VW MK4 GOLF BLUE TINTED HEATED MIRROR GLASS (FITTING GUIDE)

so got 2 used VW blue tinted heated mirrors (genuine) for £25 posted off ebay, just chanced my luck as the guy was wanting around £32-£34 posted for them and he accepted my offer of £25 so bonus!

fitted them today, didnt realise i would have to disect the wires and extend them as the heating element connectors are at the other side and the wires wouldnt reach.

removed the old mirrors and started using 'bullet style joiners' to extend the old wiring....(cut off old connector and attached these.

then added the extended wire (just stabbed a guess tbh)

i put new connectors on the end of the wires that resembed the ones i cut off, (sorry forgot to get pics now) i then hooked it all up and covered most of the wires in insulating tape and then fitted, the taop also hid the red wires out the way when fitted. done like things on show like wiring etc, so all seems pretty hidden.

happy, nice little mod, i did break the old driverside on removal and it wasnt coming off as easy as passenger side so be careful if anyone else does this mod, the mirrors even though used are in great condition, few little marks on driverside just at the wide angle bit but better than my old one, hardly noticable tbh, i then gave them a clean and noticed the rain was clinging to them quite alot which is annoying in view, so went to get rain-X which was empty so opted for 2 coats of HD wax, should do the trick and get the rain running off them.

i dont know a good way to test the heating elements but i will just hope they work lol, hopefully my wiring works ok.

bit of a essay for a small update but owell, might come in useful for someone.

Just set your mirror switch to the heating position, turn on your ignition and they should be nice and hot within a few minutes. If they are cold, check the 5 amp fuse (number 38), if that's OK then check that the wiring to the mirror glass is connected properly.

Looks good though, well done on the guide and top job mate!

 Nice.

Do the mirrors just pull off? I'd like to do this as-well in the near future :)

pretty much, i used my key to ease them off, like i said old driverside broke, can be tricky to get them off as and tension seems to crack them

Il be doing this in the near future, Good little write up aswell!!

ok just tested the heating elements, driverside working!! passengerside not. :( , checked the wiring and it seems to be fine, are they fused together? i assume so, so i guess the heating element is probably just goosed?

Yes both mirrors use just the 1 fuse I'm afraid. It could be the heating element burned out, mirror glass not connected up properly or faulty wiring anywhere from the fuse box to the passenger side mirror glass.

I've actually removed fuse 38 from my car because I hate the fact that the heated mirrors are needlessly on all the time. Even small electrical consumers will make the alternator work harder and increase fuel consumption slightly and it's a luxury that I can live without in the search for frugal motoring.

there not on all the time, to my knowledge they are only on when the heated rear window switch it active. if thats not on then the mirrors arnt heating either, i might be wrong but im certain thts how they work, doesnt matter if you leave it in L R or heated position

Seems a bit OTT.

Why not used the handy provided switch and turn them off??

As long as the mirror controller is not in the central position then they are off.

On my model they are on all the time when the ignition is on and the switch is set to the heated position.

Because I'm a bit OCD and the switch HAS to be in the central position and I don't want the power going to one of the mirror motors either.

Ahh. I see.... Weird but I get it...

I'm like that with CDs.

They have to be the right way up in their box

even though you can't see them. :D

Thats what I said when I put them on my car about 9 months ago - they were fine in the winter months even without the heater element...

The activation time can be altered with VCDS

By default they're set to infinite heating, I've set mine to 5mins and the rear screen to 9mins (Default setting is 20mins)

BTW, VW will ask around £45 for a blue tinted aspherical mirror glass!

if the heating element is gone i will leave it as it is, if it works i will fix the wiring issue, not a big deal if it heats or not tbh, least driverside works which is a start

Top guide, will be doing this soon too. As for heated mirrors, turn them off lol, I'm a bit OCD but I don't have my fan blowing warm air to my windscreen all the time to have the knobs all straight lol. If not, just adjust them on vagcom, mine go off after few min now

Want me to make up a couple of loom extenders?

Someone's feeling generous! Thanks Mike, but between me and my electrician father, we should (hopefully) manage :D

Instead of cutting the old connectors off use 2.4mm spades, That way you can return it to standard should you want!
