AFS Lighting - Some random info from the mfr

Recommended Posts

The xenons with AFS2 are a popular spec on the Octavia. Here's some random info I found interesting.

The units are made only by Hella and are supplied to Skoda, not the VAG group in general. They are designed to be simple to build into a car for the assembler (Skoda), everything is self contained. For example, external level sensors fitted to the suspension with previous generations of AFS and xenons in general (adjusted the beam height depending on the angle of the car, I.e. Turned beam downwards if the rear of the car was heavily loaded), have been replaced with digital gyroscopes contained in the headlight assembly.

AFS2 depends on canbus connectivity for at least road speed and steering angle inputs. It uses this data for various adjustments. In urban mode which is active between 15 and 50km/h, AFS2 widens the beam, lighting up the edge of the road.

Between 50 and 90kmh, the lighting operates in a normal dipped beam mode. From 90km/h on, a motorway function extends the beam to illuminate more of the road ahead.

AFS2 features an integral cornering light function as well as a rain function which reduces road glare for oncoming drivers in wet conditions.
