What to spec on the superb estate?

Featured Replies

Hi all, this year I am getting a spanking new Superb Estate, however I want to know from those that have bought the superb the best things to equip and the things to avoid. My own basic specs on equipment details are as follows:

2.0TDI 170BHP Elegance

Candy White or Aqua blue paint

18" Themisto Allloys(unfortunately not standard in ireland)

KESSY

Sunset glass

Wind defelctors front only

10 Speaker Sound system

MDI

Sports body pack

Anymore help on the extras i could get would be much appreciated. Could someone also tell me as I saw it on the german skoda website car configuator that you can get a extra that drops the car by roughly 15mm, just wondering is such a extra available here in ireland/uk

Cheers

From what I've read the Sunset glass in not very dark at all, so dont go for it unless you see it first.

I wanted the MDI badly for USB sticks, well I do exactly the same off SDHC cards now, that and the amount you can shove on the HDD I now consider the MDI a ripp-off for a piece of cable loom.

Get the dipping mirror, the manual one dips too much.

Not read many glowing reports about the audio upgrade kit, my car don't have it and I will admit it does sound a bit thin, and lacks decent bass. The upgraded kit would also suffer for the same reason, the car needs a proper subwoofer with either audio installation.

Not got KESSY, but that does look useful.

Don't know what a sports body pack is, not got that in the UK?

I have an Aqua Blue Estate 1.8T Elegance with KESSY, Sound upgrade, Sunset Glass (and some other options...)

KESSY:

I think its worth it. Its nice to lock, unlock and start the car without the need to take the key out of the pocket. I also have the electric boot and it really nice when you have your hands full, just one little press on the boot button and it opens.

Sunset Glas:

Looks nice. I think it looks very dark from the outside, but not so dark from the inside.

Sound Upgrade:

Worth it. It sounds much better then the standard sound system. Compared to the upgraded system in my old Audi A4 (2009, not B&O), this sounds better. I think the bass is more than enough with this system.

I think that the Aqua blue looks really nice...

I added a Heated Screen and Washer's to my order, along with MDI, Park Assist, Matts, Spare wheel and Sunset Glass.

I would have preferred the glass to be darker, but it does look good. Matts and Spare wheel are a no-brainer in my eyes.

There's an AutoDimming mirror in my Mam's car, and to be honest, i dont rate it (It's a bit like Auto-Lights, great, but whats wrong with a switch?)

The Park Assist, well, i wanted front sensors, (£300) so chose park assist at £500. I thought the £200 was Ok for a toy - it does work tho, but, i dont use it too often.

The heated washers are not as effective as i had hope, as the rest of the system just freezes up instead - the screen on the other hand is great! :)

MDI, well i use it with my iPad rather than iPod or Mem Stick, but i did have to acquire a very expensive extension cable, to get enough distance out of the so-called JumboBox.

Sport Body Pack - really? Why? It looks great as it is!

Wind Deflectors - do you smoke?

KESSY was not an option when i ordered mine, and to be honest, Key's have worked for years, but, i can see the appeal.

Al.

Sunset glass is ok, I have had it on my last three Superbs not advertised in brochures as visual security aid hence not over dark, just like dark sunglasses. I also have the f\actory fitted sunblinds in the rear doors. These are well worth the money and look so much better than dealer fitted ones. Heated washers are a complete waste of money, use correct dilution of fluid the prevent freezing max strength chill factor will freeze headlamp washers otherwise.

I also wanted front sensors and decided to add the Park Assist not used very often mainly to demonstrate, never had any problem with kerbing even with badly parked vehicles ( well not yet ).

Electric Tailgate, works well very handy when shopping, beware use with strong wind on back. Upgraded sound system check this out in the forum many reports. Extra carpets get from outside source.

Recomend:

Heated Screen,

Sunset Glass,

Rear door blinds, ( Factory Fit ),

Front sensors, (+ possible Park Assist ),

Electric Tailgate,

Full size Spare wheel, ( Dealer order Jack Kit ), the vehicle will come with the tyre sealer and a nice little compressor make sure you are given it, it is paid for in the car.

I bought an Aqua Blue 170 Elegance with the following options:

1) Alloy wheels - 7.5J x 18 'Luna' - Much better than the 'Themitso's' IMO, both in looks and for cleaning

2) Auto dimming rear view mirror - Pity the door mirrors do not dim as some suggest, but a great addition anyway

3) Electrically operated boot with automatic parcel shelf retract - Absolutely love this! I am in the boot at least twice a day, so think it is 'worth' the £500!

4) Floor mats - Don't bother with the factory mats, they are only just better than the factory carpets and they are very poor quality, and at £55 pretty poor value, buy some proper quality mats.

5) Heated washer nozzles - Great, not had them freeze up, this is also partially due to the correct solution of screenwash fitted at the factory.

6) Heated windscreen - Despite my initial reservations about the 'wires' being too visible, I am REALLY glad i specced it!!

7) Park Assist - Good toy, it WILL however curb your alloys, I used mine for the 2nd time at the weekend, whilst the car in front and behind were both parked 4 - 6" away from the curb, Park Assist put my Superb INTO the curb! - fortunately I am on 16" 55 profile winter tyres at the moment, so only the tyres touched the curb, this would not be so forgiving on the OE 40 profile tyres fitted to the OE 18"'s. The front parking sensors (the ones on the side) are well worth it though.

8) Spare wheel space saver - Wouldn't have a car without a spare wheel/tyre

9) Sunset glass from B-pillar back - No it's not very dark, but it is a nice subtle shade, personally I hate 'limo tint' or 'drug dealer windows' as SWMBO calls it, so the sunset it just about right for me.

10) Variable boot floor - If you are going to be carrying large items in the boot then this is a must have IMO, why build an estate with a 4-5" lip on the boot edge??

11) Wood decor - IMO adds a touch of class the interior, aluminium dash inserts are fine on a sports car, but I think they look out of place in the Superb.

12) Mudflaps - Fitted myself and despite their size they seem to do a pretty good job

Was there anything I missed off that I wished I had ordered? don't think so :

DSG - Nope, drove one and was not overly impressed with it, it was not smooth enough engaging 1st and reverse and seemed hesitant pulling away at times, if it had been a free option then I may have considered it, but a £1,300 (IIRC) option for something that I can do equally as well if not better - no thanks, IF you do a lot of city driving then I can see some of the benefits.... but I don't.

MDI - The SD card and HDD is more than good enough for me

Panoramic sunroof - Not for me thanks. (that is when you can order one)

Rear side airbags - I rarely have anyone in the rear, so didn't bother with it.

Heated rear seats - Same reason as above.

Rear side window sunscreens - This is worth considering if you don't have the sunset glass, BUT make sure you get them factory fitted as the ones in the rear doors are on a roller that retract into the door panels

Towbar prep - Don't tow with the car so unnecessary.

3 spoke steering wheel - I actually like the 4 spoke one, so couldn't justify the £355 for the 3 spoke version.

Upgraded sound system - I find the std system more than good enough.

6CD changer - A pointless addition with the HDD and SD slot the Columbus comes with IMO.

KESSY - I have driven a couple of Passat's with their version of it and found it unnecessary.

Rear spoiler - I seriously considered this, but the OE tailgate has almost a spoiler built in as std, so didn't bother, I am not sorry I didn't order it TBH.

Bootliner - This is something I will be getting when I find a suitable one for transporting my wet SCUBA gear, I don't like the idea of the rigid plastic liner as I don't want everything sliding around in it, I also want a liner that will cover the two aluminium rails for the 'tether system' as salt water and aluminium do not together very well!

HTH you to make your mind up what option to choose.

Many thanks guy's I am considering the DSG box, but I too have heard things about the 1st gear issue, but if i got the DSG box, does that limit the amount of torque going thru the front wheels compared to a standard gearbox? or is it just a myth as I do want to get the engine chipped to about 200 brake. I asked about the sports pack option as from seeing a superb estate in the flesh even with 18" alloys seems to much of a gap between the wheel and the wheel arch, well for me anyway. I also will be getting the styling kit for the outside. Rear door roller blind's was something I hadn' t considered but I might spec this extra now. Also interior colour on the leather, all black/ or the cream????

You should not take out as much torque on a DSG as you can on a manual. I think MTM does 380nm on DSG compared to 390 on manual. You will however be able to get over 200 brake with a DSG regardless.

2) Auto dimming rear view mirror - Pity the door mirrors do not dim as some suggest, but a great addition anyway

Both my door mirrors dim on my Superb (MY2011). It comes with the Elegance package here in Sweden. Maybe its not standard in the UK? If it is, you should contact your dealer...

Hi Just my input

standard speaker system is pants ! there is just no bass at all and wish i had optioned that but then that wouldve been something else for my fleet manager to miss off the order (read my other post if you need more info)

the columbus sat nav is the best i have ever had and the phone intergration works fantastically it even pauses the dvd you are watching if some one rings you and the voice activation is spot on ! i have nearly 1500 entries

front and rear sensors is a big bonus although i dont have front sensors due to above, but have had them on my last 3 cars

elec boot, not sure on that now as origionally order that option but didnt get but wouldve liked

spare wheel yes

mats yes

tints i didnt go for sunset instead had it limo black on the side (b pillar back) and 75% on rear screen with hind site probably wouldve gone for 75% all round

I intend getting some after market wind deflectors (yes i smoke)

KESSY dont see the point but have never had it so is that valid

mud flaps as soon as i get the funds together and time to sort as the road dirt is a real pain

the other thing i will be sorting soon is some sort of bumper protector on the top and the first 1-2" of the bumper as iam constantly loading and un loading car and its only a matter of time till i take the paint off

with hindsite agiain i think i wouldve gone for the Ivory leather with black floor

if you go for a dark tint on the windows i think that the auto dim rear mirror may be to dark

but if i had a masive budget then i would spec every option going and still be way under the price of a similar spec Passat

just my ten penith worth

Andy

Re privacy glass, does anyone know what the percentage of allowed light through is? My Dad's considering an Superb wagon and I'm trying to compare it with, say a list of tint levels done the traditional way...

Cheers,

Steve

Legally, you CAN NOT Tint the front screen, or front side windows any more than what comes from factory.

The rest (B Pilar back) You can do what you wish.

With a comparison to the Factory look, i would have thought it to be a "Medium Smoke" iro 30%

Hi Bandit 1988,

As you've asked re. Interior, having a beige/cream interior...

1. with regard to carpet.... when its clean it looks great (even though I agree quality is not fantastic) but to keep the B****** carpets clean in a B****! Can I suggest Ivory leather but with black carpets! I wih I had! Or at the very least get black mats! But I also agree with Gizmo68 better of not buying from Skoda... not very good quality.

2. Heated windscreen.... fabulous! Well worth it!

3. Electric boot, I had one on my previous car & wanted it again, I think its great... Missus didn't want it though at £500 its steep (as an extra in Germany its "only" about 360euro's)!

4. Rear window blinds I also wish we had them now for the kids. Not sure about sunset glass, probably better to save your money.

5. DSG - I didn't think test drive car was very good... the down changes were lurchy. But it learns & is raved about everywhere. Personnally I'm very happy with 6speed manual - very smooth & slick changes, very smooth engine 170CR TDI. Power delivery no shove just silky smooth from a little over 1500rpm onwards!!!

6. Becareful re. chipping - won't this invalidate your new car warranty?

7. Colour Amethyst - doesn't look dirty!

8. KESSY - can't see the point - standard keys being coded to drivers seat position is great!

9. MDI - I think its expensive - SD card is good enough - but I'm not really a music buff.

10. Spare wheel - I think this is a must! £65 for a near full size spare - why risk being stuck with just the foam... & potentially wreck tyre when it could be repaired!!!

11. I think people in the back would appreciate heated seats, I think the extra was reasonably priced.

12. LUGGAGE / DOG Guard....if carrying a full load & seats are up in the back, ie. for holidays I don't feel safe without a luggage guard - dealer fit option £115, not very big but I feel its a must to stop stuff potentially flying through passanger compartment!

hope it helps.... good luck

Stef

I don't understand why everyone complains about the DSG. The one I have is terrific and the others I have driven are the same. No hesitation, no clunks nothing except seamless gear changes. We do a lot of towing and it is the best thing since sliced bread was invented. Maybe it is driving technique and because I have driven a thousand autos over the years it just comes naturally to me. you can make it snatchy off the line if you just get off the brake and jump on the throttle, the technique is to take your foot off the brake, let the clutch take up and then accelerate which takea a half a second longer. if you don't allow the clutch to take up first it will be an unpleasant take off.

IF the 4x4 Superb was available with the DSG box, then that's what i would of ordered, but, i know that 4x4 is more beneficial to me, than the DSG.

Al.

For me the 4x4 option swung it for me. Just brilliant.

MDI yes again it is great with the iPod touch

Mud flaps essential and cheap add-on

Electric tailgate. I don't think I could now live without it

Carpets not great. I have taken them out until the weather improves. I've put in some 99p Tesco rubber mats

Heated washer nozzles yes and cheap, but water reservoir does freeze up in really cold conditions

Full size spare wheel again yes and a cheap option

Black leather yes, ivory is a mare to keep clean and shows up every blemish

Themistos for me. Just don't like the look of the Lunas

Sound upgrade well worth the extra dosh, but not up to Bose quality

I may have gone for DSG if available, however the manual box is a cracker

Rubber boot liner is good quality and hard wearing

KESSY did not float my boat TBH, the memory keys are fine with me

Rear spoiler looks like what it is, an add-on

Lifetime AutoGlym, don't bother waste of a lot of money.

Enjoy your car when it arrives. Nobody on the forum has a bad word for the Superb. I keep saying it it's Audi quality for Mondeo money

Phil

I don't get this re the standard sound system being "pants". But admit I haven't heard the upgrade.

I'm a musician (bass player) so I like to have decent sound in my cars, although I don't feel the need to deafen everyone in the street!!

At first I thought the system was not too good, but after some radical tone settings I reckon it's as good as I've had. Clear, crisp, with a punchy bass. I drive other members of the band around and they, too, think it's very good for a standard system. Really happy with it and certainly don't feel that I would need to upgrade.

As for the settings - they are strange!! (And probably won't suit everyone (anyone??!!)) (Perhaps my ears are shot after playing in bands for 40 odd years  )

Treble - there's far too much, so that's virtually off.

Mid - I don't like a lot of mid (my own bass set-up is without a lot of mid), so that's at around 25%.

Bass - (well I am a bass player) it has to be full but punchy, that's set at 75%.

With jazz on the HDD and Rock/Pop on a 32gb SD card, I think it's a great system.

Oops - forgot. The one thing I should have ordered but didn't is the heated screen. Regret it. Had it on a couple of Alhambras a while back and slapping myself for the omission.

Edited by P-G

I like your post P-G, I'm a bass player too, and yes I very much agree with you, the standard system is OK, and I agree the top end needs backing off, I have bass +50% / mids -30% / treb -25%

I also DJ so listen to a lot of Trance & House etc. and I'm going to live with the system as it is until I get around to putting my sub in the back that was removed from previous car.

The car is so quiet it does not need a lot of volume, but whilst the bass is OK, I'm missing the sub that's sitting on my landing waiting for a nice warm weekend to be tested then fitted if it works.

Another note worth mentioning is that the upgraded system may well go a wee bit louder and have an extra pair of mids "that I don't need either", It will not produce lower bass.

Same size speakers in the same doors, so I'm afraid it aint going to happen. Louder, clearer, cleaner maybe, but not lower.

Save the money put it towards a powered sub, get the tone controls sorted and it will sound pretty good with a much improved bass extension. "If you need it of course" Bass does deminish at motorway speeds.

Tankdave (bass lover)

PS, I've changed what I have my tone settings at the top of this post, I just been out in the car and double checked them.

Edited by Tankdave

Well I am no expert !

but the sound in the CRV i had has spot on this is "poor" as its set now

BUT i will try the settings that you use and see if it improves

will let you know

cheers

Andy

ps otherwise as every day goes by i get more impressed escecialy when some one said to me the other day " you must be doing well getting one of those new 5 series estates !"

never replied

lol

+ 1

My DSG works really nice! Its more of a learning period to handle the throttle right... Only quirky was when it was really cold, down to minus 30 degrees. THEN it was a bit less superb. It needs more revs to engage the first/rear gear. Since this is a experience one time a year or less I can live with it.

Have a mess with tone controls, it makes a big difference.

My car was a pre-registered one WITHOUT the upgrade, but after tinkering I'm able to say it;s way better that I was expecting, not in same league as my previous cars custom install job, but it's sufficient for now and that is saying something if you know what I'm like with my sound systems.

Love the 5 series comment, made me chukle

Just to make it clear, I was talking sliders full left to be 0% and full right to be 100%. I think my settings are a bit more severe than Tankdaves!!

Just driven back from rehearsal,Yellowjackets on the system and a big smile on my face. It sounded so good!!

Sorry, this has drifted from the thread so will call it a day at that!!

well i can get my lowered suspension for €280 which is a bargain, all tolled with my options 42500€ a bargain :)

2) Auto dimming rear view mirror - Pity the door mirrors do not dim as some suggest, but a great addition anyway

My door mirrors do dim. But I have different problem with them. They should close when one hold finger on closing KESSY sensor for two seconds, but mine don't. :-( They do close however when closing button on remote is pressed for two seconds or inside knob is turned into mirror closing position.

Don't let the Park Assist to finish its job. Instead just before the curb (or similar obstacle) is hit, stop the car and put it in the 1. gear. Park Assist will turn your wheel in opposite direction, then drive a bit forward. It will then request reverse gear, when you change into reverse, wheel will turn again and car will be parked further away from the curb.
