Hunter 4 wheel alignment done......well worth it

Featured Replies

Having had new tops mounts (front and rear) ARB bushes, R32 ARB, Wishbone bushes and also new front springs. I decided to go get a 4 wheel alignment at Revolution in Gateshead as the car was pulling to the Left a bit but while the wheel was centred and when driving straight, the wheel would point Right slightly.

After 2 hours of messing about with what looked like an awesome set up at Revolution, the car is transformed as my suspension was well out of kilter. Now it doesn't pull to the left and the wheel is centred.

The drivers side wheel used to rub on full lock but is sorted now. Cornering feels well planted and precise :)

It still follows the road camber a bit but with the KW V3s I've heard that's normal?

Here is the read out showing before and after

Rear toe isn't adjustable apparently but they didn't think that figure being out was an issue.

Its a good system....I had my old 306 GTi-6 setup on a hunter unit locally after i replaced and upgraded the whole suspension.

Definetly top marks, drove lovely after i had it done!

isn't the only thing that is adjustable the front tow? everything else is fixed?

You can adjust the front toe, but nothing else. You *can* adjust the rear beam position too, allowing you to change the thrust angle, but it's a major pita to do, and means removing the rear beam and moving the mounting brackets. Not cool! They wouldn't have moved formt he factory anyways.

Just adjusting the tracking can make a big difference to how a car drives especially at speed

So what, if anything, does a 4 wheel alignment give to a 2wd car compared to a simple and much cheaper tracking job?

The readings for the rear of the car do not seem much different.

I always thought the hunter alignment was only necessary/beneficial for a 4wd car?

From what I can tell, doing a full 4 wheel alignment is good, even though the rear is not adjustable.

If the thrust angle at the rear is wrong, you can compensate for it at the front, something you can't do with a 2 wheel tracking jobbie.

It tells you something is wrong with your rear alignment, which you can't change without a lot of fuss :giggle: Better not to know if you can't actually change it to what it should be.

Most production cars don't have adjustable rear suspension geometry. I know the Mk1 MR2 allows you to adjust all sorts.

A lot of Pug/Citroen rear suspension is very simple (torsion beam), and if your rear alignment is out, well then, you have a knackered beam. I had to rebuild my 205 GTi one as the bearings had rusted away!

Its better to do a 4 wheel alignment because it tells you if anything wrong, ie if anythings bent or damage, some cars alot more adjustable than others, my old s40 you could adjust the rear camber and toe and same at front.

Sometimes you can adjust settings to affect how a car drives, if you set a car for instance to tow out on tracking at front it will tram line more but will handle better at high speed,

Thanks all. So it would seem if you have some serious concerns about your car's rear alignment then a hunter 4wd alignment would be worth doing, but otherwise the 2wd aligment should typically suffice.

You don't have to have any concerns as such, adjusting the fronts to compensate for the rears should result in a better setup than just setting the fronts to what should be factory spec.

I take it that the rear setup can be slightly different from one car to the other even though they are within manufacturers specs, without any major faults, and this is like fine tuning compared to having your tracking done.

A four wheel adjustment is a waste of time unless you car has track adjusters or youve put adjustable top mounts on the rear!

A four wheel track is dont on such cars that have this rear adjustmenat, you get the rears straight and then adjust the fronts off of the rear, with a car like the Octy thats got no rear adjustment its just a normal track!
