Ride height

I met up with 900000 and Octygone today at the South East Rolling Road day - another story.

Johanns moster looked much lower than mine.

We measured the ride height. Mine was 30mm taller.....on 215/60 R16 wheels

Elsie: 787mm to top of rear wheel arch. 215/60 R16 wheels

900000 : 757mm to top of rear wheel arch. 205/55 R16 wheels

Octygone: 782mm to top of rear wheel arch 225/50 R17 wheels.

Interesting.....

Indeed sounds more than you would expect :wonder:

What loadings did you have down the back i.e. kit in the boot, fuel, roof bars, spare wheels and velux roof systems etc.

TP

I had a full tank of fuel and the spare wheel. Our two cars are similar spec, but I have the Columbus & sound system

I don't think Johann had anything extra in the boot. not sure about his fuel load. He does have that hole cut in his roof though...Oh yes, he does have the towbar fitted, but the removable part wasn't not on board.

Just measured mine, with full tank of fuel and spare wheel...... 800mm

Thats on standard 17 rims

So quite a wide range.

Andy

Was that the rear wheel arch?

We measured all 3 on the same side on the same surface.

Could it be because Johann's car is fitted with 205/55/16 tires. I suppose that is the winter tyres.

Tyre wear also constitute some height differences, 7mm new and 2mm legal limit.

Yes....

Our tyres have done about the same mileage.

They might have done, but you would be amazed at the differences between tyres, even when they are stated to be the same size!

Johann hasn't had a helicopter parked on his roof, has he????

just measured mine.

797mm with 3/4 tank of fuel, no spare and empty boot on 225/50/17's

Interesting, isn't it. Just measured mine, on the offside, with full tank, 225/50/R17 Conti winter tyres with little wear - and, in the gloom, it's perhaps one mil short of 800 - about 799. But my drive slopes a bit - it's 'nose down the slope' at present - I wonder if that makes any difference? Oh, and I have a spare -

It might possibly affect it.

All three measured today were on the same slope/ level ground and taken in the same place on same side of vehicle to try and get some sort of comparison.

And as Lanigraham mentioned we were all on different makes of tyre and different sizes and not all tyres the same size are....

The reason I posted was the comparison between the different wheel sizes.

As we all know the 215/60 R16 as fitted to my car are slightly larger dia than the standard 225/50 R17's and much bigger than the 205/55 R16's.

So a 205/55 R16 equipped SM ground clearance is 150mm -30mm lower than standard and with the 215/60 R26's is 185mm, based on our measurements today.

oh yes. My tyres are running at Skodas +0.2 bar over summer pressures, last checked 3 weeks ago. ( time to check again).

900000 has about 1000 miles more on the clock than me.

Food for thought.

Apologies for only posting now. Was busy yesterday in the new house.

Here are the pictures - apologies for not being exactly in focus. White car is obviously Elsie, Steel Grey is mine and Aqua blue is Octygone.

White car? What white car? All I can see is a steel grey one, a aqua blue one and a dirty one emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Mike

I think I have seen pictures of a far, far dirtier Elsie to be honest!

To make the comparison fair mine had half a tank of fuel and I don't have a spare and no junk in the back either unless you count a safety jacket ........oh and no helicopters

Ah yes mine had three quarters of a tank of fuel, a spare wheel, a VAG compressor (kindly supplied by Merlinman!), some engine oil, some washer fluid, a three point power inverter, two rubber floor mats and about 6 "Bags for life" in the back. And as noted before the 18kg towbar swan neck was at home. So mine too was pretty empty.

Perhaps those online wheel circumference calculators are all wrong?!

Perhaps the long wait was Top Gear practicing landing helicopters on your car emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Arkaig posted a link to a different website for tyre calculation in this thread:

So my standard alloys are 225/50 R17.

My winters are 205/55 R16 and Mike's are 215/60 R16.

So mine under-reads by just over 3,7% and his over-reads by 1,16%.

Mike's adds 7.6mm to his height and mine subtracts 24,9mm. So the ride height difference as measured is spot on.

Are you talking about diameter or radius?

Are my tyres 60mm greater diameter than yours?

We didn't measure those....
