Diesel Particulate Engine Fault

Featured Replies

I have a 2009 Superb CR170 that is just out of warranty. Earlier today the car went into safety mode with the message "Engine Fault Workshop!" and "Diesel Particulate Owners Manual" coming up on the display. The DPF light and the engine light are constantly on and the glow plug light is flashing. I drove the car as per the owners manual for when the DPF warning light comes on but there is no improvement, so I did the same again for a slightly longer distance and again no improvement. I have had the car for over 2 years and have covered just over 30000 miles/50000 kilometers. The car is regularly driven hard and doesn't do short trips. The DPF light has never come on before.

This morning the car was driven for an hour and a half, parked for two hours, and when it was restarted and driven 150m the warning lights came on and the car went into safety mode. I'm getting the VagCom run on it tonight. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? The filter hardly packed up in one go without any warning, is there something else that can cause this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had exactly same symptoms on my 2009 Superb CR170 last summer. Mileage was about 45000 kilometers then. It happened just after long trip to Prague. I was suspecting some bad quality diesel fuel from Poland, but actually it was some faulty exhaust sensor giving false indication, which forced DPF to regenerate itself continiously. In reality DPF was clean. Faulty sensor was replaced under warranty and till now no problems.

Hope you are using "long life oil and not "PD" oil. Some ignorant dealers fill dpf equipped cars with the wrong oil which is not dpf friendly.

G.K.: The oil is replaced with the right stuff alright, and it even gets an intermediate oil change by myself half way through the dealer recommended intervals.

erikiri: Do you know what exhaust sensor was faulty, I've read that the sensor 03G906051A which is to the rear offside of the engine is known to give problems. The fact that it went straight into safety mode without ever having the DPF light come on before lead me to suspect a sensor or the like.

Twincamman I had the very same problem as you and as erikiri asys it was a faulty exhaust sensor. The car is Feb 2009 and had @ 100k on it. It was just out of warranty but the dealer replaced it under good will warranty. Car has been perfect since.I think this must be some what of a common fault as the dealer had a sensor in stock which I found strange. The job only took 15 mins once it was diagnosed.

Hope this helps.

John.

Just ran a diagnostics on it, and it came back with these two fault codes.

009263 - Diesel Particulate Filter (Bank 1): Restricted/Clogged

001137 - Exhaust Pressure Sensor 1 (G450): Implausible Signal

So it's looking like the exhaust pressure sensor is to blame, I'll keep you all posted on how I get on.

What GK means is are you using 507 spec oil, this is the only oil to use as it's the low ash one, anyway lets hope it is just the sensor, I take it you aren't in the UK given you only had a 2 year VAG fix it plan?

Our pd Octavia had issue with that sensor , went through a couple but its been fine for the last couple of years

Just to let you know how thing worked out. I replaced the sensor (G450), with the newer version, but for some reason I was unable to do a forced regeneration with the VagCom. Passive regeneration was working, but active (forced) wouldn't. My Skoda dealer took the car and regenerated it, and said that was all it needed. I have my doubts as it took them over two days to regenerate it! But I have my car back and it's running perfect so I'm happy now.

Our Superb has just started doing it as well but ours has gone into "limp home" mode.

Wondering if its down to ours having had a sports exhaust as it's a 2009 and only done 17.5k!

Can it just be scanned and cleared or would ours need to get the DPF part of it's ECU settings deleted?

Get the inners out of the DPF and dial out the sensor

There is a pictorial in the search

You wouldnt believe what oil some people put in these!

I have had garages phoning me up, asking why DPF's go, and when I tell them that the main reason is wrong oil, The normal response is, "Well I only use 10w40 semi synthetic in every car"

Bit scary really, that these are suppose to be the experts!

:o :( Tell me they're not other Skoda workshops!! I know it should never happen, but it did to one guy on here

Lads today I got the "Engine Fault Workshop!" and "Diesel Particulate Owners Manual" error on my 2009 CR170 superb.

I didn't get the Diesel Particulate warning ahead of the Engine Fault Workshop ! error it went straight to the 2 errors. Had been town and country driving for 15-20 mins and then the errors appeared. Went into limp mode.I was near home so I'm parked up now. I didnt try the recommendation in the manual to drive at high revs as I assume this has to happen before limp mode, but I didnt get a DPF error to try that...

Just trying to see what I need to do tomorrow.

The dealer is 12 miles away so I'm wondering if its safe to drive the car to the garage in limp mode...It has only been running for 1-2 minutes since error appeared. If its the sensor as others have noted above how much does it cost to replace as I'm out of warranty and how long does it take to fit...

Once you get all three lights (DPF, EML and glowplugs) you can't initiate a regen by driving the car as per the instructions in the manual.

A forced regen by a dealer is your only option.

Yes, the car will be fine to drive to the dealer in limp-home mode.

The sensor is around £70 and takes about an hour to fit and code so add about an hours worth of labour.

Good luck with getting it sorted out.

Silver1011 thanks for the advice.

Was at garage today and it was the sensor as you describe.

It cost €190 for part and fitting and regen.

Could be worse I suppose....

I had a dpf limp home issue on an A4, when driving it to the dealer in limp mode, whatever the issue was cleared and the car drove ok for the last half of the journey, however the light was still on the dash, a new sensor was fitted. this resolved the issue.

Good luck with yours
