Tailgate LEDs

Featured Replies

Has anyone changed the festoon bulbs for canbus error-free LEDs in the estate tailgate downlighters.

If so could you post the details. Thanks.

I bought a set for exactly this purpose, but the light they emitted was so poor compared to the std ones that I used them for my front side lights instead and used the OE blue coated sidelight bulbs in the tailgate .... much better IMO.

Thanks for that. Just had one of the bulbs out to see. They are not festoon type bulbs at all.

Phil

No they are std w5w (501) wedge bulbs which is where the problem lies, most 501 LED bulbs will have the SMD's at the front as well as the side, so most of the light does not protrude from the side of the bulb, which is why they were so poor.

You can get the correct replacement lights from Superskoda but at 45€ a pair (+P&P) they are not cheap!

The ones I have fitter do have SMD's facing downwards as well, they just do not produce enough light on their own to be an effective replacement, when ALL of the SMD's can be utilized (as in the reflector housing of a headlight then they are fine.

Look at this site , maybe you can find it over there

Would you mind sending me a PM as well to let me know how they look as i am looking at getting the same if they are any good.

Cheers, Rab

Don't worry guys, I'll let you know on this thread here :)

They might be good for the number plate lights, the downlighters in the tailgate and even the puddle lights in the mirrors?

So what is the verdict on them? (pictures would be even better )

I assume that the auction is for a pair of 'bulbs'?

These are being discussed in the DRL's thread too, sorry I have neglected to post here.

They seem good to me, definately brighter and a nice colour. They are pairs from Maxautos on Fleabay

LEDs from MaxAutos on FleaBay. £4.99 a pair inc. free p&p

They are much brighter and flood the boot with light.

Would I be right in thinking all exterior bulbs need to be canbus but interior bulbs dont matter?

I think LEDs give brighter better looking light so I'm going to have to swap the whole lot over, when I finally get the car that is.

Tankdave and myself are slowly working our way through the interior with Leds.

Got get some pics on hear of your ongoing conversion would love to see it :p

Exterior need Canbus ones, interior don't, that's what I've found so far.

I've only got the 4 footwell ones to go, still waiting on a delivery from HK.

When your done guys I'd love a list of what ones you need for where so I can start buying them, my cars in BW 32 so built in 5 weeks, right after the 2 week factory break.

You will need 5 of the bulbs on the left for the interiors and 6 of the bulbs on the right for the tailgate and footwell lights.

Phil

I have 4 of the ones on the left in the Passat. So just ordered 4 more and 8 of the others

They make the car look so much better I think, got to check out the DLR thread again soon.

Thanks Phil and Dave
