Trailer / caravan security

Featured Replies

May well have been covered elsewhere on here, but my thoughts on trailer / caravan security attached or parked when using an Alko type hitch.

Using one of these on the towball there is an opportunity to effect some security by using a longstapled(?) lock placed thro' the hitch release slider slot ie when hitched the unit cannot be unhitched from the ball.

Also possible to use the same slot off the car after tripping the loch mechanism ie pull hitch handle upwards, finger under the ballaperture, press the floopy plate and it will trip the handle into the connected position then simply put the lock bar thro' the slot and as the frogs would say et voila!

Ah a very easy solution! I bought a proper metal hitch lock however that covers the towball area in two ways. One way covers it completely and the other leaves a hole to secure the trailer whilst hitched to a car. Something akin to this:

And then I also have one of those wheel locks to cover one of the wheels.

Only problem with that is that any 'passer by' with an undersized tow ball (yes they do exist) could just drop your trailer onto his/her vehicle and ...gone!!!

You need to use at least one of these http://shop.al-ko.co.uk/products/safety-ball.html or if you have a proper Alko type hitch (most caravans do) one of these http://shop.al-ko.co.uk/products/security-device--aks-1300-.html depending on which stabiliser you have fitted of course - I ALWAYS lock mine onto the car when I am towing, it's double security - against theft when stopped, and against it ever coming off.

At home I have it locked to a 'towball on post' set in concrete, plus wheel clamp, plus chain through chassis and another ring set in concrete, plus alarm, plus in sight of the house, plus out of sight of the road, plus the dog who will lick you to death!!

Where do you live then??? - Crewe was never a den of thieves rogues and vagabonds!! :D

But the hitch is firmly attached to the ball with the lock in situ - normally use a 75mm staple Abus lock!

I take you poit when loose so to speak - a simple solution to this problem would be a £10 ball lock inserted in the hitch then the lock thro thr Alko bit. - this would not however stop anyone with a dry b*llick lift on the back of a lorry nicking it - how far security wise do you go??

A couple og caveats before commenting:

I do not own a camper type trailer.

I do own a twin axle, very nice 3/4 ton utility trailer. It originally cost around £1200. I have had it for 9 years.

My trailer sits next to the house, directly by the streeet, so you can just back up to it and drive away.

It has never been locked, but often has a load of rubbish on it, waiting to go to the re-cycle/dump.

The only "incident" was one New Years morning. Some young lads on foot were pulling the trailer away and down the street. The neighbour lady across the street was making coffee in her kitchen facing the street. She opened the window and yelled at the boys - scared the bejesus out of them, so they returned it and apologized from a distance.

Gotta add that she was not clothed at the time, and a big girl, E og F cup and well over 90 kg and tall.

I figure that with no theft insurance and lock, what I have saved over the years will pay for the current value of the trailer.

No insurance either, no probs here in western France only probs when in UK, got back to my car c/w trailer sometime ago and a couple of guys were eyeing up the trailer, they got into a car with tow hitch and drove off rapidly, hence my caution!
