European Driving - Headlight Convertors

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend which type of headlight convertors to use for driving in France? Previously I've used the black tape (allegedly illegal) and the stick-on circular deflectors (leaving an imposible to remove residue when taking off). There's some debate whether to actually bother diverting/converting/dipping headlights as the Police don't tend to bother, I'd prefer not to risk a fine and/or invalidating my insurance whilst out there.

thanks in advance.

What model are you driving? If it had the projector lens lights - then im sure i've heard you can reverse which side the lights spray by rotating a clip inside the unit 180 degrees. Not 100% sure though.

You know when you're driving along and somebody with badly aimed lights comes towards you?

Know how annoying that is?

You know when somebody doesn't dip their main beams and you get a face full?

Well the local population is going to have that kind of problem with you driving towards them - both annoying and illegal.

The stick-on ones I've used in the past have all been fine - peeled off afterwards and a little glass cleaner and nothing was left.

HID's can be "flat-lined" via Maxidot.

Cheapest and quickest is the stick-on's.

It's a 2009 Fabia 2 Estate TDI. The lights are projector lens type, but I can't see anything that would appear to change the spread of the lights to the opposire side of the vehicle.

Definitely don't want to upset the locals, although I don't anticipate driving in the dark.

Always grabbed the Halfrauds ones.

Highly recommend reading the AA website guide to driving in European countries as it was essential when I went on the Crumball Rally last year.

Remove the rubberised cap on the rear of the headlight and there is a clearly visable/feelable switch that once moved will flatten the beam pattern for short term european driving.

The same switch that I knocked when changing a bulb and caused me an MOT failure for misalligned headlights on my 2008 Roomster

Remember to switch 'em back :giggle:

Thanks for you help on this, I think I've found the switch, is it a flat metal lever sitting inside the headlight housing, it moves up and down? I've not had chance to test it in the dark yet. The next question is; is it legal for me to use this in France?

Cheers,

Yes that will be it, and its perfectly fine to just use this and drive in France as a tourist.
