Front left pad/disc binding slightly

Featured Replies

Sorry to re-post for all those that have seen this in my Soft Brake Pedal post, but I rather need an answer as I've got a 400 mile journey on Thursday.

I recently replaced the rear discs and pads, initially they were binding a little, so I released the hand brake. They've stopped binding but I do need to do a little work to finish that and allow me to take up a little of the movement in the hand brake.

Today I had to go and get a replacement locking nut for the alloys , when I parked up I noticed a hot brake smell, so I took it for a quick spin and found somewhere I could coast to stop without the use of brakes. All the discs were cool/cold except the front left, which was hot. Not oh you beast burnt myself, but quite hot none the less.

I can't believe it's always been rubbing, the pad looks good and the disc isn't warn, but why would it suddenly have started?

At the moment I'm facing having to either take it to the local garage and get them to investigate, drive it with it rubbing, or take the Girlfriends on Thursday.

Ever had a brake fluid change, (every two years) recommended.

Rust in brake caliper bore could be the fault, piston movement restricted, another caliper would be required, if proved the case.

If brakes were binding before you replaced discs etc, would have been the ideal time to have sorted reason for binding out, first. (Sorry)

I don't know if it has to be honest. It hasn't in the last year, before that it was owned by the Police.

I haven't got the manual to hand at the moment.

OK, I stripped the caliper last night, has a hells own job getting the damn thing off after taking the guide pins out.

Wire brushed it, filed it, pushed the piston back in, re-assembled it and... like a complete fool, got the bottom guide pin cross threaded and in removing it I have now completely rhubarbed the thread in the hole.

As you can imagine - rather hacked off with myself, the car etc.

My mood didn't improve when I discovered that the caliper mount on the front seems to be part of the front hub assembly, so I can't even just replace that. This is looking expensive to me now, new what ever that chunk of metal is called, garage to split the existing hub off and put into the new...

That is unless I have missed something that you good folk know about?

I was wondering if I could drill out the hole and put a Helicoil in?

Any help gratefully received.

can't you re-tap the hole? Surely a descent garage would be able to sort this without replacing parts?

From the metal in the guide pin thread, I suspect the tapping would have to be larger, then the pin would be too small.

larger pin?

larger pin?

Nice idea if it's possible to get a larger threaded guide pin that is the same same diameter for the sliding bit?

Out of insterest, when people fit alternative break calipers, what do they mount them on seeing as there isn't a caliper mount point only th guide holes?

The bracket does unbolt - 13mm bolts perhaps (rings a vague bell at any rate)? The calipers are the same as the 288mm ones fitted to some Golfs just with larger adaptors fitted so they're definitely replaceable - bound not to be cheap though.

Hmm, I couldn't see a bracket.

I was expecting to find the large lump of metal that joins to the wish bones etc, a mount bolted to that, then the caliper connected to the mount. But from what I could see the caliper guide bolts seemed to screw straight to the lump connected to the wish bones.

I'll hav to dig Haynes out or try and find an exploded diagram.
