Oil consumption

Featured Replies

I've watched the topic of oil consumption in various threads with some interest. My previous Octavia Scout used some in the first couple of thousand miles, but after that I never needed to top it up again. My 170 4x4 Yeti has now done just over 5000 miles(quite a good mix of journey types/lengths/speeds, overall average mpg according to maxidot is 48.6, but presumably a bit less really) and the oil mark on the dipstick has not changed at all.

A number of SM owners have reported quite high oil usage: is it a diesel/petrol issue, an engine size issue, 2wd v. 4wd, owners' driving habits or do individual engines just differ, I wonder? I have no technical know-how about engines whatsoever, but this just interests me!

Same here. My 1.8 Tsi with 1800 miles and the missus 1.2 Tsi with 1300 miles haven't used a drop. My Vrs 170 before them was the same.

Not a drop of oil used on my 170 Yeti after 1620 miles. What surprises me is that on checking it just now the oil still seems very clean - almost discoloured. I always thought it turned black almost immediately with all diesels.

I've always personally believed it's down to how the engine is run in from new. Ive never pandered mine after the initial 500 miles, always ensuring they are revved through once warmed up and my cars engines have never had a drink problem. :p Having said that, after the first oil change is done I then carry it out every 6 months/6k miles.

1.2 TSi / DSG - 3500 miles - average of 42+ MPG and not a drop of oil used......................emoticon-0148-yes.gif

13500 miles - average of 44+ MPG and not a drop of oil used here.....................

13000miles and level 1/4 way down from top dipstick marker.

That seems pretty consistent, then - perhaps, as with most things, it's the people with a problem who (understandably!) make the most noise - I had got the impression over a year or so of using this site that there were some potential oil consumption problems: perhaps they are the exception rather than the rule.

My oil, incidentally, is now quite black which is what I would expect.

18500 miles, service due on friday, never needed to top up and still at mid position between marks.
