Aerial in front windscreen on MY11 Fabia SE... why?

Featured Replies

I'm slowly convincing the missus to buy a new Fabia while the VAT offer is on. We've just had a brand new (only 5 miles on the clock) Fabia SE for a couple of hours and I've noticed an electrical element in the windscreen, running vertically downwards from the mirror, to about half way down the window.

Looking in the latest brochure online, it states that the Fabia now has a windscreen mounted aerial for FM2... what's that about then :S The car still had the standard screw-on aerial on the roof, so I can't see the reason for another just for FM2... I mean, is FM2 actually different to FM, or is it the new name for MW or something...?

Seems a bit odd to me, and I wonder what effect the heated windscreen would have on it's performance...?

I don't know why two aerials unless reception of external one is bad if transmitter ahead of car due to signal reflections off the body.

As to effect of heated screen I did not know Fabia had a heated screen either as standard or an option.

Ah, sorry, I didn't realise the heated windscreen wasn't an option.... I've been spending too long in the Superb forum :giggle:

As for reception of the external one, surely this would apply to all cars which have a roof mounted aerial? It just seems a bit of an odd thing to add. They could have just put the whole aerial in the front windscreen (or the back one for that matter).

could it be to do with the compass function? as for triangulation the GPS or compass requires 2 or more points of reference?

just a thought as my vRS tells me what direction im going

Sat nav ?

No, mine has the roof ariel and the screen one, yet doesn't have Sat-Nav or any extras that could need it.

I believe it's a 2nd ariel for the radio, just like the Yeti has.

That has the same roof one, but another one too.

Thanks for the replies folks, I'm aware that it's for FM2, I just don't understand the need for it. Many cars have roof mounted aerials, yet the Fabia (and the Yeti) need something extra... very strange if you ask me! I'd ask my dealer, but he's already told me that I know more than him...!

If your on MW it shifts to FM for traffic reports by itself then goes back to MW, it could be something to do with this facility.
