct elements, each designed to confer a particular aspect of performance. These elements range from robust outer shoulder blocks through a semi-slick central rib with curved transversal grooves, to a more open inner shoulder.

Skoda were exporting cars to Australia with Michellins fitted but changed for some reason.

On the fronts, I managed 18K miles, the rears are still the original tyres and now on 30K miles. I did have a full 4WA alignment though at 12K miles and the alignment was found to be miles out.

Bit concerned now, my original tyres Continental Sport 2 are 92Y , can someone advise if these are correct?

Car was supplied new from UK main dealer.

I think this is correct as it looks like you have the elegance, which has 225/40/18 92Y as standard spec. I guess the lower profile is stronger as there's less to flex... I'm no expert, just going off the Skoda website, under Facts and Figures, then Standard and Optional Features, Wheel/tyre size is at the top of "Exterior", so you can flick between the S, SE and Elegance.

Per the UK brochure, 92 is the correct load index for your model.

170 Elegance Estate 2WD - just replaced all 4 original tyres at 16500 miles. Tyre company (ATS) expressed suprise that fronts and backs had given the same level of wear. Does anybody have any idea if this is standard on the estate - every time is it likely to be 4 tyres ? We have gone for Michelin Pilot Sport 3 as replacement. Reviews seem good.

I'll be putting Michelins on, my cras have been running these for over 15 years now, only deviation is when I buy a car and it has a different make.

My Escort Cosworth had the Pirelli PZero's and they were useless, the grip was poor and the tyre life was unbelievably short. Changed to Michelins and got double the life, My Toyota Avensis has the Michelins and they last between 40 - 50K miles which is comparable to what my Cavalier CDX used to get. My RSCapri also has Michelins which are over 7 years old but showing no signs of deterioration, although the car doesn't do many miles, the miles it does are usually on track and are the same tyres I used when I took the car to an endurance event at the Nurburgring in 2004!

Michelins all the time for me, good all round reliable tyre.

I'm interested in the discussion on Michelin Pilot Sport 3. I contacted Michelin (Australia) and they told me the Sport 3 did not have the correct weight rating for the Superb which is (on mine anyway94W). The Sport 3 is 92W. Is this a helluva difference???

My lower powered Superb came specified with Michelin Energy Saver 205/55/16 94V tyres which I believe are also fitted on Greenline models. I was impressed with their wet and dry grip, as well as the longevity (fronts just over 25,000 miles and rear almost double).

For some bizarre reason, the leasing company would not sanction the same tyres when replacements were due, however, they did agree to the marginally more expensive Michelin Primacy tyres in the same rating/load index. These are a bit grippier than the Energy's and are still going strong. The car is currently at 64,000 miles, during which time, I am still on the second set of four Primacy tyres!

Michelin here in Ireland have the Pilot Sports PS 3 XL, listed as a 94 loading for 225/45/17, so I would suspect that they would also be available on 16" and 18" if needed, but the loading is definitely 94.
