SM vs Roomster

Featured Replies

Looks nice, TR. Enjoy

I, too considered the Yeti, but decided on a Roomy for the same reasons as you. I also preferred the Roomy's "underfloor" storage of the spare wheel.

I think the Roomy looks good with sunset glass and black roof rails and I love the fact that it is different from the crowd.

I love the Yeti, it is an excellent car. I just love the Roomy more.

Thanks!

Actually the rear windows are a lot darker than the Sunset.

Here's a pic of our SM when the dealer forgot to fit the tinting foil to the doors which are only stock Sunset tint while the rear window has tinting foil - quite some difference over the Sunset

The rear windows on the Roomster are tinted with a foil that lets only 15% light (rear door window) and 5% (rear body window))

We bought a Roomster 3 in 2007 to replace a Honda FRV. It was a great car but owing to a job change I was offered a top spec Passat 170 Tdi or a cash allowance. I was seduced by the Passat and sold the Roomster back to a dealer, at a loss. A decision we came to regret.

The Roomster was a great car for a family of three. After a 120, a Favorit, two Felicias, two Fabia Estates...we realised that Skodas met our needs and we rather liked doing quirky!

I handed back the Passat last summer and we bought a Yeti. The Roomster was still on the shortlst with the Yeti and a 4x4 Superb.

I also preferred the Roomy's "underfloor" storage of the spare wheel.

Presumably, us 2wd Yeti owners are stuck with the spare wheel taking boot space because they wanted the same shell for the 2wd and 4wd versions, but we don't have any drivetrain under the back?

... well it affects us 4x4 Yeti owners too, you know. :giggle:

I have to say that the spare wheel taking up boot space is about the only downside I can think of as a Yeti owner.

Roomster is a good car, my wife has a 1.6 Tip Scout, but I do find the front seat cabin size notably smaller (less shoulder room than Yeti).

Good points for both vehicles in all honesty.:thumbup:

I know that one day I will have to replace my 10yr old Fabia, and was nearly tempted a couple of winters back when the Yeti first came out! Looks really good!!! Trouble is I have for the past couple of years had a spare full set of winter tyres on my Fabia over winter....and I've had FUN overtaking 4x4s!! So considering a small FWD Fabia can cope with the past 2 bad (good for me) winters I decided against 4x4 on a Yeti as I don't need it, trouble is that the shell and supension is made for 4x4 so you are still carrying extra weight!! Last summer car was in the dealership for new cambelt and I got a Roomster as a courtesy car!!! Impressed!! (I had known about them since they first came out but "dismissed" it!) So got tapemeasure out and did some measurements, and on the Yeti in the dealership and came to the following conclusions! The Roomster is lighter for same spec, shorter on outside then Yeti but longer from back of drivers seat (my position) to inside of back hatch, has more volume on inside with the rear seats removed but with the spare wheel (Skoda catalogue),& better fuel economy. Yeti I think is only worth buying in the 4x4 spec! And when Skoda launched the facelift MKII Roomster Scout.....best looking Roomster to date I think!......I've already got a file of "tweeks", specs, etc for my eventual Fabia replacement..and best of all is that it uses the same suspension, brakes etc as Fabia, which I know quite well B)

67mpg at some points yesterday during normal-ish queuing A-road driving, with two kids and their mountain bikes (with front wheels on) in the space of the removed middle seat (which I put in the passenger footwell) !

Bags of space and quite reasonable, if a bit rolly-poly on corners.

But, IMHO, it's not a looker

So, the only advantage that the Roomster has over the Yeti is more or less the 6 cm more space in the back seat
this is not the only advantage and internal and external dimensions do not tell the whole story. Before ordering the Roomster I took 3 child seats to almost every car dealer I could find, the one thing I can state categorically is the spec sheet measurements bear no relation to how you can use the space.

In a Roomster you can slide the outer 2 rear seats so they sit in front or behind the middle seat, in a Yeti you cannot. The rear seat belt anchor points in the Yeti are different to a Roomster which means you are more restricted for placing child booster seats in the Yeti. These features alone as well as the others mentioned make the Yeti a more usable family car for anyone having to transport more than one child under 12 on a regular basis.

It really does depend how you need to use your car, and that is why (as has been mentioned) every manufacturer gives us a range of options, for me the only car in the Skoda range that met my requirements was the Roomster :)

I wish you could tell that to Honda - it's either a Jazz or a CRV - from one extreme to the other with nothing Roomster/Yeti sized in between. There are those who suggest they've taken their eye off the ball, or some such similar observation.
