How much does it cost to buy Satnav?

Featured Replies

I have an Elegance ordered since mid April. My dealeradvised me to email SUK to ask if they could inform me of any other accessoriesthat would become available prior to the building of my Yeti.

To be honest I was hoping that stop/start technology wouldbe coming through the range – but that’s another issue!

SUK replied today (26/5/11) saying that, with regret, theycould not do that but did send me a pdf for the new accessory brochure.

Which brings me to my niggle.................the aftermarketColumbus satnav (which I could not justify) costs £1550.00. The price for having it installed at buildtime is £1510. The same brochure shows my Bolero radio as £695.00 as anaftermarket item. Did anyone who had Columbus installed get their defunctBolero unit neatly packaged ready for you to sell on ebay? If the answer is no then how much is theColumbus worth? £2245?

If you flew to America and your business seatcost £300 and you were given the opportunity to upgrade to first classfor £200 more you would expect the total cost to be £500. Using the same logicif you flew Skoda airlines they would expect you to pay £800. The maths doesn’tadd up. If I am being unfair would someone from SUK please explain whereI am wrong

I fitted a Columbus from ebay for a little over £500 and sold the Bolero for £170.

While it works fine, I've had an issue upgrading to maps V7. So is the saving worth it while I am stuck with maps V6?

In my opinion looking at the SUK price, yes.

Cost? Not that much if you buy an Android phone! It has Navigator installed.

Buy a Tom Tom, £140, and install it in the cubby box on top of the dash, works perfectly, and easy to update the maps, hidden when you are not using it. I can't understand why anyone would pay 1500 for a built in satnav. The cubby hole lid also acts a s a good sunshade making it easier to read the screen.

As a pennywise Yorkshireman (and exceedingly proud to be!) the thought of stumping up 1500 quid extra for a built in jobbie is a big no no (I know it does other things as well.

I have a 4 year old Garmin Nuvi which cost about £200 but the equivalent can now be had for about £120.

Until this packs up I can update with lifetime maps for the whole of Europe as many times as I like which cost a one off £75.

I also subscribe to updatable Cyclops speed camera warning which costs £29 annualy and is pretty accurate.I have driven extensivly in UK, Netherlands,Germany and Pays de Grenouille and have marvelled at the accuracy of the machine.Very very occasionally need to stop and re-trace. Mind you I do always have a good old map which SWMBO likes to peruse if she is with me.Also as removable can pre programme my trip sat at home.

Must say built in ones are impressive but why buy an Audi when a Skoda is just as good or in the Yeti`s case even better IMHO.

But then I can't understand people who pay extra money for flashy wheels that merely go round and round and get dirty like any others! Or those who want stripes on the side of the car ... As with any item that is customisable, modifiable, whatever, individuals will decide what they want on the basis of their own (not always necessarily logical) predilections. And yes, I did choose Columbus as an option!

When I first moved to Yorkshire I thought 'tight' was an insult, but I've come to realise that Yorkshiremen view it as a compliment! :D

Me too with the satnav thing though ... treated Betty to a new Tom Tom (£200), with a years worth of speed camera and mapping updates for free, together with a years subscription to live traffic reports. After that, £40 a year subscription for updates. My computer tells me when updates are available and I just plug the Tom Tom into that to receive them.

Built in satnav? Ripoff!

A good word us Yorkshire folk use is Thoil and I should have said i could not thoil paying for a built in satnav.

Urban dictionary translates as "To be able to afford an object, but not able to justify the expense" or just plain tight wi brass :D

Just over £1000 for the sunroof seems much better value for money.

In my defence as an extravagant spendthrift I must emphasise again (as has been necessary in the past) that I am merely an exile in Yorkshire, being originally of good Kentish stock.

I personally have used both Tom Tom stand alone units and TomTom on my iPhone, and on several Palm devices and windows mobile. I have also used Skoda's MFD2 and I'm on my 2nd Columbus.

I visit between 2 & 8 clients per day and got pi**ed off taking the sat nav off the windscreen, cleaning the circle and taking it with me or hiding it in the car.

So for me the extra expense was worth it. Yes it is silly expensive but it integrates perfectly with the maxidot, I can watch DVD's, stream BT audio (like Bolero)

As it was factory fit I can also control using my voice.emoticon-0100-smile.gif and there should be no problems updating the mapsemoticon-0140-rofl.gif

+1 but it does tend to rub off, particularly when you marry a Yorkshire Lass. Personally nearly a Cockney by birth.

+2, I'm a good owld Norfolk boy. I've also learned that the standard Yorkshire response to any quoted price is "Owwww moooch? I only want one tha knows, not t'whole shopful"

My Tom Tom is mounted on a proclip permanently fixed to the A pillar, so no sticky marks on the window. The proclip is hard wired into the fusebox, so no dangly wires. It's a matter of less than a second to pop it off the mount and either into the door pocket or my own pocket/briefcase when I leave the car. It also accepts voice commands, and navigated me door to door across Europe in March, and the difference in price between the Tom Tom and Columbus pretty much paid for that holiday. Thoil ... good word B)

You cannot apply such logic to option prices or anything to do with cost of cars. The market dictates. Is a 140 DSG Yeti really worth DOUBLE what an E costs?! No. But that is what the market pays for something like that and therefore that is the price. Same with options.

I`ll bring mine down to get a pro clip next year Bob.

And as a wind up to the Man of Kent its fine when you are on an index linked government pension Andrew you`ve no worries about brass!!!

PS Do you ever go to the White Lion at Cray as my mates brother is running the place and thought we might give it a try?

Cheers

Peter :)

to the Man of Kent

Ah, now is he a "Man of Kent" or a "Kentish Man"? I vaguely remember there's a difference and it's got something to do with the River Medway?

I have my Garmin on a bean bag type device that I keep in the glove box and bring out when required. If I used it daily then I would agree with you that it is worth paying for a built in version. For occasional use it is not justifiable. That is the decision people have to make.

What I think irritates most people is that if the built in version was more closely priced to the portable devices then they would pay for the neater look but the price is difference is just so vast.

I have also used them many times in various cars. Another reason why I like the Columbus is the size. 6 1/2" screen I can see. my iPhone, I struggle with. my old tom-tom 720 was 4.3" which was better than the iphone/treo650/tungstenT3/MDA etc. The Columbus does it for meemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I would say that I use mine about 90% of the time as I rarely go to the same place twice.

I agree about the cost, but it will never be the sam unless they integrated tom tom like some manufactures are now.

I quite agree. Will treat the new car ( has yet - or yeti - to be christened ) to a Tomtom with live traffic updates. I am very grateful to the thread on installing a satnav in the cubby box - excellent job

I use mine most days too, but it's the 5" 1005 model.

I am getting a little worried, however, that this discussion will shortly be banned by a moderator. "How big is yours?" "4.3 inches." That's not much, mines 5 inches." "You think that's big, mines 6.5", or at least, that's what I tell the wife."
