XDS now available with 4x4?

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just been reading the new brochure and the technical glossary has a greatly added number of terms including this:

• XDS: XDS is an advanced electronic differential lock linked to a sophisticated Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) system, designed to maximise traction and improve responses. In moments of fast cornering it provides pressure on the inside wheel to prevent wheel spinning. The result is better traction and a reduction of any tendency to under steer. The driver will experience a more agile, precise and calming driving performance with better traction out of bends.

So my question is this:

Do the pre 4/1/11 4x4's have this, or is this a new thing that we don't have?

It sounds like it makes the 4x4 handle better in the bends (which I always thought they did anyway)

I think they just make up these names to impress people, that or confuse them. The Yeti corners brilliantly well already so unless you are driving it Top Gear style I wonder how many of us will notice a difference. However, if it makes it an even safer car then it can not be a bad thing.

As far as I know, the only cars to have this in the Skoda range is the Fabia vrs, and the Octavia vrs. I have driven the Fabia vrs on track, and the XDS really does what it says it does when it comes to reducing understeer. Quite impressive.

Can't really comment on the Yeti having XDS or not but seeing as it is just software there is no reason why it can't have it.

But it certainly does work, I haven't spent enough time in a Fabia vRS to especially notice it but going from an Octavia vRS without it and an Octavia vRS with XDS it certainly does make a big difference, it just gently brakes the inside wheel to help 'yaw' the car into the bend. Works well, only downside is that when you do loose traction mid corner due to a loose surface, oil/coolant on road, etc you're traveling just that little bit faster than you may expect!

I'll try and find out from Skoda today if they have XDS or not.

I don't think its anything new.

The only place it appears is in the glossary and it seems to explain what has been installed in the cars from launch.

I think that if it were a change to the spec, then more would be made of it in the same way that specific features of the Greenline are highlighted in the text (I used to catch the 410 'Greenline' bus to get to school - I hope the Skoda version is a bit more comfortable)

Just spoken to Skoda and yes the new Yetis fitted with ESP do come with XDS but as Trevorminor says it isn't new. Previous Yetis will have had EDL which is a more basic system than XDS.

So if it is something new and only a software thing, can my MY11 Yeti be upgraded to the latest software with XDS?

Any idea which 'build week' this will apply to?

04/01/2011?

But I hope long before that and that it includes mineemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Hi James - were you able to discover from which build week the XDS was introduced to Yeti builds?

Anybody able to update on this please?

Done some more investigating and I can confirm 100% the Yeti does NOT have XDS.

The only models in the Skoda range currently to have XDS are the vRS models in the Fabia and Octavia.

My bad! At least there is clarifacation on the matter now.

Thanks James. This makes sense as, what what I have learned, the XDS system is effectively an electronic diff lock/limited slip arrangement.

FWD cars like the Octavia vRS and Fabia vRS really rather need this (I know from experience of my Octavia vRS TDI); but us Yeti drivers have got 4WD instead. ;):giggle:

Yes it makes a big difference to how the cars accelerate out of corners, makes them smoother and more stable, and ultimately faster and as you rightly say all wheel drive cars don't really need this.

The only reason XDS is in the brochure was because they wanted to generalise all the features and technologies across the Skoda range, but they are going to amend the Yeti brochure and remove the mention of XDS when they next reprint them.

Thanks James

  • 2 years later...

Sorry to bump up this old thread, but I have an early 2012 Yeti 4x4 140bhp. I was playing around with the VCDS, and I saw an option for XDS, so I ticked it and activated it. It also said coding accepted. I then went into the ABS controller, and there was an option to set XDS to average, low or strong. I've set it on strong. Haven't gotten to drive the car after that, but no fault codes or anything showed up. So does the Yeti really have XDS or not?

So I drove the car a bit today, and there is certainly a difference. Turn in is much sharper, and the car holds its line much better too. Also lane changes at higher speeds seem to happen much faster. And the brake assist on high has made the brakes a lot less spongy, and it feels more accurate now.

So it seems like XDS is actually available on the Yeti.

So I better get my '60' reg Yeti hooked up to VCDS to see if it is equipped with XDS; I somehow suspect not.
