First impressions after 5 months... 140PS/4x4/DSG Estate

Featured Replies

I didn't want to write my thoughts about Superb before I don't give him fair shot, in several occasions. Well... there is no time for snow, obviously ;) I covered almost 7000 km, mostly highways in Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia and Greece.

I've order Amethyst Purple, Beige Glamour Leather. I've opted for DSG, 4x4 and 140PS. It's better to say what I don't have, shorter list :)

Things I don't have:

- Navigation (since there are no maps for Balkan countries, Bolero instead)

- Automatic boot door (kinda regret that now)

- Heated windscreen (will see about that on winter)

- Premium sound

- Tinted glass (wasn't satisfied with look, went for custom tint)

- Auto parking (it supposed to come by default, but it turned out it is free only for 170 + DSG, not 140 versions)

First I will start with things I don't like:

1) Seating position - I can't find it for few months, and I think I never wont. I am 185 cm (6ft) tall, nothing unordinary about me. When I setup seating position according to all rules, I find myself too much upright, almost touching roof, which I don't like. I doubt there is more than 2-3 fingers available space. If I get closer and recline back, I am not feeling comfortable with leg space and steering wheel position.

2) Headrest - Can't believe it has only height adjustment. I always find it necessary to tilt it little forward, and most cars I had this had this. I didn't expect active headrest or anything fancy, just a option to adjust it horizontally.

3) Seating base - Too short. Whatever I try with adjustment, I feel it doesn't have enough support. I was hoping to see option for seat base length extension like most cars have in high spec seat/leather configuration.

4) Instrument cluster - There is one annoyance with rev and speed meter and the way how they are set. I've seen many gauge housings tilted downward to offer better visibility on sun. Same is here, except that clear plastic cover doesn't follow design, on contrary it is tilted upward. It is perfect for picking up all dust and glare. And since it tend to be always cleaned, there is already signs of micro scratches which are visible on some sunlight angles.

4) Athermic windshield - Till now, I thought it is just buzzword from catalogs. But after move from Grand Picasso with enormous windshield, I felt all ferocity of sun without it with tiny Superb windshield. I have tinted all windows, dark from B pillar, lighter in front but I don't want to touch windscreen. Also there was no option for laminated windows, to lower wind noise.

5) Cruise control - It's not intuitive. I have big MFD, and I don't have any indication at which speed cruise control is set. Speeding up/down during cruise is impossible as you have to wait to reach speed on speedometer to see where are you. Canceling button is awkward, and I doubt anyone is using it, mostly going for brake to cancel cruise, making life of drivers behind me miserable. Otherwise with cancel, you might turn indicator and again send wrong messages. It's legacy solution form 90's which doesn't deserve to be in this car.

6) MFD/Maxidot display - It is useful, but I felt somehow it is pretty disconnected with all this car can offer. Some beeps and warnings are not visible and registered with MFD. There are some things that you can setup by not using MFD, but with MFD it would be more intuitive and easier. I know that his car can be ordered without MFD and that there has to be way to operate it without it, but I think it is mistake offering it without MFD. That compromise was bad and as result integration with the car is not complete.

7) Bolero radio - Just one minor glitch. When you select folder on SD card which has sub folders, it will start and play all songs trough all sub folders. But when you press "Mix/Shuffle" it will just shuffle and play songs in current folder where current song is playing.

8) High/main beam - Lights are powerful and I do like them. But once you are out of city in the middle of no where in dark, you see huge difference. They are great and superior with dipped/low beam use, but bellow average with high beam. I am not sure what can be done to boost light output, I think there is auxiliary halogen light for flashing, maybe that can be upgraded to add some power to high beam.

9) DRL - It is big fault to offer yellow DRL light on a car this class, when almost all cars comes with LED's. It is first thing to upgrade, I am just waiting to see clear winner for DRL replacement leds, and the same for rest of "white" lights.

10) Air pollutant sensor - I don't understand when it works, what it detects, no any indication except green led that option is turned on.

11) Eyeglasses holder - There is no single piece of glasses that I or my wife have which could fit there. I had to buy some shades just for that purpose.

12) ISOFIX latches - I found they are to deeply installed. I had three seats to test, and I had hard time reaching latches. The worst thing is that Group 3 seats reclining feature depends mostly on distance form latches. And on all seats almost whole length of Isofix arm from seat is extended just to reach ISOFIX latch, making impossible to recline seat further.

13) 140 PS engine - I wish there was option for 170PS. Superb is made for longer journeys, and I mostly use highways where is biggest difference between 170/140ps. Up to 100Km/h there is almost no difference, but starting there you can feel exponential difference growth. You can't do much with 140PS version once past 140km/h. 170ps version is still lively and you can overtake with ease on higher speeds.

14) Wind noise - Superb is having good sound isolation. Although you can hear fair share of diesel engine, it's sound is refined and give me good feedback where I am with my foot. However there is significant wind noise after 120km/h. I am not sure is it up to panorama roof, it is tinted but I am not sure is also laminated glass which should improve sound insulation.

15) Panorama/mirrors - There is small thing which irritates me, in order to fold down mirrors by remote you have to press longer lock key. That function always close panorama roof as well :(

16) Upholstery/carpets - It doesn't deserve comment. It is under level of Chinese Cherry and similar. Even original luxury floor mats doesn't look much better, but they are must.

That was all things I don't like. There won't be long list of things I like, because there is no sense listing all details. I would just state few things where I am exceptionally pleased.

1) Drive comfort - This car perfectly suites my taste. I have 17" Trifid alloys, as I was shooting for comfort ride and bad roads. Driving Grand Picasso, I was desperate for something with harder springs, which gives more feedback. And having sporty A4 on 18" before I wasn't thrilled with idea to feel when I drive over coin. Superb is just right mix, and first car where I am satisfied with ride comfort.

2) Power - Although I still would like 170 PS version, 140PS, 4x4 and DSG is ideal combination. I am not sure how much 4x4 contributed to this as I didn't tow or drive in though conditions. Power distribution is almost linear. DSG has its quirks but it is all up to the driver to adapt style of driving. During longer trips, I usually drive car fully loaded (2 adults, 2 kids, full boot, biggest Thule) and you have to be really picky to find difference when it is empty. My friend is doing chip tuning, and I can get it for free, but as I am always whining about 170PS version 140PS is good enough to keep it untouched.

3) Handling - This supposed to be in things I don't like. Handling and steering is very direct, precise with excellent response. I've used to like that, but after driving Grand Picasso, I start to like idea of such indirect steering. Fact is that I've used to turn back a lot during drive, to check kids, talk to them etc. In Picasso all those action with it's indirect steering was no problem at all. You could hold steering wheel however you liked, move it a little and nothing happened. I know it is not best practice, and I realized that when I moved to Superb. Almost got killed when tried to turn back. Steering is precise, direct and you really have to pay attention what are you doing. So I am changing my habits and vote for this.

4) Paint - Amethyst Purple was first choice among Mocca and White. I was skeptic about lacquer quality as color range was small, with mostly similar colors. I thought it is just one of the VW hierarchy limits. But I was afraid that paint and lacquer quality will suffer. After 6 months, there is no trace of any damages. Usually I see on lower quality paint lot of door scratches, marks etc. But so far nothing. I had one incident in mall garage when guy reversed into my front bumper. It sounded so bad, and after inspecting damage I didn't find anything except one small dot. In similar occasions I usually had at least marks which could be polished.

5) Interior quality - It's excellent. It doesn't have that luxury touch and details like higher class (Merc/BMW) and certainly no any ambitious uniqueness. It is boring, outdated but sturdy and quality finish. Beige was must for me, with black carpets. It looks and feels great, and I am more than satisfied.

6) Boot - I miss electric door boot. You know feeling with both hand full and open booth. Boot is large, well shaped lot of smart storage space around wheel area. It has good organizing tools, rails, nets etc. Boot cover is well thought. Small torch is something I used to on Picasso. All this is not anything exceptional, but overall I am exceptionally satisfied.

7) Rear seats - It's superb Wow factor. Everything is already told.

8) Panorama roof - After spacious Grand Picasso, with so much glass estate it was must for us to have this. It is great, gives so needed light and overcomes tunnel impression when you look back.

9) Sound - I am not audioholic, but I have decent setup at home. I am indifferent generally toward sound in Superb, it is OK, nothing spectacular but I couldn't say its bad at all. But I just wanted to put in pros list, as there was lot of bad reviews and rattle problems, etc... Not sure if they solved that, or I am deaf but I am happy with it....

Pictures? I'll promise to upload some to this thread... Never had photo session to take a picture of car, but there are some where car can be seen :)

sounds good. might have to consider one myself
