Brembo refurb on the mongrel

Featured Replies

Only doing one caliper this morning, but its one I "half did" a while back, so there is some old lacquer, and the lacquer on the face is a bit newer, but still fairly bad....

Mongrel all prep'd for some work

Close up of damage. Note lifting lacquer on the sides, but not so nice fresher lacquer on the face, with marks.

Attacking (gently ish) the flaky lacquer with weapon of choice, a flat stubby screwdriver type of thing. I also ended up using the flat edge of a stanley knife on parts. Marking the paint a bit is not too much of a worry at the moment

The caliper with all peeled off. Next stage was 1200 grit wet & dry, but once this was done I had to do something about the marks on the edges, so I decided as I had a can of "bright red" metal protekt paint in the shed, I would have a go.

And this is how I just left it. I did use a hand-held bit of newspaper as well to provide a little more protection. Hoping this dries back into a similar colour to the original caliper. When finished, I can cope with a bit of mis-matched red paint, but not bare metal under the lacquer.... Note the red on the newspaper is not drips, just me "getting the can started" before actually spraying on the caliper.

More to follow later on. Need to let that red paint dry a bit. :D

Gonna watch this closely as I need to do a little bit of a refurb on my standard calipers

Keep the photo's coming Jason

Sadly didn't go quite as I hoped. The colour match was poor, but an up note, its a good colour to use if I decide some time to re-do the whole caliper from scratch. I would need a new set of Brembos stickers though, in that scenario

After paint patch had dried. Better paint than the original in the end. :D

Prep'ing for lacquer process. 3 coats of petrol resistant lacquer, 15 mins apart.

And the final finish, with the wheel on, because I wasn't happy with the overall appearance (I'm a bit of a perfectionist....) The shine in the top bit shows what I was aiming to achieve with the whole thing. Need to wash the car tomorrow now. Wheels are a bit "dusty" but for now, I just want to give the maximum amount of standing time for the lacquer to harden.
