ECU's and Remaps

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Quick thing... If you have an ECU for one car and got another ECU from the exact same car would it work or would it have issues

and if you got and ECU that had been modded and placed it into a car that was still standard, would it just take?

And what program would tell you that the ECU has been modded. For example, if an insurer was to scan your car, how would they know it was mapped?

Regards,

Damian.

ECU's can be swapped, providing you have the SKC codes and full working copy of VAG-COM/VCDS

So you can buy an ECU which has an uprated map on it, and install it. Providing of course that the engines are comparable

Is that a difficult job/costly job?

Aslo how would you know if it was remapped? How do you tell?

Swapping the ECU is pretty easy - instructions here: ross-tech immobilzer

If you don't have the SKC's ( come printed on a plastic strip normally attached to the spare set of keys ), you can send the ECU to someone like Ben @ Shark Performance ( about £45 iirc )

I think the only way to see if an ECU is mapped, is to actually look at the code inside it, or drive the car

I was under the impres that you cant recode the ECU using VCDS? thoes instructions are to code keys to the ECU not code the ECU to your key so the key works on both ECUs.

I have done this, I have 2 ECUs of witch both are remapped but one is a generic stage 1 which I use most of the time as its 3-6mpg better on fuel at a faster speed and the second is my Custom RSTuning remap thats more powerful but not that good on fuel for the everyday run. I had the other st1 ecu done for the car back in Feb time and cost £60 but was well worth it as Ive saved more than that in fuel by using it.

To get them coded dont they need to be split open? and the chip removed and either read or wiped and copied over again as there is the imob chip and another chip on the ECU that protects the Imobilizer so the only/easiest way round it is to remove the Imobilizer chip?

No, VAG-TACHO ( about £20 including lead ) can apparently read the SKC

That link Iposted up, has links to the generation specific instructions, such as details how to swap eco on gen1 ecu: here

Its' easier than configuring a device driver in Windows 7, thats for sure.

The copied versions of VAG Tacho as available on everybody's favourite auction site generally works on the instrument cluster, they don't work on the ECU as far as I know, but most professional tools work on both.
