Brake problems

Featured Replies

6 months ago i brought these:

Mintex and disc set - ebay

Brilliant, had them fitted, did squeak alot WHILE braking for the first month, but they settled down, recommended, gave me great braking performance.

Had the car serviced 2 weeks ago, brakes were cleaned/dust removed

Started on Sunday, while driving along now I get squeaking from one front and one rear brake while just driving about, NOT during braking. However if I drive over, say 35mph the squeak stops. I haven’t noticed any performance difference in the brakes at all.

My Fabias only got 44,000 miles on the clock, 05 reg, don’t think anything else could be causing this problem. Booked the car in for next Tuesday to have the brakes taken apart lubed up, and copper greased, don’t know what else to do, reckon this would solve the problem?

Guess I will be continuing to squeak then

I got that exact set!

I think they're pretty good. Stopping has improved a lot, especially in the rain and at speed, a little bit more noise when brakes slammed on but much better.

It'll take a good 200+ miles for them to bed in tidy.

Have you actually put any copper/non slip grease on when fitting them?

I would say the squeaking is for deffo not enough copper grease!!!

Squeaking has NOTHING to do with being good or bad brakes really! Yes you could say they create alot of dust which lead to squeaking (which in mintex case is true as they dont last long). I like them for teh price and you would find it hard to beat them for the £££. Yes they are rather aggressive and wear disks quickely as well as themselves but fabia disks arnt expensive in teh grand scheme of things. Get a hose on them would be my initial advice and after that re-grease the back of the pads if squeak hasnt gone. Tho normaly a good jet wash and they will be good

Thanks for the replies chaps, I didnt fit them so I have no idea how much grease etc was applied, will make sure they do a decent job on tuesday.

I fitted standard 'Mintex' discs and pads, didn't take the two years afterwards to get the rear discs rusted up again, so

cleaned them up a bit and refitted.

Had front pad slap, after about a month or so, fixed that by fitting small shim on top of each pad, that was two years ago (problem solved)

Was generous with copper-based grease when fitting shims and the rear of pads.

Brakes were efficient immediately although avoided heavy braking for a couple of months.

And now car some 6 years old will fit new rear discs and pads, and only front disc pads, as the discs are showing little wear or any faultsemoticon-0148-yes.gif

See what next Member down has written ( I totally agree )

drilled/grooved/dimpled for cosmetic use only....stick to oem discs.

They look very much like what I used to have:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/86689-discs-and-pads/page__view__findpost__p__1058742

Probably as good at stopping as the 312s I have now, but wore more quickly than I was comfortable with which is why I swapped for bigger (OEM) brakes. But if you don't do the miles I do, they should be fine!

Oh, and fancy patterns on the disc don't really add much, as has been said - unless you're into abusing your brakes and glazing the pads!

They look like Mintex m1144 or something like that and are for track use. You have to expect some squeal now and again. The noise usually goes away when they are nice and hot. If you don't want any such noise only the OE pads will suit you.

Not strickley true is it or these superbikes, touring cars etc... wouldnt use them would they?

You in the habit of braking so hard in road use that your pads glaze? The only real benefit they have in road use is that it's easier to tell when your discs are worn out since the grooves wear flat. Which with pads like those listed by the OP will be very soon indeed IME...

Road bikes all have drilled disks and many road cars ;)

...yes, and ask any car driver who's failed an MoT due to them cracking what they think of them. On the road, fancy discs serve no purpose: it's as simple as that! On track bikes they help save unsprung weight as well as having the anti-glaze effect the do on cars. But seriously, other than bling they're pointless on the roads!

Cast ones dont crack like drilled ones. I know im being an awkward ****** as you are right they arnt "needed" for most people. On that note Ive NEVER had any crack but them I have never brough cheap ones. All £400+ a pair

I think you'll find that ALL discs need a certain amount of machining to get the necessary clean edges for the grooves / dimples / holes that casting (in the case of car discs) or stamping (in the case of bike discs) simply can't provide. What prevents cracking or other deformation is the annealing process that's done once the the disc is complete. I'd be surprised if the ebay discs you see that are milled from OEM discs are stress-relieved at all, whereas the Brembos / EBCs of this world will thoroughly heat-treat the discs after they're made all spangly.

Let's not forget, though, that the best brakes in the world won't be worth a penny if you're rolling round on rubbish tyres - no sense throwing good money after bad!

(Not saying the OP does have rubbish tyres on their car, but it's worth remembering all the same! )

Thought they were all made of cast apart from ones made out ceramic etc ??

It's just someone took their Black & Decker out and drilled some holes and/or used a router to carve some grooves,

in the disc faces.LOL

Cheap ones like EBC are drilled. Hence EBC have a terrible reputation nowardays. I dont know whats happened to them but presuming they are being made in hfgasklghsdafghyuisdf now

i had mintex pads on,and squeeeled lika a pig whilst driving ,not braking .

turned out the pad material lifted away from the metal carrier , ill never buy again.

bought some bosch pads and disks, really good

Where these bosch disks and pads just high quality standards?

Bit of an update: Had the brakes cleaned/lubed up today, still squeeling while driving not braking. If I replaced the pads for standards but left the drilled brakes on, rekcon this would solve the problem?!

yes they were, the pads cost about £50 something like that,

sounds like what i had,

when mine first started doing it, the further/warmer the disks got the worse the squeel seemed to get.

i had drilled disks on when this happened, thought they were warped and binned them like a tit, so i bought new disks. guess what problem solved for 2 days then started again.

took the car to a local garage as i thought the wheel bearing may have gone, said it was fine, and applied copper grease, okay for 20mins then squeeled again.

finally changed the pads and havent heard a peep since,.

Pretty much like the rest of the whole car, assembled abroad, parts from all over the world, bought by lots of different countries.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

EBC always used to have a terrrible reputation

In the early days they simply bought and repackaged pads made by EFI, which were the cheapest brake pads available.

After a few years of successful marketing and making the uneducated believe that they were buying something wothwhile, I think EBC actually made enough money to buy EFI
