VRS Fuel Economy - Your Solution if its poor !

Featured Replies

Super Unleaded.

I've just put my 4th tank of V Power through the Fabia and the difference is significant. This morning I averaged over 220miles 48.8MPG. Cruise was set at 70 on the motorway sections, and the A and B roads (80 ish miles worth) were in the 60mph region. No crawling/hiding behind lorries either.

Car only has 2200 ish miles on the clock to boot, so probably a bit more to come yet !

Previously doing the same journey on 95 RON fuel, also from Shell, 44 mpg.

I'm not suggesting VPower has given me 4mpg, but its certainly helped a lot.

Fabia2 VRS, 180hp 1.4 TSI is suppose to run on 98 Octane fuel so if you run on 95 Octane you will probably get less power and higher fuel consumption. Such as it was in our Octy1 VRS, SEAT Cupra etc than is suppose to run on 98 Octane.

In the Octavia2 VRS is only needs 95 octane and will even run on 91 Octane so 98 Octane is a waste on money.

We reckoned on getting an extra 5 or 6% mpg with the Mk1 VRS etc so it just about paid for itself going for the 98/99 Octane fuel although it was sometimes several pence a litre more than the 95 Octane.

Using the tipronic/paddles and freewheeling also can give a couple of extra mpg I have found.

if approiate switch of traction control and slide dive over to the left and already am seeing 5 mpg difference on the same route doin the same sorta speed worth a go guys just tae see

cheers

I put V-power diesel in my TT the other day, it was no more economical but went like stink in comparison! Will definitely use in the Monte Carlo when I finally have to fill it up!

Mine is definitely quicker on super and marginally better on fuel. hard to tell really as it's still running in. My journey home from work is crawling through Swansea city centre

slightly off topic but can you do any harm using either at any time, maybe 95 one fill up then 98 etc etc

Super Unleaded.

In a 180bhp twin-charged car? Seriously? We learn something new every day, don't we!

I use V-Power in mine, I did use BP Ultimate for the first 2 tanks but it seems to like V-Power more

Used VPower for the first 2 tanks and Momentum 99 for this one. Doesn't feel that different

The FSI engine is meant to be run on Super Unleaded and early Octavia II VRS Petrols (like my old one) did specify 98RON in the filler door. Later ones say 95 RON. Power ouputs state 197hp on 98 RON and power output will be less on 95RON.

By freewheeling do you mean going into neutral, or letting off the accelerator? Keeping the car in gear will be more economical as the injectors will close when the throttle is closed.

This topic has been done to death many times over - 98 vs 95 "will it explode if I put 95 in?" etc etc :giggle:

YES you do see slightly better fuel economy/performance on super (although not for at least 3-4 tanks after the change to allow the ECU time to adapt, any difference prior is likely to be psychological) and YES the manafacturer does recommend 98 for the vRS but lets be honest you are more likely to get an audience with the pope than end up with engine damage if you stick 95 in....

End Of.

I always use Momentum 99. uses V-power and was getting about 280 miles to the tank? Clearing 300 with Momentum? So naturally I just stuck with the Momentum!

Had my VRS for 3 months now and economy has crept up each tank full up to mid 30s now.

Only ever put v power in so can't comment on what difference it makes although at only around 3 or 4 quid it seems daft to go against what the maker recommends.

Yes you will have used less fuel perhaps going down the hill but you will be going slower at the bottom of the hill if you had freewheeled as the greater internal friction losses in the engine running at 2 or 3 thousand rpm rather than 800 rpm more than makes up for the micro grams of fuel used. Works for me, will not be changing from freewheeling and now there are more cars come on to the market that do this to help fuel consumption, new Audis have it, we will get it in Skoda in a year or two ie E setting on the PRND stick to do this. Only do this in the DSG and not in the manual VRS or Manual Octy1 wiesel.

Always used v-power so car knows no different - unless the dealer put 1/4 tank of 95 in it before I collected it - but it was only 5 mins before I had it topped up with the good stuff :)

Always get around 45mpg on a run and average 36 ish around town.
