My Octavia VRS Estate Race Blue - HDR Content

Featured Replies

Hi,

I debadged the OCTAVIA logo and added a couple of Pistonheads smilies yesterday after giving it a thorough clean so I thought I'd get some photos and try out my new tripod! Unfortunately driving through the forest meant it got a bit dirty on the way to the location, but it's not too bad.

Firstly, here are some photos I used to try out my HDR trial software on. I'll get on and process the non HDR photos later as I know HDR isn't to everyone's taste. (please excuse the trial software watermarks)

Some good shots there

Did you do the HDR editing from a single shot RAW? or use multiple shots?

P.S - I like the Piston smiles sticker :p

Multiple shots. I took LOADS!!!! All RAW.

Some nice ones there Danski.

I'm a bit confused though - normally you'd use either multiple jpegs or one RAW to get the HDR output but you seem to be saying multiple RAW's?

Multiple RAW images work far better than just one because you have three different levels of exposure, rather than one image that's post-processed to three extremes. If you take a sky shot in RAW, for example, and the sunlight blows out the clouds, no amount of tweaking is going to get them back. The single shot method is a bit of a bodge for adding some pep to an image you didn't plan to render as HDR.

Thanks. Yeah, multiple RAW files means I have a bit more control. They were only quick processes. Might spend a bit more time on them tonight.

Multiple RAW is the best method, Followed by single RAW that has the exposure altered to produce multiple images before HDR processing, Then multiple jpg's.

Cheers

Dave.

I've found that multiple high quality JEGS are better than one RAW as you're getting genuine exposures at whatever separation you choose rather than recreating the exposures. In situations with extreme lighting it can makes all the difference.

I like those. Not too over processed, as often ends up when people go a bit mad with HDR :)

I must admit it's something I've never got round to experimenting with, and I should really - just for curiosity's sake

Don't really like the *front* PH decal though, I have to say Dan - think it's maybe the placement location? Not sure where else I'd place one on the front though...

I'm wasn't 100% sure on it once I'd stuck it on but it's grown on me!

Some really good HDR shots there - I experimented with HDR but couldn't get on with it -

I still don't know how to post images here so the links will have to do

I think I might be able to do something with the car and HDR though - you've given me some food for thought here.

What software did you use?

Oh, I love those photos! I think they're great.

I used the Photomatix plugin for Aperture 3 on the Mac. I think you can get Photomatix as a standalone program if you don't have Aperture or a Mac though.
