Replacing door seal (NOT the usual leaky doors)

Featured Replies

I'm trying to beat the incredible wind noise I get. I found that the inner door seal, the one that goes around the whole door frame attached to the car, had come away at the edges and we haven't been able to push it back in for whatever reason, so I decided to just buy a new one (which is wrong, it's white trimmed on the inside!!)

I attempted to seal the gap with silcone sealant. Didn't really do much good.

Anyway, to replace this it looks like you have to take out some interior trim and I can't figure out how. Specifically the trim where the bonnet release lever is, and the trim that the front seat belts disappears behind.

Anyone know how? Is it just more forceful pulling and they're clipped on like the rest of it?

I think DRJ was trying this a while ago for a different reason. Not sure if he succeeded or not, but might be worth searching his topics, see if the answer was found.

Would be great if you could report back if it makes a difference or not too.

Aha. Thanks. I will have a search. I've removed the carpets, so have removed the other bits of trim... but those bits didn't need to come off, so I never bothered. Typical :)

I always try and report back. It should do - it's a heck of a gap to the outside world! On both sides too, but it is worse on the drivers side.

I think mine was leaking at the point you've highlighted in picture 2 - I've resorted to hoping that pushing the trim on as far as possible has cured the leak at this point

I utterly failed to get the bonnet release trim panel off...

I'll attempt to figure it out and report my findings then! :giggle:

ive done this before, its abit fiddly. The trim where the seatbelt bit is, u gotta remove top and bottom by removing the seatbelt nut near the top. the bonnet level bit is very fiddly takes some time lol

and yeah it alot of pulling lol

Ah. Okay great thanks.

After you have the lever off though, did you figure out how to get that bit of trim off? Is it just a case of pulling at it and it's just clipped in?

im pretty sure i just unclipped it enuf (but not fully cus of the bonnet realease) that the old seal came out. i shud of taken pics when i done it sori mate. i just remember it being very fiddly and didnt fancy doing it again lol

Righty dokey. All I actually had to do was pull up the bit of trim along the bottom of the doors really, like where the fuel cap lever is. That's easy enough. Then I just went at the seal from the middle top of the door. The other bits of trim came out enough just through the act of pulling the old seal out.

I'm not sure if the new seal has made a different yet. I think it has, but there's still definitely a bit of wind noise getting through somewhere. Maybe it's normal... though I don't seem to remember getting any in the Elegance.

I can hear a small amount of turbo hiss / whistle getting through from somewhere.

Meh. On hold for now. I'll sort the clunking first and come back to look at this at a later date.

edit - Oh, getting the bonnet lever off is dead easy, thanks! You can do it with your key. No screwdriver required :)

Nope. I'm still getting excessive wind noise coming through :( I guess I will just have to try replacing other seals until it goes away.

It's bad enough that passengers think a door is open, or the window slightly down :( I'm pretty sure that's not normal.

Replaced the inner window seal. Bit of an awkward one, but can be done easily enough.

1. Take off the door cards.

2. Remove speaker.

3. Remove old seal. It goes right down in to the door on the front (nearest bonnet) of the door

4. Insert new seal. Easy right up until you get to the front of the window. You need to slide that part down in to the door, then if you have small hands you can press it on easy enough through the speaker hole.

Unfortunately it didn't cure my wind noise, so it's either got to be:

1. The door needs adjusting - I still don't know how to do this, but have read it can be done?? Any pictures from anyone who knows?

2. The outer 'window guide' seals need replacing. I think these might be a bit of a nightmare, as it looks like they're similar to the inner window guide seal in that it goes right down in to the door. I'm not sure removing the speaker will help either...?

3. Windscreen fitted badly? It was autoglass, so I wouldn't be surprised. They destroyed the plastic bonnet clip things below the windscreen and didn't bother to replace them. Can I get a Windscreen re-fit maybe???
