Another MPG topic... Potential reasons why mine is low?

Featured Replies

Apologies for another thread on low MPG but I'm getting concerned that I'm not getting the best from my Fabia VRS.

With normal driving, I'm getting 360 to a full tank. The car has FSH and is at 28k.

This is mostly motorway driving. I've got the common rear brake squeak and I remember reading in another thread that this could relate to the poor MPG?

Any ideas would be much appreaciated.

I get about 300-350 miles from a tank mostly town driving. That does sound low for motorway mileage. Have you checked your air filter or had your car plugged into vagcom doing live maf readings?

When was your air filter last changed?

A dodgy MAF can also play havoc with your fuel consumption.

Thanks for the replies

I took my car for a health check and diag reading at JKM and all came back fine.

I haven't checked the air filter, how much is a MAF and how easy is it to replace?

Regards

MAF is about £75-80 I believe? easy to replace just undo 2 clips, unplug it, slide it out and do the reverse for the new one. Takes about 5 minutes tops.

Definitely check for brake drag first before you spend money. Just jack up each wheel and check you can spin them pretty easily. A very small amount of drag is normal though.

360 when the light comes on would be normal IMO (giving a total of around 420 including that left in the tank). My best was 489 with an indicated 20 left.

Definitely check the rear brakes for drag. The brakes shouldn't squeak when rolling. When mine did this it was an indication that the pads were low. "Mooing", squeaking or general "tube train pulling into a station" noises under braking are possibly normal.

Air filter is a good one to check. Normal service schedule replaces it at 40K. I like to have mine done every 10K.

Also check out the "cage mod". Basically involves unplugging the electrical connection to the MAF and refitting it with the addition of "silicone dielectric grease". Whether it's the grease or the breaking/making of the connection that does it, I don't know. Some swear it makes a difference.

This, alot of people in the states rave about this.

New tyres will also reduce your mpg for a good few weeks

As has been mentioned, get the car off the ground and check that all the wheels can be turned freely with the brake off (to check they're not sticking). Also worth checking/replacing the air filter (Skoda say 40k, I do mine yearly). Over/under-inflated tyres can also make a difference, so worth checking them too.

Obviously depends on how heavy your right foot is, but what you've said amounts to 43mpg ((45l -7l) / 4.55 = 8.35g; 360m / 8.35g = 43), which feels low - worse than my relatives get in their 2.0TDi Octavia estate going to-and-from work (max of 40mph) ...

Appreciate all the suggestions.

I'll try all of the above and see where It gets me. I sold my Clio 182 to buy the VRS and I used to get 330 out of that!

I had a 182 and can verify that! was very easy to get 330-360 to a tank in it and it was a 50l tank.

That's a 50 litre apple you're comparing to our 45 litre apples then? :)

Do you fill the expansion tank too? This makes a massive difference imo. Ok it means and extra £10-15 goes in but it keeps me away from the petrol station for a few more days and leaves me with 2wk refills.

I fill up when the fuel light comes on, and make use of the expansion tank trick. I usually fit about 48L in, and manage 450-480 miles out of a tank - 40 to 45 mpig so says http://www.torquecar...calculator.php. I only have a ~15 mile commute to work though, of which only about 2 miles is dual carriageway.

In my case I have changed the MAF and always change air filter at 10k, or even before. I've just put it down to a combination of the re-map / bigger turbo and short journey

Just thought I'd update the thread as I see a ton of these that never seem to have people update to see if the problems is fixed.

So on my last run I got 360 to the tank and that was litterally from brim to brim with 75% motorway driving and 95% of it driving like a granny.

Ok so I've replaced the Air Filter and put in another full tank. I also jacked the car up and yes there is drag from the drivers side rear brakes, I can hear it rubbing against the brake. It's not really bad drag but it's obviously there. So I'm going to purchase:

Fabia vRS Rear Brake Anti Squeal Kit

6X0 698 998

and see where that gets me.

If I do all this and still no better, I'll look at replacing the MAF.

I've found the part number for this - Bosch 0281002461 seems to be about £100 which is dear so I'm hoping it's not the issue.

I'll report back soon.

lol that's not very good is it! I get that mileage on town stuff in my new vRS

My old car used to get almost 400 all the time, new owner seems to get 500-600 each time as he does longer journeys.

Ok just to update, I fitted the antisqueal kit and there was no improvement to the mpg, nor did it even stop the squealing brakes!!

I jacked the car up and the drag on the drivers side is really really bad, so I think the caliper may be rubbing.

I've booked the car in to JKM next month so I'm going to get them to look at it!

I really hope it gets fixed as I keep reading threads about people getting between 450 - 600 to a tank, without even filling the expansion.

I'll report back after it's been in JKM.

people who say they get 600 to a tank without filling the expansion are more than likely lying.

+1 on ^

I get about 350 to a tank without the expansion my travel each day is about 3 - 4 miles of town driving and my car is remapped I am happy with the 36 mpg as something equally as fast in a petrol would be alot less IMO

The best I've achieved on 2 occasions are,

579miles to 3/4 tank,

And, Edinburgh-Prestonpans-Irlam (3 runs on RR)-Driffield-Gateshead,

Fuel light just came on and refuelled, Not hanging about on either!

I've done a ventectomy so using the expansion tank!

580miles to a full tank using expansion tank £74 to fill . most I have had from a full tank was 650miles gf doing a lot of the driven that month .

Ok promised updates so this is what has happened and what I've tried:

- Anti Squeal brake kit - no mpg change

- Sharran Springs incase of handbrake binding - no mpg change

- Upgraded 312mm brakes at the front incase of binding pistons - no mpg change

Now I finally booked it into JKM to get it diagnosed. They came back with(not word for word and from memory) something along the lines of "Plugged laptop in on roadtest, MAF was showing higher levels of airflow. The reason MAF is showing high airflow is due to turbo veins sticking and needing more fuel to push through. The situation will get worse, the car will start in 'limp' mode some days and it will need the car to be turned off and on again and engine management light will show. The only fix is £1100 for a new turbo and fitting. The reason this could have happened because the car has only been driven on short journeys in its life and these turbos are not made for these sorts of journeys."

Obviously hearing this, I was devestated! I bought the car on 25,000 and it's showed low mpg from this time. It's now only on 33,000 and I'd specifically spent more money on getting a low mileage one to avoid any problems.

I did some thinking of what to do next on a miserable drive home and thought about trying to get turbos cheaper, getting a local mechanic to fit or even upgrading to a better turbo etc etc.

The only thing I hadn't tried was the MAF. I thought I had nothing left to lose, so I nipped down to eurocarparts. £116.40 for a reconditioned MAF and 25% briskoda discount put it at £91, and then the return of the old MAF gave £36 off again.

Got it home, changed the MAF over... drove it back to ECP to exhance the old one and........ M'way mpg was showing 65mpg!!!! I was only getting 40 mpg max before the MAF change. Did a little burst around town after, 45-50mpg!! originally was 36-38mpg!!!!!

**Touch wood** at the moment as I've just put in a full tank and will see if I get more than the 360miles I was getting before the MAF change.

I'm not having a go at JKM because I do find their service top notch, and the sticking veins may still be an issue but I've seen no loss in power from the turbo whatsoever and my main issue was the MPG. The new MAF appears to have fixed that. I will update again when I've gone through this tank.
