Yea was thinking of the same myself, Amsterdam that is, I'm still in denial whether to keep my Fabia Standard or not haha!

Have you done the trip before?

yeah done it in feb this year, nice little trip to be fair!

bought the vrs from a garage in reading, had to take it back 3 weeks later for them to replace the dmf and clutch (under warranty B) )

they gave me a brand new volvo c30 r design, lovely to be in, crap performance, but i reckoned it was somehting to do with only having 500 miles on the clock when they gave it to me, but returned it 2 weeks later with 2k!!

nothing wrong with a little customisation i say!!

what you got in mind?

Hmm I might be interested in this... I wouldnt mind doing this

What do you want to know? I have organised a couple of Brisky events in the past as well as a few solo tours 4k miles+.

Major thing is to pick your dates carefully, avoid holiday periods cost/ accommodation and traffic all become a bug bear, avoid arriving at a section of road at the same time as a cycle race, Tdf, Giro, etc. Don't underestimate the weather and always have an alternative route especially if traveling before mid June or after mid september.

And one I did with the mx5 http://www.planetmx5.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4984

Costs: out of season (ie not ski, not summer) B&B and meals are excellent value compared to UK budget £50 a day at current exchange and that should get you the odd drinky as well.

Fuel, depends which country you are in, Diesel is a lot cheaper, with the rates as they are petrol is on a par. Buy fuel in the afternoon, best before you park up then you are ready for the next day, and prices do tend to drop in the afternoons. Ironically Switzerland is usually cheapest for fuel but the Franc as strengthened so probably about on a par.

Driving in France and Germany on Autoroute/ Autobahn it is possible to rack up 4 fig mileages in a day, Hit the passes and you want to be down bellow 200 miles (ideally bellow 150) per day.

If you are a small group 4-6 and out of holiday season then (June/ early July or Sept) then you don't need to book accommodation. Larger groups then you will need to be more structured if you want to all stay in the same hotel.

Anything else you need just shout.

The nurburgring is a great place to visit for petrol heads(or diesel heads) and having done this 'little' road trip over 40 times in the last 13 years i can highly recommend it! If your just going to Amsterdam this might not be the longest road trip in the world as it's only an hour from Rotterdam ferry port or 3 hrs from Dunkirk. Have fun!

Make it longer and drive it. Channel Tunnel to calais, calais to Amsterdam via Belgium

sorry to hear that fella. im not looking to go til i'm back from VT in January, if i go boarding at all, so you have a while yet to sort it!

the answer to your question is a bit "how long is a piece of string"! depends on all sorts, like how old it is, what mods you're running, how you drive it etc.

mine is currently on 77k and sounds and feels good to me, had 97k on my Audi A3 with no issues, but what do i know!!

well i am well up for this, as is my buddy and my co-driver, a couple on here have expressed some interest.. anyone else fancy this?!

I'm really up for this, as in I have money waiting if the ball gets rolling.

Little update....

My mate now has his vRS and is well up for this trip.

I might be going snowboarding in January so we wont be looking for this to happen until April but everyone in my party are up for this, so if you fancy tagging along, feel free to pm me and we will take it from there.

Jay

April sounds good and by that time the chance of snow should have passed :)

nice one Nik.

Gonna get xmas out the way before getitng things moving, which will also allow others to see this thread and get involved if they want, so unless people start adding replies, this thread may go quiet for a while, but i will pick it up again come January.

Again, if anyone is SEARIOUSLY interested in this, please pm me for further details

Jay

I did the famous Nurburgring trip in April in my fiesta TDCi with some mates :) Got the ferry from Dover then just poodled down the Luxembourg for the cheep fuel :D then fount one of the best driving roads I have ever been on... I was only in my little fiesta but my god it was fun. Then drove to the ring, checked in to our hotel stayed there for a few days went on the ring few times, then drove up to Amsterdam for few days got drunk... ;) then came back. I think it was a 5 day holiday and one of the best ive been on.

Going back in march/april with some more mates this time and a few more cars and doing the ring for a long weekend

If you ever get the chance, do it. With out question... and make sure you go down into Luxembourg great little country.

sounds awesome, great advice

cheers Rob

My mate Marc will be coming along as a passenger as well. He's a proper PROPER petrolhead and he'll be sharing the driving with me, or lighting my tabs while I'm driving (or vice versa)

How about Dover - Calais and then stopping at Reims Formula One circuit? Always wanted to see that.

Well so far my end there will be me and my co-driver who's on rolling duty only :giggle: plus my mate and his missus in their Fab vRS

yeah agree to go via calais for a good run... awesome idea but one hell of a de-tour! will run it by the others and come back.

I'm up for this still, but, just had a new turbo fitted, after them sending the wrong one first time, had a new EGR valve and Intercooler fitted as well, then the service manager at the skoda garage my dad works for has took it out for a road test today, BOOM, loads of smoke out of the back :(, did you say you're looking at April? if so i hope my cars fixed by then :(

I'm not too bothered as long as it's a decent trip :), and yea, seems every time i get a bloody car something goes seriously wrong with it, dads tempted to try and get me a brand new turbo instead, can't keep getting the technicians to keep putting turbos in for the fun of it!!
