Bolero SD Card - Problem?

Featured Replies

I have downloaded about 15gb of tunes onto a 16gb SD card for use in my Bolero.

There are about 65 folders with a maximum of 1 layer of sub folder under the main folder.

The Bolero will only display about 60% of the main folders.

I am wondering if there is a maximum number of 'files' which the Bolero will either read or display,or is there another explanation?

Any help much appreciated!!!!!

Malc

Are they all MP3 files? Are any of the files DRM protected - if so, the Bolero cannot play DRM protected files or MP3Pro format.

How long does it take the read the card - if it is taking a while then you may need a firmware upgrade at the dealers........

I have an 8Gb card and it displays all of the tracks/folders fine, not tried with a 16 or 32 yet....

Thanks Andyvee. I have checked and all the files are MP3 format.

The 16gb card has about 65 folders and a total of about 3500 mp3 files in the folders.

The Bolero display only shows about 60% of the folders even though when I check the card on my PC all the folders and files are present. I have tried deleting some of the displayed folders and the Bolero then displays more of the list (ie it shows a few folders which were not displayed before deletions, if that makes sense).

This would seem to support the theory that there is a limit to the maximum number of folders/files the Bolero will read on a card. However I would like to confirm this or be able to 'argue' with the main dealer if there is a warranty fault.

As before any information gratefully received

Hi mallhall01

I have exactly the same problem. I am dealing with the dealer at the mo. I have a 16GB card with 14GB of music but it will only display 10GB of music. If i delete some folders the it moves down, again only displaying 10GB of music. I assumed it was a capacity issue rather than a folder issue.

To make matters worse I am a Mac user and did not have a windows machine. All of my music was in AAC format so had to be converted. Once this was done I had change the format of the folders so i now have 1 folder for each album, so there are no sub folders.

Once this was done i had to obtain a PC and delete all of the 'hidden' mac folders to ensure the card was read correctly. Again it would only read to 10GB.

So a trip to the dealer was next and we tried the SD card in 2 other new Skodas with Boleros and exactly the same. It read to the same point. So we tried in in 2 Octavia mk2 phase 1 and they all read the whole card, but the machine was slower to read the info. So the problem is still with the dealer and i am awaiting more info. Today I have sent a lot of data regarding the card and file structure. I will keep this updated as I go.

If you find more info, please let me know.

Regards

Interesting - thanks Dk.

I have e-mailed Skoda and have had an acknowledgement with the promise of a response to follow.

I will follow your suggestion and update this post when/if I get a reply.

Yesterday evening I had an email back from my Skoda dealer asking me to reduce the number of folders to prove/disprove if it is the number of folders or a capacity issue. This is what I did - I originally had 172 folders on the SD card (1 for each album) and the SD card read up to and including folder 160. I have now moved them into 95 folders (artists with albums in them) and it still stops at the same alphabetical place, so therefore it must be related to the size rather than the content.

The SD card is read to the same album, but now I have restructured the folders the final album showing is not complete, there are only 2 songs in the folder where there were 8 previously. This only adds weight to the argument that the Bolero is capacity restricted. I assume this is because new folders and text on each folder takes bytes and this is crucial. Also now there are sub folders the card is taking longer to read.

The car is booked in for the 11th and i will update when i have more info.

I have tried this with exactly the same results - so it does look like the Bolero will only read about 10gb of data.

I would be very interested in how the dealer resolves this -DK please keep posting.

I have an 8gb car in mine and it still doesn't read all the folders so the max isn't 10gb

Hi Jonno VRs

I have an appointment with my dealer on Monday to go through this as it is driving me mad (yes i do have a form of OCD). Could you do me a favour and note where the card reads to and then pop it in a pc and highlight the files to that point so you can then see what the combined total is. I am beginning to think it might be a percentage of the total.

Many thanks in advance.

DK

I have a 32Gb card in mine.

Path length to any file does not exceed 64 Characters

It definitely hits a limit as only some of the artists beginning with T are listed. Anything after that is missing.

A playlist that references all of my compilation albums (Various) displays as blank on the Bolero as it isn't reading as far as the V folder!

File structure is as follows

Root

Playlist1.m3u

Playlist2.m3u

_A

__Abba

___Abba Gold

____Track1.mp3 etc

_B

_C

etc

_Z

Anything in a playlist that is in a folder past T just disappears!

If you delete the artists beguiling A, B and C does the Bolero mow display the artists beginning U, V and W?

Malc

I will try.

I was going to sync less music to the card and see at what point it stopped seeing songs. There are about 3100 tracks on there at the moment, not sure how many it is seeing.

OK it's off to Skoda. I will update when I have more. Can the guys that have posted please state what how many GB's the Bolero is reading and how big the card is as i am trying to make sense of this.

I am also going to ask the dealer to look at the firmware to confirm if it is the latest one.

I'll keep posting.

Many thanks

DK

I have been watching this thread and have the same problem

I have a 16gb SD Card

There are 2889 files on there (11.4gb)

The unit is only reading 2117 files (8.32gb)

Cheers

I'll hold on to this until l have spoken with Skoda. I am not convinced they have any idea what is wrong as they only get problems from those who use it as those that don't don't know it doesn't work so the more we can collate the more chance we have of a resolution.

Can I ask what age the car is, I assume it is a face lift and brand new?

OK - synced 1 playlist with about 2000 tracks and it seems to have got them all?

Perhaps the limit is on the number of folders????

Anyway, there is definitely a limit!

I will try about 28Gb worth all in the root of the card and see what happens!

Not sure what firmware I have, but it only takes about 10 secs to read a full 32Gb card when it is first put in, so must be a recent one. I also think the head unit came out of a 2010 Octy.

Its an 11 plate Skoda Octavia Elegance Estate. Ive had it about 2 weeks.

I just registered to this forum because of the problem you are discussing.

I have a brand new Superb (2 weeks old) and therefore i bought a 32 GB HCSD card for mp3!

Put about 12Gb music on the car - but less then 10Gb was in the playlist (or about 2000 songs)

I will also contact the dealer - maybe he has heard about it... I'll be back!

Thanks for the info guys, I am still awaiting a response from the dealer. However i have found this

So we are not the only ones and no one seems to know the answer.

I will keep you all posted.

Hi all

thanks for some very interesting posts. After 3 e-mails I managed to get the response (copied below) from Skoda. It begs the question on a systen DESIGNED for music files why publish that it will read a 32gb card (which I suspect wiill hold in excess of 4,000 mp3 files)when the usable limit is 2,000files?

I don't suppose that there is any chance of a refund for all of us who purchased 32gb cards?

If anyone gets a better response (eg from a dealer) please keep posting.

Dear Mr. Hall,

thank you for your letter. I would like to apologize for long lasting delay of my answer caused by technical problems in

receiving emails.

I examined your question and from the quality department I got information, that there is a limit of 2000 files, which new

Bolero can read from the SD card. There is no defect on the radio, but 3500 MP3 files is too much.

Doesn't explain why older Bolero's can access more files, but very slowly until they have the firmware upgraded!

That answer stinks of an excuse, as they publish no information on the limit on the number of files. I can get over 3000 files on a 32gb SDHC card, all at 320kbps.

So, what is the point of 32gb card support if you can only use about 20Gb of it???????

  • Author

Couldn't agree more.

Anybody any suggestions on how (or if) we can take this further?

Malc

Ask your new friend at Skoda why some Bolero's will read all of the files on the card, and some won't.

Therefore his answer of 2000 files is the limit is incorrect, unless it is firmware or hardware version dependent.

At a guess, it is a firmware issue so can then be rectified with a new firmware if enough people complain.

OK I have my car back. No resolution yet.

The dealer has proved that all new cars there with the Bolero will not read the card beyond where i can read it. Some older cars there 59 plate and previous can. Therefore i believe the product has changed, although this has not been confirmed by either the dealer or Skoda UK.

I have been asked to obtain a 32gb SD card which i have ordered (32gb Class 10) and put all of my music on it so we can prove/disprove if the older models can read all the info.

In the course of the discussion i have been told the 'current' model can read a 32gb card but read only 2,000 files. However this is not my experience. Mine read over 2,000 files but less than 10% more.

Also i have been told that the Delphi manufactured unit is limited to 2,000 files, whereas the Bosch unit reads it all. This is an interesting comment as it sows the unit is manufactured in 2 different companies to 2 different specs. The confusion continues......

Again i will update when i have more info.
