Steel Rims for Winter

Featured Replies

Tried this question under Winter Tyres without any response - I want to start looking around for a cheap option to have Winter Tyres by November.

Will 16" steel rims off a VW T5 van fit the Yeti 2.0 110? The tyres currently on them are 205/65 R 16 C

Hi Sandy,

not sure of things like the wheel bolt spacing on a T5 van; the tyre size you mention are not a recommended size for the Yeti that is for sure.

have a look at the tyre and rim guide;

My link

Might be of some help,

It was just the steel rims I wanted because I would have the tyres removed at a garage and have brand new Winter tyres put on. Even thought of getting them sprayed (Candy) white to match the car when it arrives circa September.

No they won't fit at all since the T5 has 5x120 bolts/wheels and the Yeti can only take 5x112 bolts/wheels. Some people learnt this the hard way when they bought T5 centre caps that kept falling off.

Thanks for your replies - now realise there's no cheap easy answer to this one.

These found at random on Ebay would do the job:

Hopefully the links work. I bought a set for my Yeti, like these last Autumn and they provided the perfect solution. The key things to remember are to look for the 5 x 112 stud pattern, 16" diameter, rim width 6.5 or 7 inch and an ET of between 40 and 45. Most Audi A4/A5 wheels will fit but beware of Golf GTi wheels, there are lots about but they are 5 x 100 although they will look great on Fabias or Roomsters. The spigot (centre hole) sizing is also important - I believe that A4s share the same size as the Yeti. My original centre caps were too small but a set from a Seat Toledo fitted a treat once they had some Skoda stickers added.

Plenty of these wheels crop up so it is worth holding out for a set at a sensible price and in good condition. If the listing does not give all of the measurements and the seller can't help, move on to the next listing. Ignore any that are badly kerbed or bubbling and you will still find a set. Get your winter tyres as soon as they become available, as the supply dries up and prices will rise when you get to October/November. Mytyres.co.uk are a good starting point but there are others such as camskill.co.uk etc. Any decent independent tyre fitting centre will swap the tyres for you, for about £10 - £40 all in, even if you source your own tyres.

AND most important, tell your insurance company.

Edit for readability!

Many thanks for taking the time to respond - this is just the info I was after and I will definitely take up your advice and start looking around on ebay.

I bought a set of steel rims and winter tyres for my Passat last winter from mytyres.co.uk . They came fitted and balanced ready to fit.

After all the help I've received I thought I'd try and give a little back. So I thought this link I've come across may be of use to those looking for extra (Winter) or alternate (Prettier!) wheels to fit the SM:

Wheel Fitment

Sandy

I have just brought a set of 15" steels with 4 tyres (5mm on each) for £120 on e-bay.

The wife doesn't like the look of the steel rims, but plastic wheel trims for 15" are cheap.

Oh, and new winter tyres in 195/65x15 are cheap :)

I didn't know that you could fit 15" wheels to the yeti.......??

If it's any help to anyone the Skoda steel wheels I just ordered for mine were as follows.

Part number. V3C0 601 027 M0 3C My understanding is that they are 7J / 16H2 / ET 45

£189 for 4 inc. Vat

The tyres were Dunlop Winter Sport M3 215/60/16 rated at 95H

£107 each fitted. Ordered by ATS from Dunlop, coming from Germany, apparently.

'Rif' wheel trims are part number 3T0601147 MHB and are £118 for 4 inc. VAT

(Or run of the mill plastic covers £12 plus VAT for set of 4 from Maccess).

The circumference of the winter tyre/wheel combo equates to a 1.2% alteration to the stock tyre (225/50/17) circumference, resulting in a change to the [theoretically correct] speedo reading at 60mph, to 59.8mph. Not a lot! This to be seen in relation to the approximately 6.5% difference in my actual (gps checked) road speed vs the indicated speed on the clock. If I'm not mistaken (and I often am) the winter tyres will help to correct the inaccuracy of the actual road speed to the indicated speed down from 6.5% to 5.3%. Still very much legal and still optimistic compared to other cars I've had, but not as bad as the Hyundai i10 I had which was way out (but, of course, still perfectly legal).

It was my firmly held understanding that you most definitely couldn't.

You are quite correct Oldstan!;)

The pcd and rim offset are the same on my new 15" rims, why won't they fir.

They are from an Audi A6

195/65/15

PCD 5x 112

Rim offset=45

The rolling diameter is 30mm less than my 17" standard wheels

Could I get you to repeat that?

Perhaps in bold red lettering for all to see. :)

My understanding was that you had to keep within sizes approved by SUK. Protracted topic well documented on here. Do check back and hope, for your own sake, I'm wrong. (As noted earlier, I often am).

Have a look for reports regarding correspondence with Will Fisher at SUK CS. He made enquiries from Head Office Technical Management and gave couple of acceptable sizes and I do not recall seeing a 15 inch option there. Approval from SUK being essential to comply with insurance companies requirements which, as I gather, is now taken much more seriously with large fines for fitters installing wrong sizes. (Info from Camskill).

For information only, look on the Miata.net (Tire size calculator). http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Hi,

you my find the 15" rims will not fit over the front brakes on a 140 :wonder: defiantly not with the 170. Would also be concerned by the tyre size choice suggested; get a lot of sideways movement on those tyres (particularly winters) going round a bend with 1600Kg's of Yeti.

Appreciate the spare is a 195/60 but 16" and speed limited to 50mph.

Just my own thoughts on this one which I hope will help,

TP

Edit: Clearance offered between 16" rims and the smaller front discs and callipers of a 110

So are you saying, I can only fit rims approved by SUK, boooooo :(

So are you saying, I can only fit rims approved by SUK, boooooo :(

Well, yes. If you ring any insurance co. (and I've rang about a dozen recently) and ask them about winter tyres, they, without a shred of doubt, will say the wheel/tyre combination MUST be approved by the manufacturer. They have been caught out by the last two or three winters where people have fitted WT's and have been telling customers all sorts of things but the Insurance overseer, ABI, I believe, has issued guidance and they are now aware of WT's and accept their fitment and most do not impose charges, as they did, and are generally OK with them. BUT they must be an approved size and many (but not all) companies require you to inform them of their fitment and removal...and some do charge an admin fee for you to tell them! Ring a couple yourself and see. Some companies don't have any admin. fee when you notify of policy changes (NFU Mutual for example). Trouble is, NFU Mutual wanted £320 rather than £220 which several others quoted when I enquired recently

I have been out in the rain swapping tyres, well front only, as it has the larger brakes.

The 15" rims FIT !

They are close to the brake caliper, but the wheel rotates by hand without any problems.

I am trying to add pictures to prove it.

Sorry to be a gloomy poster on this thread but I would be very cautious about this sizing -3cm is more than an inch less than standard and this sounds quite a lot. Are you sure that the tyres are up to the required spec re loading and speed rating? They may be cheaper but that size would generally be intended for smaller and lighter cars than a Yeti. Specification is as important as physical size

The picture shows them to be almost lost in the wheelarches and the centre hole looks to be larger than the centre of the hub - spigot. It could just be the angle of the photo but you can fix this with appropriately sized spigot rings if needed. If there is a gap, the weight of the car is placed on the wheel studs.

The tyre /wheel combination would appear more appropriate on a Fabia or Roomster but they take 5x100 pcd, so no use there.

I placed the tyre on top of the 17" Yeti tyre, same external diameter.

With regards to the central hole, it fits exactly over the hub spigot section.
